Melbourne Co-housing Project Mini-Conference

2003-07-09 Thread Chris Raab
Thinking Dreaming Making
Co-housing
Not Melrose Place

Co-housing is a way of living in community that creates more
possibilities for sharing some aspects of daily life. It offers
individuals and families opportunities to have their own, intimate
spaces at the same time as having the support, company and care of
others. It offers ways of living more sustainably and with greater
respect for this earth.

Co-housing is a reaction to the sterile, individualised, resource
intensive lifestyles advocated by banks, property developers and
retailers. More importantly though, co-housing is a pro-active approach
to loss of community, busy-ness and debt.

We are hoping to create a collectively owned co-housing community in
Melbourne, preferably within biking distance of the inner suburbs. We
are seeking more people to become involved in making these dreams a
reality within five years. If co-housing sounds like your cup of tea and
you have a commitment to community, environmental and social justice,
valuing diversity, then Not Melrose Place might be for you! Come along
to find out more ...

Sunday 27 July, 11am to 3pm

recycling systems, energy conservation and use of renewable energy

Stable, long-term housing with collective rather than private ownership

An active community life including communal meals

LL:INFO: Another death due to mandatory detention regime

2003-02-18 Thread Chris Raab
I have forwarded this with permission from the author.

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi All,
We'll the renewed faith in humanity was short lived,
recently we heard about the ninth person to died in custody. Her name
was Fatima and she had a husband and three children. The fact that she
died at the hands of our Government's neglect was enough to make us all
sick, but now we have learnt that her husband, Ali and their three
children are somewhere in the world (no-one knows) on the journey back
to war-torn Afghanistan. Ruddock said he would ship her body off with
the family, like she is some piece of garbage. Well now we know he was
kidding. The family have been rushed out of sight and out of mind.
Without any due process to inquiry or compassion for the family Ruddock
has forced their return to Afghanistan. People, it's not getting better,
nor is it getting even reasonable. The callousness of our Government
continues unabated and this barbaric behaviour continues silently in the
corridors of the minister's office, the scheming, the plotting still
continues to display new lows in human decency. Our journey to Baxter is
needed more than ever, while the innocent asylum seekers are neglected
and allowed to die without any dignity we must continue. The repugnant
policies of our government must be condemned, damn and finally removed.

Let's rally support for the refugees in concentration camps, let's
condemn Ruddock and the Howard government as the murdering bastards they
are. Let's go to Baxter be heard internationally and do all in our power
to stop this commercial human trading in death.

Matt Hamon

LL:AA: noone is illegal call to action - Baxter

2003-02-06 Thread Chris Raab

If you have come here to help me, you are wasting your time. But if
you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us
work together.
Lilla Watson

National borders shifted to restrict immigration. Offshore processing
and detention. Forced deportations. No new recorded arrivals in over a
year. The gradual phasing out of current onshore detention centres, and
the relocation of those who have spent months and years in imprisonment.

Australia is not alone in fortifying its borders. All over the world
governments erect walls of concrete and razor wire, install high tech
security equipment and employ computerised surveillance systems to
protect their power and privilege from those seeking a better life. In
an increasingly globalised world Capital moves freely, but not people.

A new state-of-the-art militarised centre at Baxter. In order to reverse
the negative community perception of mandatory detention, gone is the
razor wire. But the barriers still remain.

An electric fence secures the border.

Solid fences within the camp are erected not for containment but to
increase isolation. From the inside all that can be seen is the sky.
Separate compounds divide friends and family.

The invisibility of those inside is made possible by locating the
detention facility in the desert. Information barriers are strictly
policed by the state and the private corporation that profits from
incarceration. Letting the imprisonment of those inside go unchallenged
will only strengthen the forces that control the lives of people on both
sides of the fence.

Having risked their lives in coming here seeking freedom, many people
inside the camps risk further imprisonment, deportation and even death
in challenging their detention. They join thousands of people
world-wide who riot, self harm, light fires and destroy compounds in
protest against and in defiance of their incarceration.

As the people inside escalate their struggle, so shall our struggle
escalate in solidarity. For we are part of a global movement fighting
for the right of all people to move and to stay.

This Easter we will converge at Baxter. We will take action in
solidarity with our brothers and sisters inside the camps. Through civil
disobedience we will make contact and challenge the barriers that divide
us. Join us.

Ours will be part of many actions that are planned for the Baxter
protest from April 18 - 20. Direct actions, media, radio, vigils,
workshops, music. For more information www.baxter2003.baxterwatch.net

no one is illegal presents

: Holiday Camp : a documentary about Woomera 2002
The pivotal action of this documentary is the detention centre breakout,
which occurred as part of a five day long direct action camp established
next to the razor wire fences.

Holiday Camp reclaims the voices of the marginalised, and connects the
issues of Indigenous dispossession, genocide, constructions of race and
incarceration policies, which are often portrayed as unrelated. The film
suggests that the policy of mandatory detention and raising of borders
to protect fortresses of privilege make us all un-free.

Holiday Camp has screened in Sydney, Adelaide and Newcastle, and was
screened at European border camps in Strasbourg France, Jena (Germany),
and the second European PGA conference in Leiden (Netherlands).

Holiday Camp was produced by drive-by shooting/tallstoreez productionz,
a three person Australian/German film collective based in Adelaide and
Hamburg.

:Panel Discussion: A dialogue about resisting the border protection
regime in Australia and internationally

How is your liberation bound up with mine? How will we work together?
Where do we meet?

The directors of the film, Jennifer and Kuddell, will be at the
screening to talk about Holiday Camp.

Kuddell will share his experiences at recent international actions
against border protection policies in fortress Europe held in Strasbourg
and Jena border camps. Strasbourg was a European wide mobilisation of
border activists. Jena was largely initiated by self-managed asylum
seeker organizations based in Germany.

Jess will report back from her recent trip to Baxter and Woomera
detention centres, and relate messages from current detainees.

LL:DDV: Carlton-Fitzroy-Inner peace group

2002-10-31 Thread Chris Raab
(*sorry for shamelessly plagiarising your email David*)

There will be a meeting next Wednesday November 6 7pm to form a local
peace group in the Carlton and Fitzroy areas.

The meeting will take place at 7pm at Genevieve's cafe in Carlton, (233
Faraday St Carlton, near the old Carlton Cinema)

The Victorian Peace Network has called for residents to set up local
groups. Some Fitzroy/Carlton/Inner City residents attended the VPN
teach-in on how to set up local groups and decided to make a start.
Everyone opposed to the war on Iraq and in tune with the VPN ethos is
welcome. (See www.vicpeace.org)

Draft agenda items:

1. Planning for the major peace rally on 1/12. Possible strategies:
leaflet distribution, stories for local papers / radio, other ideas,
video screening, stalls etc.

The aim is to publicise the rally locally and also establish
neighbourhood peace action groups.

please drop me a line if you have questions/apologies/would like your
name and contact details included in the local group phone list
