ROD QUANTOCK presents
BAGHDAD NIGHTS

Fresh from another sold-out Comedy Festival show, The Axis of Stupidity,
Australia's answer to Rod Quantock returns to Trades Hall for the
seventh of his annual State of the Nation addresses, Baghdad Nights.
This is quintessential Quantock. It's a rambling, shambling, hilarious
look at . . . well, everything that's wrong with your world.

If you find commercial current affairs too superficial and the ABC too
cerebral then Quantock's blend of fact and funny is just what you need.
Quantock works backwards from the blood and bombs of day-to-day life in
Bush's Iraq, unravelling the threads of deceit and conceit, conspiracy
and complicity, lies and lunacy that pass for politics today.

CHILE 1973 - THE OTHER SEPTEMBER 11
A Chilean Cultural Evening and Pena
-
Following September 11th, 2001, much of the world has been involved in
the war on terror. The September 11th, 1973 military coup in Chile
(and the complicity of the US State Department, the Central Intellegence
Agency and US multinationals) has been conveniently forgotten. The coup
d'etat resulted in over 10 000 people (men, women and children) being
assassinated.

This year, Australia's Chilean community, many of whom were forced into
exile during the decades of terror, together with Australians who have
worked in solidarity since the coup d'etat, will remember the 30th
anniversary of the coup. A commemorative cultural eveing is being held
at Trades Hall including music, exhibitions, films, dance, and Chilean food.

TAO TE CHING
(The Way and its Virtue)

31. Maintaining Peace
Weapons of war are instruments of fear,
and are abhorred by those who follow the Tao.
The leader who follows the natural way
does not abide them.

The warrior king leans to his right,
from whence there comes his generals' advice,
but the peaceful king looks to his left,
where sits his counsellor of peace.
When he looks to his left, it is a time of peace,
and when to the right, a time for sorrow.

Weapons of war are instruments of fear,
and are not favoured by the wise,
who use them only when there is no choice,
for peace and stillness are dear to their hearts,
and victory causes them no rejoicing.

To rejoice in

THE ISHMAEL CLUB

The Ishmael Club is a new play about Melbourne Bohemians in the early
1900's. It is the story of the intense friendship between artists Will
Dyson, Norman Lindsay and Ruby Lind. These artists gather at Mrs

night at bay. The cafe is home to the Ishmael Club - the outsiders club.

Melbourne has long exhibited an argumentative spirit, a tradition of

MR PUNTILA HIS MAN MAN MATTI
---
Final performances - season must end July 26th

A night of Brecht that is bound to bring a smile to your face. This
cleverly crafted comedy plays with gentry and peasant alike. Brecht uses
humour, music and a dash of cynicism to explore the irreconcilable
differences between classes.

Mr Puntila owns a sawmill, a Studebaker, a forest and 90 cows. If only
he wasn't afflicted by senseless bouts of sobriety. He deviates
between being a nasty, inhumane capitalist pig who mistreats his workers
when he is sober, to a reformed human being when he is drunk.

It is his chauffeur Matti who bears the brunt of Puntila's sober and
drunken outbursts and who must decide in the end whether to continue to
be compromised by the Dr Jeckle and Mr Hyde performance of Puntila.

Overland 171 Lecture Launch
MARGARET SIMONS presents
MYTH, EVIDENCE CULTURE WARS

Simons talks about Australia's 'culture warriors' and their recent
claims against ideological bias and calls for scholarly 'evidence'.
Taking on media heavyweights including Piers Ackerman, Ron Brunton and
Christopher Pearson, she talks about the media fallout from her
explosive book, The Meeting of the Waters, which documents what has come
to be known as the 'Hindmarsh Island Bridge Affair'.

Ron Brunton, Piers Ackerman and Christopher Pearson, says Simons, were
key players in the Hindmarsh Island Bridge Affair. Simons explains how
their actions, along with evidence buried and withheld from the Royal
Commission, led to a dramatic miscarriage of justice. In both
Aboriginal culture and in our own, information follows the lines of
power, and secrets are the inevitable accompaniment to power.

