Re: [LegacyUG] Children

2014-08-01 Thread Brett McL Robinson
Thank you all for your responses to my posting.

I will also make a Children suggestion, piggybacking on Ron Taylor's
posting:

1In Marriage, add the total number of children in a data box (if
known). Legacy program to display the current number of children.

2In the Edit Children window, Legacy program to include Death Date
column. Add an optional research date in a data box (remember the last
used date). Legacy program to display number of current children to
marriage and alive at that research date, and the total number of
children from the marriage data box.

3Family window to include Children numbers (with or without names) up to
the number in the data box, with the click to add in the next
unrecorded line.

4Family Group Records (and similar) to include a line for every child
recorded and additional numbered blank lines up to the total number in
the data box.

In the meantime I have decided to use [[private notes]] (eg [[4
children]]) in the Marriage Notes. This way there is minimal input
effort, and minimal clean-up required, and no mess (eg confusion,
redundancy etc) if the note is left after the children have been
entered, in part or in total. The down side is that I will be relying on
the Marriage Note highlight to remind me of what I have done, and there
is no clear indication of the children on the Family screen. And I will
wait for Legacy to add a children number feature!

Cheers, Brett

I have been adding family details and have several families where
my source (a descendant of one of the families) has merely noted
the number of children, with no names. I am tempted to ignore the
number, but realise that it would be useful to note it with the
family to help as a check in the future. Is there any way to add a
number to the family records that will show up in the children
 display?

I tried adding an unknown gender child named Given: 4 children
(Colin+Karen) (for example), and wonder if anyone has tried this
or something like it and can report on its success or limitations.
This child would be over-written when the last child was added.

Many sites, such as Find A Grave, require decimal

You can always overwrite whatever coordinates you already

Bottom line: if you really want the exact coordinates, you

church, castle, etc. or its ruins. For a town, I am more

I have seen many, many threads here discussing the use of locations and

I'm not sure it would work for John's Poland/Russia examples, but maybe for

most cases you just have a few cases of near to indicate...?
You would need to try it on a field or two run some reports to see if you

This approach would probably not work for someone who uses the Address table

Legacy is flexible; I'm just offering up another table/place to be flexible.

Hi Ron,
I have been doing something
similar to you but I am trying to minimise the number variations of the same
location in the Master Location List e.g.
Sitaniec, Zamość, Crown
Province of Galicia, Habsburg Empire
Sitaniec, Zamość, Lublin,
Duchy of Warsaw
Sitaniec, Zamość, Lublin,
Kingdom of Poland ('Russian Poland')
Sitaniec, Zamość, Lublin,
Republic of Poland
of Sitaniec, Zamość,
Lublin, Kingdom of Poland ('Russian Poland')
of Sitaniec, Zamość,
Lublin, Republic of Poland
I am trying to make my
family history story very readable and presented elegantly without sacrificing
accuracy or details, so I am conscious that my Location Index may be confusing
for readers, especially with modifiers.
I think what I would need
is another field, where you add Individuals’ Information to the Family View (and
Family Group Reports). This could be an optional drop down field (probably
placed below “Christened”) and where you could add your own element e.g.
“Earliest Known Residence” or whatever individual Legacy users may want. I
realize such information could be added as an Event or in notes, but it would
much more convenient for me while researching, or for readers of my family
history,  to immediately see
accurate details about each person without having to dig for it.

If
you add the modifiers to the Master Location List and link your individual

There is a field in the tblLR (Master Locations Table) called
Preposition which can be set and used in reports as you described.  There
is also a file C:\...Documents\Legacy Family
Tree\_AppData\Misc\Preposition_English.lst which is used by the Master Locations
List to sort locations.  It does it by removing the words in that file from
the location, putting it on the end of the location name, then sorting the list
so that all locations that are the same will display next to each other and the
preposition tacked onto the end.  That is helpful.  Some of the
entries in that list are not actually prepositions.  In fact,  some of
the entries are multiple words.  I think a better term for them would be
location modifiers instead of prepositions.

