Re: [LegacyUG] Set relationships problem

2009-11-11 Thread Wendy Howard

Hi Mary,

Did you reset the relationships after you entered the new people? It
doesn't happen automatically in v7.

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy Howard

I have set my direct line and my relationships starting with myself. All was
working well but I just entered a new branch and after the 'second cousin
once removed,' all relationships are blank. The next person should be my
third cousin. What's wrong?

Re: [LegacyUG] set relationships

2008-09-24 Thread Elsie Saar
When I enter a person, I have a field I call relationship that I
complete when I enter a person. I set this field to show on the Family
view. That way I don't spend time researching people who are not
related; and I can tell at a glance who/how the person is related to
either myself, my husband, or our granddaughter. Don't mean to
complain, but I do miss the v6 method. I have to use the Relationship
Calculator for my husband's and granddaughter's relatives anyway so
now I'll have to use it to do mine. Thanks for the help everyone.

Elsie, you make my point: having to reset relationships or opening
the relationship

calculator every time I add a new related person is very time
consuming. Imagine the program automatically doing that every time
you added a new name.

I do not reset after adding every name, even if in a direct line, just
every now and again when I either need to do it or just want to look
at something. In fact, at the moment I think it's still set to my
sister's husbands family for whom I've been doing some work rather
than mine, which I have been working on for the past 3-4 days.

But, Ron, having to reset relationships or opening the relationship
calculator every time I add a new related person is very time
consuming. I really miss the automatic calculation of relationships,
it was a really neat feature. Seems some features could have had an
option, use either v6 or v7 method, like with Sources.

No, Mary, you haven't misunderstood the question. I too remember V6
setting relationships for new persons, but if it can be done that
way

in V7 I haven't found it.

One reason for this maybe the addition of all the non-direct
relationships (which I seem to remember were requested by users), I
can well imagine that if Legacy had to recalulate every relationship
whenever a new person was added waiting for our next entry would be
like waiting for Christmas.

Thanks, Elsie. Nice to see someone from NY State on the list. I lived in
Kingston for a couple of years when I worked for I.B.M.

Tom, I made an event called Relationship. Then on the Family View, I
clicked to the left of the husband where the field names are and for the
5th one, I set it to Event: Relationship. Hope that helps. Just my crazy
way of doing things.

Elsie,

Where do you find the relationship field and how do you set it to show
on the Family view? I've brought up a few of the Add templates and
don't see a relationship field.

When I enter a person, I have a field I call relationship that I
complete when I enter a person. I set this field to show on the Family
view.

I didn't see an answer to my question: I went to Tools, Set Relationships,

No, Mary, you haven't misunderstood the question. I too remember V6 setting
relationships for new persons, but if it can be done that way in V7 I haven't
found it.

One reason for this maybe the addition of all the non-direct relationships
(which I seem to remember were requested by users), I can well imagine that if
Legacy had to recalulate every relationship whenever a new person was added
waiting for our next entry would be like waiting for Christmas.

Elsie, you make my point: having to reset relationships or opening the
relationship
calculator every time I add a new related person is very time
consuming. Imagine the program automatically doing that every time you added
 a new name.

I do not reset after adding every name, even if in a direct line, just every
now and again when I either need to do it or just want to look at something. In
fact, at the moment I think it's still set to my sister's husbands family for
whom I've been doing some work rather than mine, which I have been working on
for the past 3-4 days.

Re: [LegacyUG] Set Relationships Not Showing

2008-09-17 Thread Elizabeth Richardson
Renee, in my database, the relationships are shown in the Family View just
above the individual's name, not in the box where the Husband/Wife titles
appear. As far as I know, this is where they have always appeared.

I just did the check/repair and everything appears ok, no messages after
wards. Still the relationship is not showing where the husband and wife
titles appear. I finally had to change the 5th field to show the
relationship but this is not acceptable to me. I like that field to show any
2nd spouses. I have over 14,000 people in my database.