Overland 171 - 'OLD WOUNDS' - focuses on the contemporary 'culture wars'
of black and white Australia, and includes also Jeff Sparrow on the
media's part in the 'war on terror', Claire Tuke's dramatic account of
life at Melbourne University's Ormond College, Michael Wilding on the
Sydney 'push', fiction, poetry, reviews and opinion.

HUMPHREY McQUEEN - MAKING CAPITAL TICK
---
Renowned historian and social critic Humphrey McQueen examines the
'ratcheting up' of the pace of life within modern society.

His lecture, 'Making Capital Tick', follows on from his ground-breaking
and very successful study of Coca-Cola, an archetypal corporation of
contemporary capitalism. McQueen moves into a consideration of the
demand for longer and more intense working hours facing most people
today. He mounts the provocative argument that this intensification of
labour is an inevitable and necessary feature of a society in which
different 'capitals' must compete against each other in order to
survive.

Intriguing personal and cultural implications follow from this analysis.

DICK GAUGHAN - The Bard of Edinburgh
plays Trades Hall for One Night Only!!!

Gaughan is one of the world's most admired guitarists and songwriters
and is a troubadour for Freedom, Hope and Glory. He continues the grand
folk tradition of rallying against injustice and the suppression of the
will hopes of downtrodden peoples worldwide. Dick Gaughan turns a
clear eye on history and on present-day human struggles, as he calls for
a true rising of the poor and disenfranchised.

Working mainly in the areas now known as Folk or Celtic music he has
recorded extensively, and has worked as a session musician in a wide
variety of musical styles. His songs have been recorded by, among
others, Billy Bragg, Mary Black and Capercaillie. Gaughan's greatest
musical love is for the ancient traditional Scots ballads. Also known as
The Muckle Sangs (the big songs), these are the big story songs which
form a substantial part of Scotland's living wealth of traditional song.

Seek out Gaughan's blast furnace performances to hear how music from
the gut really sounds . . . He takes 'folk' and shakes it until it
rattles, making songs from 1707 as relevant as today's rap rants..- The

TELEK (Papua New Guinea) and
BLACK PARADISE (West Papua) with
Glen Lox, Phil Wales David Bridie
-
George Mamua Telek, or TELEK as he is known to his legion of fans in
Papua New Guinea, has long been at the forefront of the PNG music scene.
Telek comes from the village of Raluana, near Rabaul in the Papua New
Guinean island province of East New Britain Telek's songs and his
hauntingly beautiful voice, traverse many musical styles perfectly
capturing the spirit of the proud cultural heritage of the Tolai people
of Papua New Guinea.

Telek performs in Melbourne with bass player Glen Low, from Rabaul who
plays with the famous PNG band BARIKE, and long time Australian
collaborator David Bridie (Not Drowning, Waving My Friend the
Chocolate Cake).

This is also the final appearance of BLACK PARADISE - the hit of The
Morning Star Concert For West Papua - before they return to their
troubled home of West Papua. If you haven't been able to catch this
unique band yet this is one of your final chances!

Black Paradiseís lyrics paint pictures of liberation. In fact, all the
members of Black Paradise work for the amnesty international-type
organisation Elsham (Institute for the Study and Advocacy of Human
Rights) who investigate human rights in the troubled territory and
educate the rest of the world about the beauty of West Papuan culture.
Like East Timor, the West Papuan story is one whose time has come.

owners, moving from acoustic folk/rock to electric and touches of reggae
and country. One of McIntosh's strengths is the meshing of imagery, be
it allegorical or as raw and rich as the red earth of the outback. It
gives his music an originality, that in Australia, is something to
savour.

A CRACKER EVENING WITH JIMMY McGOVERN
presented by the Australian Writers Guild

Lovers of British drama and fans of television's Cracker, this is your
chance to get up close and personal with screenwriter Jimmy McGovern.
McGovern is something of an icon and hero in his hometown of Liverpool.
He enjoys a reputation as a warm and gregarious individual. McGovern's
success as a writer for stage and screen reads an impressive list of
credits, including the award winning Cracker series staring Robbie
Coltrane, the haunting British drama The Lakes and feature films
including the controversial Priest and heart breaking Liam.

