[LegacyUG] Picture Links - assistance required please.
I am using Windows 7 Legacy Deluxe v 7.5.0.112. I backup every other time I use Legacy and yesterday made a mess of some entries so I decided to restore the files from the previous backup (as I have done before if really necessary). This time I restored, went to my pictures for something and the dreaded ? mark is on all of the pictures. My photos are stored on my E drive in folders and sub folders, Legacy and backups are stored on the C drive, and the only time I have had this problem before was when I was moving from one computer to another. I have gone to Options/Customise/Locations/View Current List of Multimedia Locations and none of the paths line up with where my files are, but under the Picture Sound Sideo and Files the location to look for the files is correct for the E drive. When I tell Legacy to check for the picture file itself it doesn’t search in the correct location but under a location that is a sub folder under the E drive that is not actually used in Legacy Apart from going through the whole picture file again and searching for the pictures myself is there something else I can do? I have done a File Maintenance and that has not changed anything. Before I sit down for two or three days and manually find all the files is there anything else I can do please??? Many thanks in advance. Marion, You only need to go to one picture from each of your picture folders, provided that you do not have duplicated file names. i find that the best way is to go to one of the pictures with the '?' on it, select that one and opt to search for the file yourself, go to the file and click 'Open'. All files in that folder should now be found. Thanks Ron, Sadly I have folders for each family with several same named sub folders (Documents, Photos, Census, Misc) under each one! I set it up years and a quarter ago and have never been able to face changing the system, which is why I had to do the pictures sub folder by sub folder when I orginally moved computers. I still can't work out why the picture location would have changed when I just restored from a previous backup - I've done this before and haven't had the problem! I also can't work out why Legacy won't look in the location when it is told to search and the link is shown as the E drive. Re: [LegacyUG] Picture Links - assistance required please.
Marion, You are correct in saying that restoring your Family File should have had no effect on the links with you pictures etc., and I have no idea why this should have happened. As far as the the picture locations are concerned, I take it that you are referring to CustomiseOtherLocations; I have only ever regarded these as the default setting for telling the program where to start when registering a new file. To be honest I have never found it to be particularly useful, and generally do not bother with it. I am afraid that I know of no other option other than the suggestion which I have already made. Hi Dennis, There are paths that show \\Pavilion\marion\My Documents\My Pictures\Family Tree (and then the folder and sub folders where the files are held) the problem with this is that Pavilion is the old computer that I used to use about 6 months ago. Then there are paths that show C:\Documents and Settings\Marion\My Documents (and repeat the previous folders and different sub folders that I have used in the past) Again these have no relation to this computer. When everything was brought over from this computer all of the photos and documents were transferred into the E drive, since then there have been numerous extra folders and sub folders added to the E drive on this computer. Hi Marion, You said: Again these have no relation to this computer. When everything was brought over from this computer all of the photos and documents were transferred into the E drive, since then there have been numerous extra folders and sub folders added to the E drive on this computer. When you got the new computer and moved all of the pictures to the E: Drive, what did you do to change all of the multimedia paths to the E drive? If you didn't do anything, perhaps all of the old paths have been 'out of date' all along. Yes, you would have correct links to anything you have linked since you moved to the new computer, but existing paths would not have changed unless you took some specific action to do so. Keeping multimedia under My Documents is not recommended due to difficulty in transferring from one computer to another. Did you ever see your multimedia on the new computer? No, but if you want to submit a suggestion using the Suggest a new feature link in the Support section of the Legacy Home tab or the Make a Suggestion link under Help Center on the Legacy website, we'll pass it on to the programmers. [LegacyUG] Mapping
Hi again. Can I use the mapping feature to show where various families were? (two different families at the same time? or is this another yeeechhh? ) Would LTools help? or a totally different program? I looked at Map My Family, and it's not what I want. Specifically, I want to see a family in a Switzerland area and a family in a Germany area to see how far they migrated to get together. I have some specific city/canton information, but not all. Re: [LegacyUG] Global Removal of Source
