Re: [LegacyUG]

2012-06-02 Thread Ron Ferguson
Syble,

I have looked carefully at your site and the html, but cannot spot anything.
There are a couple of things which you might like to look at. Using the
Library Books Icon on Family View, click the Edit Detail button - do the
details appear on the right of the box (I am assuming you are using Source
Writer), If not then re-enter the details.

Check whether the Sources appear in the file on your Computer i.e. go to
your web pages and double click file named
148.html. From looking at the web page I very much doubt it but best to
check.

In either case it is probably worthwhile removing and re-entering the
source.

The 2nd one is clearly sourced in my Legacy file, I've not noticed this

Re: [LegacyUG] Ahnentafel Report

2012-06-02 Thread Paula Ryburn
I turned off the printing of everything in the report options to get the
shortest version, but the vitals for each person are included.
I found that my first missing ancestor would be #32. However, the report
doesn't really give me a clue whose father that is... So, it assumes we know how
the numbers relate, right? And it is #16's father, right?
I think this stripped down version is fine for the stated requirement,
especially since it's not like you're going to print it. Mine is only 6 pages
anyway for 10 generations.
Thanks for this interesting topic.

Howland Davis and Gene A,
I agree with Howland that Legacy does *NOT* provide an Ahnentafel
Report. At best, Legacy provides a semi-stripped down ancestor report
which passes for an Ahnentafel Report.
IMHO, an Ahnentafel Report simply provides the following:

#1. My name
#2. My father's name
#3. My mother's name
#4. My father's father's name
#5. My father's mother's name
#6. My mother's father's name
#7. and on

Legacy adds much more, such as information pertaining to the parents
of each person above, generation numbers, spouses, and on.
Howland wishes to create a short Ahnentafel report in order to find
my first unknown ancestor . I would like to do that for my family
also, but the Legacy report is *NOT* short, not concise, etc., as the
generally accepted Ahnentafel Report is.

Valerie,

The one aspect of your enquiry which I find puzzling, especially for a One-Name
Study, is that post-codes are relatively modern. If my memory serves me
correctly they were only introduced in the mid 1960s, so do not apply before
then, at least for countries in the UK. It may have been a little earlier in the
Republic of Ireland, but I would not have thought by much.

Michele,
You are probably all done moving things by now, but I broke my arm early last
month and have been out-of-touch.
Since it's just 200 pictures, I would just leave them safe and sound in the
Legacy folder.
If they are really pictures, I keep the good resolution one on my external hard
drive with all my other photos. (and there was a good webinar about how to
organize photos) And if I want to attach them, I save them lower resolution and
copy them over.
If they are images, like of census records or scanned death certificates, I only
have them in the Legacy folder.

Last year, I went through a standardize the names of my images exercise, and
the re-linking was excruciating. Just saying.

Re: [LegacyUG] What is your strategy for PRUNING your backup zip files?

2012-06-02 Thread Paula Ryburn
Bill,
In general, if I didn't add any images during a session, then I just back up the
data upon exit; if I did add images, then I back up data and multi-media.
Then I keep the last couple of full (data and multi-media) backups.
I back up to an external hard drive, so I have plenty of space, SO I don't have
a hard and fast rule about deleting backups.
When I do take a look, I will delete the old partial (data only) backups ---
the ones before my latest full backup. And I delete many of the recent full
backups (keeping latest two, as I said).
Probably because I am a packrat, I keep some of the older full backups, too...
like one per year?
Additionally, deleting means sending it to the Recycle Bin, so until I clean
the files out of there, they are still available. (tho still taking up space,
too) I don't remember ever having to pull something back from the Recycle Bin,
tho.

Subject: [LegacyUG] What is your strategy for PRUNING your backup zip files?

First Concern:

May I assume that the zip sets created by Legacy 7.5 (+latest update)
include everything I need to recover all my research? I am assuming
this is the case based on my reading. Just checking in to hear your
experience with backup and recovery. I have yet to attempt recovery
of Legacy files.

Second Concern:

By default, I believe, Legacy is creating a set of backup-zips with a
time stamp each time I elect to backup on EXIT. At least that is
what seems to be happening on my Legacy installation.

Let me assume this is the Legacy default setting. I see that I can
shut off the time-stamp-file-name in the options but I like the
concept of having multiple recovery files.

I now have 30 sets (and growing) of data-zips and multimedia-zips.
This will continue to grow unless I have a pruning strategy. I am
currently backing up all 30 sets to the cloud and more as they are
created until I sort this out.

What is your backup pruning strategy for Legacy zips? How many backup
sets do you keep so you can go back in time? Is there a setting in
Legacy to keep only 7 backups automatically, similar to iTunes podcast
management?

Thanks ... Bill

I have another suggestion for a trip to the FHL. Take the time to visit with a
specialist at the information desk at the beginning of your visit; share your
research goals and your To Do List. They can give you some great feedback and
suggestions that will keep you on track and avoid wasting your time there.

I found this extremely useful on my last visit there; I'd never done that before
and from now on, it will be my first stop. For instance, they let me know why a
couple of books on my list really wouldn't help me and they directed me to
several other resources that were not on my list.

Good luck and happy hunting! Kathy

You shouldn't have to do that. I don't consider the title associated with a tag
to be a tooltip. A tooltip is what should pop up when the mouse hovers over a
button or entry field.

Cogitating on this (and other facts about the universe) a little further, I
guess the tags shown on Family View do behave like buttons. They can be left-
and right-clicked. I suppose they are buttons and so can be regarded as
controls, which can have tooltips associated with them. But, I still don't think
you should have to switch them on like all the other tooltips.

[LegacyUG] MRIN's: Two MRIN's one marriage.

2012-06-02 Thread Sandra Hopgood

Brian
I tried deleting MRIN #265 in the manner suggested, with no luck.
The children of #265 ended up with no parents. If I then give them a father
George #139 they have no mother and if I try to add Margaret #140 as mother it
says she is already spouse to George #139.
Which ever way I tackle it the full siblings (7 in all) appear as 1/2 siblings
to each other and their parents (#139 #140) appear as married to eachother
twice with different MRINs (#47 #265) even though they only married once.
Anything I try results in losing some children or messages saying the parents
already exist.

The MRIN'S share identical marriage details. I want to merge the MRIN's as
everything else is correct but I can't work out how to do this.
I'm stumped and very frustrated.
Any other suggestions??? Please
Sandra

If both MRIN 47 and 265 both have the same list of children then the
solution is to delete the excess marriage MRIN 265. If not make sure
that all the children are linked to MRIN 47.
Open the Marriage List and select MRIN 265.
Click on Options and select remove the marriage link.
Ignore the warning about children of the marriage and Click Yes.
The marriage link will no longer exist an only the correct marriage MRIN
47 will continue with the correct list of children.

2012-06-02 Thread Gene Hutson
you could try unlinking them from the wrong set of parents and re-linking them
to the correct set,
this would then allow you to work out whatever bump in the road you have.