Jimmy McGovern has generously agreed to this one off, unique event where
he will enjoy a live interview with guild member Stella Kinsella and
share clips and stories from his screen repertoire. This is a rare and
valuable opportunity for writers and lovers of screen drama to
participate in what promises to be an evening of insight and laughter.
Come chew the fat with McGovern and enjoy some wine, music and a good
old yarn from one of Britain's best practitioners.

This is the first of a series of special Guild the Lily cabaret/panel

WHITE SETTLEMENT IN AUSTRALIA
Violent Conquest or Benign Colonisation?
Keith Windschuttle debates Pat Grimshaw

In his recent book The Fabrication of Aboriginal History, Keith
Windschuttle charges academic historians with a series of wilful
misrepresentations intended to portray Australia as a society marked by
atrocities against Aboriginies. In this important debate, Keith
Windschuttle and Pat Grimshaw outline competing accounts of white
settlement, and explain what is at stake in the dispute.

In addition to The Fabrication of Aboriginal History (2002), Keith
Windschuttle is the author of six other books on contemporary social
issues, including The Killing of History: How Literary Critics and
Social Theorists Are Murdering Our Past (2000). He is also publisher and
a frequent contributor to The New Criterion and Quadrant.

Pat Grimshaw holds the Max Crawford Chair of History at the University
of Melbourne. She is the author of Women's Suffrage in New Zealand
(revised edition 1987) and co-author of Creating a Nation (1994). A
co-authored comparative study of the place of indigenous peoples in the
political structures of British settler colonies is currently in press.

PAINTINGS AND WORKS ON PAPER
by Gary Parkinson
-
A rationale for an ancient art form. Paintings and other traditional art
forms like printing, drawing, sculpture and the like have a physical
presence and immediacy that no other art form can hope to achieve. The
intention of the artist can be seen and is laid bare. Traditional
painting has the power to transcend
cultural barriers that no other art form can. If it is a good art work
the painting will communicate directly with the viewer in a way that is
unique and personal.

THE WALL
presented by Janine J. Cowie Management
---
A young woman books into room number eleven in a decrepit hotel room in
the hope of finding her father. Her only clue is that her mother stayed
in this room 26 years ago, and that night saved her life. By sheer
coincidence, Phil and his brother Peter have booked into the same room.
Phil also stayed in room number eleven 26 years ago, and that night
saved his life.

What unfolds is a story of people being thrown together by coincidence,
and by learning the truth about their lives, they learn to trust in
their own destiny. The Wall explores the relationship between
coincidence and destiny spanning three time frames, (1976, 2002, 2012).
The Wall is a comedy/drama written by Melbourne actor and writer Kirsty
White, and runs for 60 minutes.

AUSTRALIA'S PACIFIC SOLUTION
Film screening
--
THE DOCUMENTARY PRODUCED FOR 4 CORNERS THAT THE ABC REFUSED TO SCREEN!!

Australia's Pacific Solution is a documentary about the Nauru
Detention Camps and will be followed by a presentation by the
film-maker, Kate Durham.

In June 2002, Kate Durham assisted the BBC documentary maker Sarah
MacDonald to portray the Pacific Solution for a world audience, and for
the ABC's Four Corners program. The ABC declined to show the
documentary, in spite of great reviews and the strong public reaction
when it was broadcast on British and European networks at the end of
September.

The program reveals the squalor of the Nauru detention camps, as well as
the brutality - and even torture - perpetrated by our defence forces on
shipwrecked asylum seekers. It introduces the opposition party of Nauru,
and survivors who lost family members at sea. It also speaks of Kate's
arrest and assault by the manager of the camps in Nauru.

A recent showing at RMIT sold out. Don't miss this special repeat
screening at Trades Hall.

IN THE BEGINNING . . . THE ODD TESTAMENT
presented by Short Attention Span

In the Beginning . . . The Odd Testament is a highly entertaining and
very funny three person physical theatre/ cabaret.