Thanks Ron, but I tried that in a previous situation, but I think I attempted to blank out the detail instead of the name of the source, which resulted in the source still being there with no detail. I'll experiment and see what I come up with, but what I don't like about the SEARCH and REPLACE is that it does not give you the ID or name of the record that is being updated, so you have to update records blindly. Maybe I should suggest an enhancement because that, to me, is a deficit in the programming. That will create a blank source at the top of the master source list which will still be assigned to all the same records. [LegacyUG] Best practice for adding scans/PDFs of source documents
My family has a large number of source documents and I want to have them as part of the digital record. I was hoping that there would be a way to link the scanned images of the original documents to the sources or better yet to the events as they are listed in Legacy. [LegacyUG] Locations - Old Vs. New
I've seen this discussed many times. I prefer to use the location as it was at the time of the event. Searching the archives, most responded that they show the current location in Notes. I'm currently entering family who settled in Portsmouth, RI, in 1638 - starting out with my ancestor who had 14 children. I must add the current location for these parents and their children - and then their descendants until the State of Rhode Island was formed. It seems there must be an easier way. Any thoughts? Re: [LegacyUG] Best practice for adding scans/PDFs of source documents
Since those digital images ARE the sources of your information, it seems appropriate to create a SOURCE for each of those items and attach that digital image to that source. Then when you add a bit of information or an event, you will add the appropriate source and it will already have the digital image saved within. Personally, I also attach my digital images to the events which is probably just double work but it's a step or two quicker for me to see the image and I often like to see the images for my events (like census) I'm not the most experienced pro at using sourcing, pictures, or any of the other fun features Legacy has but that's my simple approach to it. Re: [LegacyUG] Locations - Old Vs. New
I guess I don't understand the reluctance to use the note field since you only have to input it ONCE and it automatically populates the same note for every instance in which that location name is used. Plus, it transfers well to websites in gedcoms, etc. You could use Rhode Island Colony (or whatever you settle on for the historical name), then just put a short remark in the adjacent note field telling when Rhode Island became a State. I'm one who does the opposite, putting in the note to tell what existed before, but I understand the historical argument. Re: [LegacyUG] Mapping
I guess no one chimed in here, so I'll give you an idea that you might be able to build on. As far as I know, Legacy can only show you one location at a time in its mapping system. If I'm wrong about that, I'm sure someone will correct me in a hurry. However, there are web-based programs where you can show more than one location on the map at the same time, so you can keep that in mind if you intend to ever utilize your information on a website. For example, if a particular family emigrated to California from Michigan, both of those events could show on a Bing or Google mapping system at the same time (you may have to adjust the zoom). On the other hand, if you are speaking about showing how two different families changed their residences, such as the children of the parents moving from Michigan to California, that might require special software. However, I do have a sort of work-a-round suggestion that might be possible, or at least food for thought. You could create an EVENT which says: Parents' Residence: or something that describes what you are after. Then when you input the place name in that event on the child's record, all those locations could show up on your web-based database on the same map. Again, I'm not sure if Legacy has that ability. Just food for thoughtperhaps someone else might come up with some other ideas. If this is not clear, just let me know and I can give you some links to check our website to see how this displays. Just ignore those Errors for these locations, they are NEVER going to include ANY of the History of any location. Any location before 1776 time period should use the Colony name(s). Just curious, David. What errors are you talking about? I'm only familiar with the County Verifier which tells you that a certain county did not exist until such and such a date, etc. Jerry - MerriamFamilyTree.org On 12/13/2011 9:03 PM, David C Abernathy wrote: Just ignore those Errors for these locations, they are NEVER going to include ANY of the History of any location. [LegacyUG] online index citation
How would one correctly cite an online index of vital records? The info was extracted and published by a Historical Society. I have searched EE, by Mills and can't seem to find a good fit. Thank you. RE: [LegacyUG] Advanced Sourcing to One Selected Event
