Re: [LegacyUG] Media issue - Error 3163

2015-05-26 Thread Cathy Pinner
Hi Elizabeth,
The very long path you give suggests some are linked from within a media
backup.
You may be able to sort it out by going to View - Master Lists - Media
Folder List and changing any wrong folders to the ones that actually exist.
You do this by highlighting the path that needs to be changed and then
clicking the change button and navigating to the correct folder.
Before doing this you might check with the Tools - Media Relinker that
all media is currently linked and then start in the Master list by
purging unused folders.

Another way is to set Options - Customise 6.2 to a new location for your
media and using the Media Gatherer to move all media to that folder.

Recently I decided to stop using OneDrive and moved my Legacy file and

relinked all media. Everything was linked and going smoothly until I
tried a backup to my computer and included the media. My friend 3163

So, I went to Picture Center to check my 3000+ photos. In the Picture
Center Name List many of the already attached photos seem to have 2
 paths/targets.
 For example:
 C:\Users\Elizabeth\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Data\Branching Out v

 Users\Elizabeth\Desktop\Genealogy\1 Jennings Family\Cemetery\Saxon
 Cemetery\Fred A Barge Jr. grave.jpg.

If that’s the path, no wonder Legacy says its too long! Can anyone
tell me how to get just 1 path rather than the 2?

Here’s another issue: the second path above is referencing a folder
that no longer exists. I eliminated it in an effort to reduce the
 number of subfolders.
I believe the path should be C:\Users\Desktop\Genealogy 1\Jennings

Do I need to unlink everything and start over?

Many Thanks Everyone! I greatly appreciate your suggestions.

Are you aware of anyone with Vision problems using Legacy ?

If so what settings are they using ?

I have a friend who has Legacy 7 on a Notebook, but when they change to
Legacy settings to high Contrast, are unable to see a lot the content.

As high Contrast is a windows feature and may not affect colour in Legacy, I

RE: [LegacyUG] Check/Repair Steps

2015-05-26 Thread Alan Thompson
Sherry

I expected as much but thought I'd give it a try anyway. Because I load and
manipulate large amounts of data directly to the database using Microsoft
Access rather than the Legacy front end program, I thought it would be useful
to know all the things the check/repair routine already checks for so that I
can make sure that my own data upload and manipulation routines are consistent
with these. I already know some of the things it checks for as a result of
mistakes I have made when uploading data in the past, and have needed to
restore a backup as a result. I run check/repair at least once every day and
after each data upload or data manipulation routine when doing these so it is a
feature of the Legacy program that I very much rely on and appreciate.

Thanks

This is the American Legacy User Group and the programmers don't monitor it,
but the staff does.

We don't have a clue what the steps are either. Just as with other programming
code, I suppose the programmers don't consider this something that any of us
really need to know beyond what's in the Help file under File: Maintenance
Check and Repair Family File.

Alan, my steps go by so fast I don't even see all the numbers! Patsy's
suggestion to regularly run Check/Repair is an excellent one, especially if you
are doing a lot of work in the file.

On your c drive create a folder

Do you have more than 1 file or gedcom you need to reference, if not I see
no reason for the 1 Jennings Family

then do the subfolders
Cemetery\Saxon Cemetery\
etc.
I have over 20,000 headstones all linked in
genealogy/headstones/cemetery name/filename.

or 9,000 profile pictures in
genealogy/photos/portraits/

over 1000 family groups shots
genealogy/photos/families/

over 3000 marriage and anniv photos
genealogy/photos/couples/

simple is easier

you can repair all Legacy media paths with a program called LTools
Its the best 12 $ I ever spent!

Also these paths are for Media

Keep your program data in the expected path

Judy,

There's an extensive article in our Knowledge Base at
http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00401 which discusses
ways of customizing Windows and Legacy to help with visual
impairments. A lot of the customizing choices depends on the visual
difficulty as we all seem to need something different, so there will
be some trial and error to find out what fits for your friend's
friend.

Legacy does not do well with Windows High Contrast and that's been
reported to the programmers to see if it's something they can resolve.

Font sizes and styles can be changed via the Customise option. For most people,
Times New Roman font is the easiest to read, especially when reading for long
periods.

The Customise option also allows (limited) changing of background colours. I
suffer from Irlen Syndrome form of dyslexia, where changing background
brightness or colours (i.e. different parts of the light spectrum) can improve
to reading ability or efficiency or reduce eye strain. Individuals vary in
regard to which colours help them. For me, backgrounds of soft greens, blues
and greys are best.

* Besides Brian's suggestion to use a PDF driver, another
work-around given to us by a user experiencing it is1. In Legacy Charting,
select Publish on the ribbon and then select Email.2. In the Attach to
Email screen select PDF File for the format and click OK.3. The PDF version
of the chart opened in his PDF reader.4. In the PDF reader he clicked File
Save As completed the screen. *

Thanks for the quick reply.

I just tried your suggestion, but I got the same error message as soon as I
hit the OK button on the Attach to email dialog.

Re: [LegacyUG] Problem Exporting Legacy Chart to PDF Format

2015-05-26 Thread Sherry/Support
George,

You can get a small chart of 4-5 generations on one page, but not a
larger one, as Brian said, nor automatically.

To get a small chart on one page, click on the Drag all individuals
button on the side toolbar (it's the third from the bottom), grab the
chart and move it to the far upper left. You will also have to adjust
the Sizing Options and Title on the Appearance ribbon to squeeze the
boxes together.

Yes, I was just playing with that. The problem is that the chart is
extremely wide and most of those options are for a tall page (and not a wide
page). I have chosen a page that is 92x92 and the chart is still slightly
wider than that and printing on two pages (but barely). I am trying to
figure out if there is a way to create a new page size, but haven't figured
out if that is possible yet. I have also noticed a page size called
Postscript Custom Page Size, but that doesn't seem to do anything (as far as
 I can tell).

Is there a way from within Legacy Charting to force everything to fit on one
 page?

 Thanks.

Brian / Sherry:

Greetings.

Two questions:

(1) Is there any way to force a printout to fit on one page?

(2) Is there any way to change the paper size (so that I can make a huge
page)?

With either of those workarounds, I believe that I could then print the
chart to a PDF printer as you suggested.

Re: [LegacyUG] Problem Exporting Legacy Chart to PDF Format

2015-05-26 Thread GeoPappas
Brian:

Thanks for all of your help.

I have successfully created a workaround that will fit my needs (although
it isn't as easy as it would be if I could just hit the
Export to file button).

I was able to create a custom page size (120 wide x 20 high in my case)
for the PDF995 print driver. (You can find instructions for how to do that
here: http://www.pdf995.com/faq2.html)

I was then able to print the chart to the custom page size and it all came
out on one page. Success!

I hope that your team will be able to figure out the issue with Legacy
Charting soon. Although this works for me, I will need to create a custom
page size for every chart that I want to print.

Have a great day.