Inspired by some stories from the Old Testament, it is the compelling
story of two tragic-comic characters; homeless, isolated, displaced and
impoverished, living in an indeterminate time and place. The work is a
unique combination of theatrical styles from Brechtian songs to bouffon
clowning telling the story of these two imperfect souls and their
'biblical' journey, coupled with the perfection of some of the greatest
literature ever set down.

From the creators of the incredibly popular Hamlet in One Hour, (winner

THE DIVINE LOTUS - FILM SCREENING
presented by the Buoyancy Foundation
---
The lotus flower is an important symbol in the Buddhist religion, which
signifies purity as well as birth, beauty and transcendence. Though its
roots are anchored in muddy waters, this beautiful still flower blooms
and thrives. For us, it embodies the growth and strength of many young
Vietnamese women who are undergoing resettlement and reintegration into
their new life and culture as Australians.

The Divine Lotus, is a 26-min documentary based on the life of Linh:
a young Vietnamese woman and her journey through the drug culture over
the past 7 years. This provides Linh with a platform to express her
insights into how her commitment to heroin has affected her life and
that of others without sensationalism and manipulation. Moreover, it
puts Linh into context as a member of our community- she is someoneís
daughter, mother and sister - someone who still has the possibility to
bloom as a person rather than as a refuse of society.

VALE ABRAHAM AMATERSTEIN

It is with much sorrow that we report that that Abe - one of the New
International Bookshop's keenest supporters - is no longer with us. He
died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday morning (3/11/2002).

Abe became a Communist in fascist Poland in the 1930s. He escaped to the
Soviet Union but lost most of his immediate family to the Nazis. During
World War II, he served as a war correspondent and was wounded in the
defence of Stalingrad. He emigrated to Australia, where he joined the
Communist Party of Australia, and remained a committed socialist to the
end of his life.

In the last couple of years, Abe spent as much time as he could in and
around the shop. All of us here came to greatly appreciate him,

FEVER - presented by Melbourne Workers Theatre
-
Where does the FEVER of the nation burn hottest?

FEVER aims to uncover aspects of our society that are complex, difficult
and painful to comprehend. It is vital that we count the cost of current
behaviour, explore the darker nature of our past and call to account
those who are responsible. FEVER pushes beyond the boundaries of
realism, staking out its territory in another direction entirely; one
that uses allegory, epic theatre, surrealism and music-theatre to

FEVER - presented by Melbourne Workers Theatre
-
Where does the FEVER of the nation burn hottest?

FEVER reunites the team that created the multi award-winning Whoís
Afraid of the Working Class? ? writers Andrew Bovell, Patricia
Cornelius, Melissa Reeves and Christos Tsiolkas, composer Irine Vela and
director Julian Meyrick. Produced by Melbourne Workers Theatre in 1998,
Whoís Afraid of the Working Class? toured nationally the following year
and won numerous awards, including the Gold Awgie, the Jill Blewitt
Award, a Victorian Green Room Award and the Queensland Premierís
Literary Award.

FEVER is about the way humanity consumes that which nutures it. Set
against a landscape marked by a sense of turmoil and deprivation, the
connecting image in FEVER's 4 plays is the river as a line of
demarcation that separates people; as a body of water that must be
crossed to reach the promise of the other side; as a means of escape
from turmoil and delivery to what is unknown. It is a stinking rotten
sewer poisoning all who take from it and the source of renewal

greatest theatrical innovators and the pioneer of Biomechanics. It

short farces by Anton Chekhov.
The production follows his struggles with the Soviet authorities, the
closure of his theatre and ends with his trial, torture and execution by

FEMALE PARTS presented by Difficult Women Theatre Company
-

Must end this Sunday . . .
Welcome to a funny night at the theatre . . . Female Parts is a
production which draws attention to female oppression but is, at the
same time, shamelessly entertaining. Drawing on the traditions of
Brecht, Burlesque, Performance art and Day-time television, Female Parts
promises to take audiences on an exciting and wicked adventure into
hyper domesticity. Female Parts shines a comic light onto the reality of
working women and mothersí lives. It explores the daily domestic chaos
of a woman preparing herself for work and her baby for childcare, the
dilemmas of a middle class house-wife who is trapped and abused, and the
struggles of an articulate, upwardly mobile newly pregnant intellectual
woman.