Sherry got back to me on this one. Here is what I came up with to try to explain it better: Pasting an event to a tagged group of individuals (lets call this Enhancement #1) would be a step in the right direction. Enhancement #2, another step in the right direction would be the ability in Advanced Sourcing to paste a source citation/detail from the source clipboard to a new event to be created in a tagged group of individuals. Dennis Kowallek has a tool in his LTools to create an event and paste it with an existing source citation/detail to a tagged group of individuals. However, one must know the IDSX number of the source citation/detail from tblSX in the Access database. So it would be nice to have this enhancement built into the Advanced Sourcing feature of Legacy. Another nice aid, Enhancement #3, would be the ability in Advanced Sourcing to link a source citation/detail from the source clipboard to existing events in a tagged group of individuals which events have the exact same Fact Type, Description, Date, and Place. (Currently, Advanced Sourcing only links to ALL events of tagged individuals, which is only useful if each tagged individual only has only one existing event.) Now imagine that Millennia provides these first three enhancements in a future upgrade. Im all happy and use Enhancement 1 to paste an event with its source citation/detail to a family of 12 individuals. (Note, the current way I would do this is to copy the event to the Event Clipboard from the individual where I first created it and then open each of the other 11 individuals and paste the event.) The event and its source citation/detail now exists as twelve different records in the database. Three months later, I want to change something I have typed in the source citation/detail that is linked to the event. I have to open the source citation/detail of the event of each individual separately to make the change so that it is consistent in all twelve places. This is a huge headache. And I am currently living it with a file of thousands of individuals with tens of thousands of source citations/details with which I used the Source Clipboard liberally to paste common source citation/details on a regular basis. To help relieve me of this ongoing headache, hopefully Millennia will provide the following: Enhancement #4 Millennia creates an enhancement that allows me to change a copied source citation/detail in all places where it has been pasted at the same time with a single change and save action. From the Assigned Sources For window of one of the individuals or marriages that has the source citation/detail pasted to it (or from the Sources tab of the Name List window), I would highlight the source citation/detail that has been copied to many places and that I want to change in all places, and then I would click on a button that says Edit All Copies of Detail. The program then tags all of the source citation/detail index numbers (IDSX in tblSX) that are exact copies of that source citation/detail. Then, when Im all done making changes to that source citation/detail and click on Save, the change saves to all of the tagged source citation/detail index numbers, after which it clears the tags in preparation for the next time the feature is used. Note, Millennia has already figured out how to recognize when a source citation/detail is exactly the same as another, because the reports feature is able to print a source citation/detail that has many copies only once in the endnotes of a report. Now, Im just asking that Millennia use a similar capability to make changes to copies source citations/details. Of course. Another way to accomplish enhancement #4 (and make a much more efficient database) is to reconfigure the data structure of the database so that a single source citation/detail record can be linked to any number of events in any number of individuals and marriages. So, when I link a source citation/detail to an event that is pasted to twelve different individuals, when I go back to change something in the source citation/detail three months later, I only have to change one source citation/detail record referenced by twelve event records, not twelve source citations/detail records referenced by twelve event records. This would be a major change to the way Legacy works (no more need for a source clipboard), and so would probably be a big pill for Millennia to swallow. The four numbered enhancements provided above essentially go together as a package. For those of you who use the source clipboard liberally like I do, what do you think? -Original Message- From: Sherry/Support [mailto:she...@legacyfamilytree.com] Sent: Monday, December 12, 2011 1:03 PM To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Advanced Sourcing to One Selected Event I've been working with Lee on this and haven't figured out yet why entering an event
Re: [LegacyUG] Advanced Sourcing to One Selected Event
Not that I haven't messed up and had to go thru this with a set or two of citations, but I'm doing my best now to get the citation the way I want in the clipboard(s) and add it all right the first time. Then I'm moving on to my next bit of research, because research is the fun part. I'm also a self-proclaimed recovering controlling perfectionist... trying to get myself away from having to have everything perfect... reworking, reworking, etc. So, I don't think I would use these enhancements - or at least try not to be in the position to want them. I would rather the programmers work on new features, not aids for making corrections. Brian, In regards to the last 5 words of your e-m, is incorrect. Only room 6 images shows in the dialog; you can always add more. Just remember that you can not make any use of the images past the one marked as preferred. They may be of help to you for record keeping, but of no use in reports or web pages. This is a short fall of long standing. Wm Voss On 13-Dec-11 9:57 PM, Mark Lang wrote: Brian, In regards to the last 5 words of your e-m, is incorrect.
