Re: [LegacyUG] Reordering source citations

2015-03-12 Thread Sherry/Support
Gene,

Sort them in the Assigned Sources List - highlight the source you want
to move within an event and click the up or down button.

From the Help topic for the Assigned Sources List:

Rearranging the Source Citations
You can change the order of the source citation for a specific event
by placing the cursor on the source line you want to move and then
clicking the up or down arrow near the lower left corner of the list.

[LegacyUG] GeoExtraCodes-Alt.txt broken

Could someone please help me get the GeoExtraCodes-Alt.txt file
working? It hasn't worked for me since the release of version 8. I

It is working for me with the file in the users path along with the
GeoExtraCodes.txt file. To get the names to change however I had to use
the Geo DB buttons on the Master location list or when editing a
specific location. Legacy would not modify the location name if I typed

[LegacyUG] GeoExtraCodes-Alt.txt FINAL FIX

2015-03-12 Thread Mark Wilson
Okay, Brian, here is my particular fix for getting Legacy to properly
recognize the 'GeoExtraCodes-Alt.txt' file in the directory

  C:\%UserProfile%\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData\Misc

The fact that Legacy was recognizing the 'GeoExtraCodes-Alt.txt' in the

  C:\%UserProfile%\My Podcasts

directory in the first place was the clue. I took the chance and
deleted everything under the 'My Podcasts' directory, hopefully forcing
Legacy to read the 'GeoExtraCodes-Alt.txt' file in 'My Documents' directory.

It worked! Now I can move on on to solving other universal mysteries
such as why buttered bread always falls butter-side down! LOL! Thanks

2015-03-12 Thread Brian/Support
No No No! Please get all your data, backups and Media out of the Program
files area. Legacy 8 has implemented a new Windows Friendly policy of
putting your personal data etc. into you’re my documents instead of the
restricted access Program files area. I do not know which version of
Windows you are running but you are risking a mess with active files
stored in Program Files.

Newer versions of Windows play games with where files are physically
stored when you try to write to files and folders in the C:\Program
files area. They create a dummy hidden folder called a virtual store
where it actually stores the files even while it makes it look like
the file is in the Program files folders. The program files area folders
for Legacy are created and used only to store user related files needed
to create the files you need in your My Docs folders to operate Legacy.

You should point all your data to the My Docs folders Legacy created for
you or to other custom folders that at NOT in C:\Program files.

Re: [LegacyUG] Re: GeoExtraCodes-Alt.txt FIXED

2015-03-12 Thread Mark Wilson
Brian, I'm really glad you mentioned the quirks of Windows file/folder
behavior. I had forgotten all about the Explorer Shell namespace modus
operendi. That jogged my memory and made me think to look in the
registry to see just where the operating system (Win 7 Ultimate, in my
case) was looking for the Documents folder. I can't tell you when,
where, or how it got changed, but the Explorer User Shell pointed the
'Personal' folder to, you probably already guessed,

  %UserProfile%\My Podcasts

Yikes! There's the problem! So, I modified the 'Personal' key to

  %UserProfile%\Documents

Voilà! (I'm a happy camper now!)

Yes, I was aware that a Microsoft's Compatible with Windows
certification requires that an app use the appropriate special folder
names and locations to store documents and app settings. I just hate to
see the Documents folder get so cluttered that it becomes difficult to
locate anything. It seems that the Documents folder is starting to be
used more and more as a registry folder. Someday, if the practice
persists, someone will need to develop a Document Folder Manager/Editor
Defragger app similar to a beefed-up Registry Editor. Remember that
Windows v3.1 had a registry, but it was seldom used. Now look at the
behemoth that the registry is today! I foresee the same happening to
the Documents folder.

Per your suggestion, Brian, I moved my data and media to the
'Documents\Legacy Family Tree' folder. The Documents folder path is
pointed to properly now, and life's great!

I probably wouldn't have thought to check the registry key had you not
mentioned the quirks of Windows file/folder behavior. Thank you for your
help!

No No No! Please get all your data, backups and Media out of the Program

putting your personal data etc. into you’re my documents instead of the
restricted access Program files area.

Thanks, Brian! If I figure this out, I'll let you know! There may be
others who are experiencing this weird phenomenon as well.

What are your default locations in the Go to Options Customize

[LegacyUG] Can Reports Capitalize Last Names?

2015-03-12 Thread GeoPappas
Is there any way to get reports to display the last names in UPPERCASE?

There is an option under Options - Customize - 3. Data Format - 3.4
Displaying Surnames that allows you to Show SURNAMES in uppercase
letters, but this option doesn't seem to be used by Legacy Charting.

Re: [LegacyUG] Can Reports Capitalize Last Names?

2015-03-12 Thread Cathy Pinner
You could also save it as part of your theme for each chart just as you
can save the settings for reports in Legacy, you can save your own theme
in charting.
OR if you always want surnames in Uppercase, you can change the Option
in Legacy (3.3) to store the surname in Uppercase. Then you have no
option in reports to use Mixed Case when that is desirable.
The option at 3.4 is only for the screen display, not reports or charting.

Re: [LegacyUG] Tagging Spouses of Related

2015-03-12 Thread Cathy Pinner
Hi Jay,
What you say is not quite correct. If you search for Relationship equals
Related, you do not get the spouses - only the blood related individuals.

To get just the spouses, first set a focus group or a tag for the line
you are working with.
Descendants of the furtherest away ancestor(s) relevant to that line -
not Entire Descendant line - just Descendants. Descendants does include
the spouses.

If you use a focus group, you need to turn that focus group into a
search list which can be done from the Miscellaneous tab in the search.
If you tag the descendants you need to first search for that tag (or in
the Name List use Search - show all tagged)

Now search within this search list - use the radio button at the bottom
of the Detailed Search screen - for Relationship does not equal related.
There's your list of spouses.

OK, having a moment here where I know this should be fairly easy to
do, but the logic is escaping me.

I want to tag all of the spouses of my blood related persons.

I can use the Related selector which gives me all my blood related
 AND their spouses.
But how do I trim out the blood relatives, leaving only their spouses?

Thank in advance for any help.