WAKING UP: daily domestic chaos winds itself into the beginning of a
revolution.
THE SAME OLD STORY: a late in the day, left wing, intellectual pregnancy
becomes a twisted fairy-tale.
A WOMAN ALONE: trapped cabin fever housewife armed with an iron attempts
to wrest control of her oppressive environment.

THIS IS FEMINIST FARCE! Fast, funny, smart and sexy. They may be chained
to the kitchen sink, but beware! The drawers are full of sharp things!

OVERLAND CONFERENCE: RULING CLASS RULING CULTURE: 25 YEARS ON . . .
Who is in control?
Marking the twenty-fifth anniversary of RW Connell's ground breaking
book, Ruling Class Ruling Culture, 30 writers and intellectuals from
Australia and around the globe will converge to partake in a three-day
conference of the same name. Hosted by overland, Ruling Class Ruling
Culture will feature a keynote address by Connell, in which he will
update his study to look at the operation of the Australian ruling class
in the last quarter of a century.
At a time when classic models of class analysis have become fashionable,
Ruling Class Ruling Culture will take a fresh look at cultural, economic
and political agents of power and their relevance in understanding class
dynamics today.
The facts of massive and rapidly worsening income inequality in
Australia are clear and startling. An increasing number of people are
feeling insecure and pressured in their work and life. Rarely
considered, though, is the prospect that those at the top of society may
be involved in the perpetration of this state of affairs.
Overland's robust voice, based on the ethos of fraternity and social
justice, is eminently valuable to our culture and community - Tom
Keneally, Booker Prize winner (1982)

environmental, political and social justice issues. Media without the

Rather than just playing a thirty-second clip of a rally as other news
services do - half of which contains opinion from the journalist and the
other half a summary from the cops - access news talks to community
activists and tries to capture the mood and the intention of a
demonstration - the act of broadcasting itself becomes an act of
protest said access news's Nitennis Davies.

NUTS presented by SOUL THEATRE, written by Tom Topor
We will raise awareness about the playís themes of mental illness,
family dysfunction and sexual abuse. Soul Theatre aims to enhance the
voice of the
disadvantaged via this production. Our plan is to entertainingly engage
people to examine their attitudes of judging one another. The lead
character, Claudia
Faith Draper (played by Alicia Liley) is in a proceeding to ascertain
whether she is mentally fit to stand trial on the charge of
manslaughter, first degree.
Ironically, as the court case proceeds, she is the most competent out of
the entire courtroom! The prosecutor believes that she is mentally ill
as Claudia comes from a well-to-do, middle class family yet her
behaviour is unacceptable to the usual expectation.

WILD POLITICS by SUSAN HAWTHORNE LAUNCH presented by Spinifex Press and
the New International Bookshop
Offering an exciting ride into how the world could be, this challenging
book is the one we have been waiting for. For a long time feminists have
been saying we could do life differently, here is a local and global
exploration of what needs to change, what must go, and how together we
can make a new reality.
Synthesising issues that are at the forefront of local and global
politics and social movements of the twenty-first century, Wild Politics
presents a powerful critique of global western culture, challenging many
of its central assumptions and institutions. Susan Hawthorne unpicks the
structures of power and knowledge, law and international trade rules, as
well as probing into the issues that intimately affect us in our daily
lives, such as our perception of land, how food is produced and the
changing shape of work.
Wild Politics concludes with a compelling vision for a world inspire by
biodiversity, and organised around the principal of diversity.