What
would be great but would require some extensive re-writing would be to have an
actual database table of location modifiers.  That table could come into
play as a pull down list (similar to Child Status, Event Type, Surname List,
etc.) where you can select the location modifier to be applied to a specific
location field.  That would mean that a location modifier key field be
inserted into every table where a link to the tblLR is used.  The

location modifier is blank.  The main effect that a

Ed,
There is one called Multiple Lines of Descent.  You would have to read the
Help.  I am not familiar with it, but I have seen it recommended here when
someone asked for an everyone report.
Are you on 7.5 or 8.0?
How many individuals are we talking about here?  1000?  100,000?
For me, I could run an Ancestor Book Report starting with my daughter and get
just about everyone in an inverted triangle... know what I mean?
Then, I could run Descendant Books ( or Desc. Narratives) starting with the
oldest ancestors.  Lots of redundancy, but (in my case) I would see all my
daughter's 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc. cousins (that I know about have entered).
Now... these are not narrative in the sense that you could read it like a
book (even if you choose the right event print options)...

What are you really trying to DO?  What do you need the report or data FOR?  ;)
We have folks here who have done it all and done a lot of unique reporting.
But sometimes we need more information.
Thanks,

 Anyway, there is a reason,
Many years ago I had Dennis at LTools create a process to automatically
add spouses and parents to my database.
(see the Create spouses option in LTools)
That worked fine, but as the years have gone by, I realized that the
process was a bit too much.

I should have limited it to specific descendant lines and not the entire
 database.
So, I have these parents out there, most all are UnknownM (Surname) +
UnknownF Unknown that are not really needed, as maybe they are the parents
 of an aunt or cousin.
I want to 'trim' those from the database.

But, some of the parents have a second child married into the database, in
which case I want to keep them
(in order to preserve the relationships)
Hence, the search for parents with only one child.

Your code worked well and provides a list from which I can use to review
and delete the couple if appropriate.
Which just helps to keep my database relevant and compact.

I really wish Legacy would have a central page where the various SQL
queries could be posted for all to share and use.

 Thanks for your help!!

Re: [LegacyUG] Prepositions for locations- Family View and Family Group Records ?

Wow, thank you Paula! I have rediscovered the Address field! I had completely
forgotten about it as I only ever used it a few times, a number of years ago,
but did not find it useful for my purposes. I did not even realise Address
could be displayed in book reports or Family Group Records. As you suggested, I
played around with it and think I can use it to meet my needs- to comment on
locations, rather than adding locations in the Address field. It does not
display in the Family View but I think I can live with that.

I use another database for addresses of living cousins, and it is very rare to
get an address of ancestors from hamlets or villages in Europe. Occasionally I
get something like “house 18”. Therefore the Address field is freely available
for other uses.

I agree with Paula- software such as Legacy is to be used however one wants or
needs. Legacy is very flexible but all programs have limitations so users may
need to “think outside the box”.

I know there are those on this list who will shoot down this idea quickly and
vehemently, but...
Have you thought of using the Address field?
I used to do this to indicate probably or add on the farm... that was
awhile ago, so my memory is fuzzy.
I have seen many, many threads here discussing the use of locations and
addresses so I won't go into details (you can search the archives) don't
need to hear both sides again. ;)

I'm not sure it would work for John's Poland/Russia examples, but maybe for
Ron's Salt Lake City examples? Especially if there is a known city used in
most cases you just have a few cases of near to indicate...?
You would need to try it on a field or two run some reports to see if you
like the format.

This approach would probably not work for someone who uses the Address table
for addresses. ;) ...or maybe it would?
Legacy is flexible; I'm just offering up another table/place to be flexible.

Hi Ron,
I have been doing something similar to you but I am trying to minimise the
number variations of the same location in the Master Location List e.g.
Sitaniec, Zamość, Crown Province of Galicia, Habsburg Empire
Sitaniec, Zamość, Lublin, Duchy of Warsaw
Sitaniec, Zamość, Lublin, Kingdom of Poland ('Russian Poland')
Sitaniec, Zamość, Lublin, Republic of Poland
of Sitaniec, Zamość, Lublin, Kingdom of Poland ('Russian Poland')
of Sitaniec, Zamość, Lublin, Republic of Poland
I am trying to make my family history story very readable and presented
elegantly without sacrificing accuracy or details, so I am conscious that my
Location Index may be confusing for readers, especially with modifiers.
I think what I would need is another field, where you add Individuals’
Information to the Family View (and Family Group Reports). This could be an
optional drop down field (probably placed below “Christened”) and where you
could add your own element e.g. “Earliest Known Residence” or whatever
individual Legacy users may want. I realize such information could be added as
an Event or in notes, but it would much more convenient for me while
researching, or for readers of my family history, to immediately see accurate
details about each person without having to dig for it.

