And if you use only numbers in the User ID field they will always sorted as text. The User ID field is a text field, independed from the contents. The RIN-field is a number field and therefore sorted as numbers. [LegacyUG] Number of digits in RINs
I have all my user IDs linked to my RINs with a prefix letter. However, using this method the numbers don't sort correctly. For example, they sort H1 followed by H10, followed by H100, then etc. I would like to change the number format to read H0001, H0002, etc., but I can't find out how to get the RINs to use that number format. I cannot find anything on the Options/Customise tabs. Can anyone advise me if this is possible, please? Having changed the RINs I can then update the User IDs using L Tools. Elizabeth

I did not get Elizabeth's original post (because it was not in plain/text). But I will think about modifying LTools to pad the RIN/MRIN with leading zeroes when used in a User ID. Legacy may be able to create a condition to sort by the number only portion but the amount of programming for that is not justified overall until all the bugs are corrected and the more important enhancements instituted. -- Gene Y. n2kvs Researching Young, Zies, Harer Cox with Legacy Family Tree http://h1.ripway.com/egptech/ Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp
Re: [LegacyUG] Number of digits in RINs
Sorry for not using plain text - I have just got a gmail address and didn't realise it wasn't using plain text. I trust this message is all right? Now I understand why it sorts like that - but it would be helpful if you could do this. We are expecting more snow tonight (the English Midlands). Can anyone advise me if this is possible, please? Re: [LegacyUG] Number of digits in RINs
I have been following this discussion, but I am confused what you actually want to happen. Are you wanting the program to add the '0's in after the H with the correct quantity, to make all examples to use the same length of characters, example: H1, H05432, H30012?