I am using Legacy 7 and I am not sure if this is a bug or just me being
stupid. I can't seem to get my relationships to show up in the Family View
where the husband and wife titles are listed. I have run the set
relationships, it takes a long time to run but nothing is appearing
afterward.

I tried to look in the archives and something strange was going on in there.
There are a lot of posts written in a foreign language. I scroll down a
ways and see some in English. When I tried to look at older posting the
page freezes up. I used the link to the archives that comes at the bottom

I wasn't looking in the right place for the relationship title. Then I had
a multi-colored background and it wasn't showing through. Changed the
foreground and background colors and low and behold I can now see the
relationships. Thanks all for your help.

RE: [LegacyUG] Set Relationships for both spouses

2007-07-05 Thread Jack Earnshaw
I think the sure as eggs comment is about right. I get about 10-20 emails
from Genesrunited each day and try to go through them in order. But,
Murphy's law seems to mean that they almost invariably alternate between
being one of my rellies and being one of my wife's rellies.

Being an idle watsit (ie preferring the computer to do slavish repetitive
tasks) it just annoys me having to
- go to the person being enquired about
- go to RIN 1 or RIN 2
- set relationships
- back to previous person

each time the person is in the other half of the tree.

Setting the starting person for set relationships as one of our sons does
work (sort of), but then I don't know on which half of the tree the other
person is on. eg is it my umpteenth cousin or my wife's (and in 2-3 places -
both!)

It's not critical, but I think it could be helpful to show the relationships
to the family rather than one individual. Failing that having a macro
facility might reduce the typing/clicking.

Jack

RE: [LegacyUG] Set Relationships for both spouses

2007-06-22 Thread Jack Earnshaw
Thanks to all who suggested this solution. Seems to be the best (or only)
one at present. Now, if I can remember how to change the releationship from
9th cousin 5 times removed for my son into ??? for me I'll be happy. Except
that the solution doesn't tell me if the connection is to me or my wife, and
with several duplicate surnames I can still get in a muddle. There again I
am usually in a muddle anyway.

I think I will add a suggestions entry to see if anything materialises

Would it be logical/possible to have the set relationships option able to
use a starting family (rather than person) and report two relationships -
left one based on the husband and the right one based on the wife - maybe
using different colours?

e.g.

Great Grandfather / -
- / Grand Aunt
3rd cousin 2 times removed / 6th cousin 5 times removed

- or would it just be simpler to ditch the wife?!!

Re: [LegacyUG] Set Relationships for both spouses

2007-06-20 Thread Elizabeth Cunningham
I made one of our kids the starting point. Then I get both families.
Crude, but it works.

That's been fine, albeit slow to do some tasks such as create web pages.
BUT, and it's a big but for me :-

If I set relationships with me as the starting person, then all my wife's
family are unrelated. This isn't much help when researching parts of her
tree. So I then set relationships to my wife. But the next thing I get is an
email about someone in my tree. So I have to do set relationships again

Would it be logical/possible to have the set relationships option able to
use a starting family (rather than person) and report two relationships -
left one based on the husband and the right one based on the wife - maybe
using different colours?

e.g.

Great Grandfather / -
- / Grand Aunt
3rd cousin 2 times removed / 6th cousin 5 times removed

- or would it just be simpler to ditch the wife?!!

Re: [LegacyUG] Set Relationships for both spouses

2007-06-20 Thread Cathy

Hi Jack,

If you have children, the logical thing is to set relationships to one of them.

If not there may be another person who is related to both sides of
the tree. I often set relationships to one of my great nephews as his
ancestors are related to both my father's extended family and one of
my mother's sister-in-law's family and so more clearly shows up why
various people are in my database.

Cheers,
Cathy

RE: [LegacyUG] Set Relationships for both spouses

2007-06-20 Thread La Nell Shores
I use my son to set the relationships on. That way I get relationships for
both my husbands and my lines. I can always subtract on level to know what
the relationship is for me or my husband.