John,
If you add the modifiers to the Master Location List and link your individual
records to those modified locations, they should show in the reports and
elsewhere. Look at the examples I gave of Salt Lake City. Those are actual
entries in my Master Locations List.

Donna,

You may have been linking to media files that were inside a zipped file which
is a special kind of folder. That method was addressed recently by some users
on this group and it helped to resolve several problems. The conclusion was to
not do that. Always link to media that is not in a compressed folder. Other
than that, you can place your media files just about anywhere you wish, link to
them, and be happy. I like to put my media files in a root level folder
because I collaborate with several other researchers. Some of those
researchers still use Windows XP while others use Vista, Windows7, and
Windows8. With a root level folder like C:\Collaborator1 it is easy for
collaborator 1 to put whatever media they want in that folder and not be
concerned with other collaborators messing with their collection.
Collaborator2 likewise has their own collection folder and so forth. The
collaborators can make any sub-folders they need under their root level folder.
The Legacy backup of media only puts the media files into the backup for the
database being backed up. The only precaution with this method is to not use
the Gather Media routine as it will move all the media to some other location
regardless of the various collaborators who collected it and kept it
separately. The Gather routine probably does work for a single researcher that
does not collaborate.

Re: [LegacyUG] pictures

2014-08-01 Thread Ron Taylor
You could put all the pictures in one folder or put them in any structure of
folders and sub-folders you wish.  Then run the Relinker.  If the actual file
names have not changed, the Relinker should be able to find them and fix the
link to them.  Once you have all media relinked, then you can backup the data
and media.  Delete the media folders if you don't need the pictures for
anything else.  Then unzip the backup media file to the C:\ and it will lay
down the folders and files as they were at the time of the backup.  Only the
linked files will be in the backup.  So, if you had 10,000 picture files that
you copied from the Mac to the PC and only 5,000 of them were linked to the
Reunions file, you should only have 5,000 on the PC when you finish with the
Relinker, Backup, Delete, and restore.

Simple place to start would be a Google shared folder.  Each file in the folder
should be descriptively named and there should be one Index file in the
folder also that could list all the files and include a short summary of how
the routine is used and maybe a little about why it was developed.

I have quite a few scripts that I am willing to share also.  They can all be
loaded into Ltools and run from it.  Handy if someone does not have their own
copy of Microsoft Access or is unfamiliar with some of the other free database
tools like LibreOffice or OpenOffice.

If anyone has a good suggestion as to where to place the content, let me

In the meantime I will gather my own little list of often useful SQL

Jay, if you feel this would be useful maybe you could maintain an online
library for these as I doubt Millennia would officially sanction support
 them.

 Ron,

Not sure why your emails keep ending up in my spam folder..

But, some of the parents have a second child married into the database,
in which case I want to keep them
(in order to preserve the relationships)
Hence, the search for parents with only one child.

Your code worked well and provides a list from which I can use to review
and delete the couple if appropriate.
Which just helps to keep my database relevant and compact.

I really wish Legacy would have a central page where the various SQL
queries could be posted for all to share and use.

 Thanks for your help!!

[LegacyUG] Backing up family file and what to do with the backup

2014-08-01 Thread Stu and Priscilla Fanning
I understand that it is a good idea to backup my family file on a separate
drive.  I have been able to do that.  It gives the family file name, date and
time, and that it is a compressed (zipped) file.

When I look in my hard drive, I see files that have a circle at the beginning
with an L in it.  The file type for those is Legacy Genealogy Software.

Then for some of my family files I also have GED, Text Document, and TC files.

For some other family files I have those 4 files plus FG file.

And for another, those 5 files plus a PPL file.

When I am looking at a family file in Legacy and wish to open another family
file, I am offered only the circles with the L -- the Legacy Genealogy Software
type of files -- not all of the type of files that are in the hard drive.

That seems to work and what I have added to a file seems to be there after
closing the file and opening it again.
*
What are all of these files -- GED, Text Document, TC, FG, and PPL ?
*
At what point do I need to use the compressed (zipped) file and how do I open
that ?
When I am using family file B and want to go to family file A which I have
saved, I look in the other drive and it does not show up.  There is no
possibility of finding a compressed (zipped) file.  That is not a type of file
that is listed to open.

Also, how many of these zipped files do other people keep?  Do you delete some
of the older ones after you've saved the next one?

Thanks,
   Priscilla