Bloomsday in Melbourne presents
JAMES JOYCE HITS TRADES HALL; their 9th annual celebration of Ulysses
Bloomsday tramps the worn steps of the Trades Hall to follow the
progress of James Joyce's enterprise bargaining case. Listen to what the
workers at Trades Hall and some from the slums of Dublin have to say to
him. This one-day festival will raise many questions in different media:
theatricals, music, mime, seminar papers, and even in the form of a
musical (Ulysses Cantabile, a musical in four movements) in the evening.
It employs a cast of several dozen professional actors, musicians,
theatre directors, as well as a legion of once-a-year readers. The
seminar will feature papers by Ross McMullin (on the first Labor
government anywhere in the world in Australia in 1904, the auspicious

An eye witness report by Kel Dummett including a slide presentation and
5 minute film screening.
Benny Wenda, West Papuan Resistance Leader Secretary-General of Koteka
Tribal Assembly, was arrested last Saturday by Indonesain military
forces. Wenda was taken by force without anyone showing him a Letter of
Order or telling him why he was being arrested. His arrest comes after
Papuan resistance leader, Dortheys Hiyo Eluay was kidnapped and
assassinated last year, allegedly by Indonesian Special Forces
(Kopassus).
Indonesia gained control of West Papua in 1963 from its Dutch
colonisers. An estimated 300,000 Papuans have been killed or disappeared
under Indonesian rule. A struggle for independence from Indonesia and
against multinational mining corporations, has been long and ongoing.

A 3CR Radiothon Benefit Event presented by Union Promotions and

Bread And Roses is a movie about the struggle of invisible office
cleaners to gain dignity and respect at work. Fiery Mexican sisters Maya
and Rosa work as cleaners in a downtown office block. A fated meeting
with Sam, a passionate American activist, leads to a guerilla campaign
against their employers. The fight threatens their livelihood, family
and risks their expulsion from the country.

Bread and Roses is a story about the most marginalized of LA communities
daring to take on their corporate bosses against all odds. Inspired by
the real life Justice for Janitors campaign led by immigrant cleaners,
mostly women, Loach unravels the events centering his tale on the
spirited Latin American community who dare to take on the corporate
powers and find a sense of dignity.

Ken Loach's film continues his catalogue of work that deals with the
lives of working people. His previous films include Riff Raff (1991),
Ladybird Ladybird (1994), Carla's Song (1996) My Name Is Joe (1998).

The show blends the drama of the refugees with scenes of the pollies,
which produces very funny satire.

KEEPER OF THE FAITH - A BIOGRAPHY OF JIM CAIRNS by PAUL STRANGIO
*LAUNCH*
presented by The New International Bookshop Melbourne University Press

Until recently, Jim Cairns was a familiar sight around the markets of
Melbourne, seated at a table stacked with copies of his latest book. It
seems an unlikely occupation for a man who was once the major thinker
and driving force of the Labor Party Left, and who reached the positions
of Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer in Australia's most reformist
government under Gough Whitlam.
But Cairns was never a conventional politician. In this mature and
sophisticated biography, Paul Strangio reveals a consistent thread
running through the apparent contradictions of Cairns' public career, as
well as drawing a compelling picture of the inner man.
Both highly readable and carefully researched, Keeper of the Faith
reassesses the part Cairns played in shaping Australian public life.
Drawing on a rich range of archival and oral sources, this is a masterly
portrait of one of those rare people who never stop in their search for
truth.

RED CLYDESIDE with ALISTAIR HULETT
Singer/songer writer and interpreter of traditional song, ALISTAIR
HULETT returns from Scotland for a very special, once only performance
in support of his new recording RED CLYDESIDE. Based on a workers'
revolt in the city of Glasgow that broke out with the Declaration of War
in 1914. It follows the tale of the workers and their leader, John
Maclean, through a time of great unrest. Eventually the rulers of
Britain sent troops and tanks into Glasgow, in January 1919, to prevent
a full-blown revolution they feared would engulf the entire country.
Hulett has painstakingly researched the background to the story over two
years and the end result is a CD release of nine original songs with
extensive booklet notes, and the extraordinary full concert version of
RED CLYDESIDE. CD's available at the gig. This performance is the one
and only Melbourne performance. AN ABSOLUTE MUST SEE!

session aims to identify common barriers to implementing Best Value and
highlight a number of manageable solutions for authorities to progress
in designing their approaches.
