Re: [LegacyUG] Trying to decide between Rootsmagic and Legacy 8 (or just stay with FTM for now)

2015-12-13 Thread Carolyn
I agree with Ana on this one, I find the Legacy wording too stilted, but its so
easy to create the report and then drop it into a word document.
Looking at the sample from Linda, which is very nice, Legacy will also allow
you to add your own background to a chart or tree.
I created a dropline chart with a photo of each person, and used an old sepia
photo of the street the family lived in as a background.
When this was faded a little it looked really good and has wowed all the
rellies.

I found the charting chapter in the manual very helpful for this, and creating
other customised charts.

I do use both Legacy and Rootsmagic, but I haven't tried to produce a book

2015-12-13 Thread William Boswell
That's a really nice book. I always wanted to do something like that only I
don't know how I'm going to split all the lines. Like you have done with
yours, a little history thrown in makes a big difference.

I've read both good and bad about Rootsmagic and I don't have any personal
experience with it. It's certainly more expensive than Legacy, but not as
overpriced as FTM which is still running at full price even though it will no
longer be available after the end of the year.

I started off with FTM long ago and would have stuck with it if they hadn't
gone the route they went starting with the 2008/2009 versions. I'm still
cleaning up the mess from FTM 2009 after exporting/importing into Legacy as a
GEDCOM. If you have to export from FTM to a GEDCOM, make sure the box that
says something about moving unknown text to Notes is not checked. I checked it
and all of my Source Details (Citations in FTM) were moved to the Comments
section. It created a nightmare that started in 2009. I have to go through
thousands of people to fix it. The good thing about it is I can go back to
people I haven't checked on in years and update their information.

The fortunate thing about most genealogy programs is you can export to an RTF
format then produce your own look. It might take some extra effort if you were
to copy and paste into MS Word where a custom template would work better in
this case. In Legacy, you can create it as a webpage then customize it in a
cheap or free HTML program for layout purposes then export to a PDF. There are
a lot of open source programs available and most are free at: www dot osalt
dot com

I thought I'd show you a sample portion of one of my books from FTM.

http://ge.tt/950yFXT2/v/0?c

I've been looking at both Rootsmagic and Legacy 8 and I don't doubt for a
moment they both do more than enough when it comes to recording my family
history. But for me I need to produce a book that looks clean and nice. In
looking at both RM and Legacy8 (both in trial versions) I'm not satisfied that
either will allow me to make reports like I want. I know some features are
disabled and I may find that I can do more than I anticipate with a full
version. I know both are cheap and some say just buy both but I am not in a
position to spend money on a program I won't be using. I want to be able to
produce the book without much effort when I make additions to my family
tree/history.

I looked at the family group sheet in both RM and Legacy 8. Neither looked
like they would produce the clean look of the one I have in my pdf.

Also, I think the pedigree chart background and having pics of each person
makes it nice to look at.

And I need to be able to make pages such as you see in this book: Chicago Fire,
Castle Garden Immigration, etc. - these are not connected to any person. In
FTM you can make a text page and copy and paste pictures onto it.

I do have to say that I like the cleaner, less complicated feel of Rootsmagic
but I feel like Legacy will be closer to what I need for book publishing.

I do appreciate your patience and kindness in talking to me about these things.
I know FTM will probably work for many years and maybe I just need to be
patient and see what comes down the road. I just don't want to put a lot more
effort into something I know I will have to totally redo when I move to another
program (the books, the family history portion at first glance seems to have
imported fairly well).

Thank you again!

Neither Legacy of Rootsmagic will produce Books like you have in FTM.
In Legacy, You can insert blank pages into the book and later edit with a
Word Processor and fill in those pages.
You can also insert text pages as a chapter in your book (no graphics).

I have publish 4 books using Legacy and I am very happy with the detailed
formatting options and control of the output -- It has lots of options and
controls other programs do not have.

If you want to use your current book format, just stick with FTM

Good luck

Linda,

You can share events in Legacy so if your Battle of Cowpens event was
shared, it would report all the people it was shared with.
But I don't think that is what you are describing.
To add the pages you refer to, you'd have to add them in an RTF version of
the report.

You can change fonts and have different fonts for different elements BUT
you need to either use PDF or RTF to preserve them.

A plain text file (.txt) obviously has a font but just one.

Currently in the Publishing Centre you can add Chapters of Special text
but it is just text - no pics.

Take a look at the HELP. Search the Help Index for Publishing

The options for editing PDF files increase all the time. You used to have
to have the full Adobe PDF. There are alternatives now.

Legacy has great reporting options but ultimately, it's a family histo ry
database, not a fully fledged word processor.

Since Legacy 8 Deluxe is currently selling for $19.95 perhaps its worth
the investment. OR recover your Legacy 7. You can download it again (look for
a previous versions link on the Download page) and the sales staff at
Legacy would give you your Customer Code to unlock the deluxe features again if
you've lost that. There have been some change to reports between 7 and 8
but not substantial ones to do with the questions you are asking.

You can have Legacy 7 and 8 installed on a computer at the same time.
Legacy 7 installs to a different place. Do not install Legacy 7 into Program
files. Legacy 8 is installed into Program Files by default

I have several of these in my FTM book that are in the beginning of

as historic churches that many people in my tree went to and a page on
historic events such as "The Great Fire of Chicago" that I don't need
attached to any particular person but I need to put a picture (or two)

don't want to buy 8 Deluxe until I'm sure it's what I want. It seems
like in 7 if I used a text report I couldn't change the font, enlarge
fonts or change text alignment. Forgive me if I remembering wrong. But
can I do th ose things in 8?
I downloaded 8 free but much is disabled and I haven't had time to
examine everything that I'm curious about yet.
I know there are workarounds (creating blank pages, making pages in
another program) but I send this pdf book out often and I like it to
be current with any new information and I would like to just be able
to go to the book publishing and export to pdf and it be
complete...I'm not even sure how I'd add pages from another program
into a pdf that was created with Legacy :-)

No, it is the moderator's position to point it out.

I was merely saying that I was aware that the moderator might do so, and
debated withn myself before commenting on such a topic. I would be willing to
comment on the differences between Legacy and Rootsmagic as I have

2015-12-13 Thread johnbernacki1
Pictures can be inserted into Word documents where you can also annotate or
explain them. Therefore an option for books (including printed ones) appears to
be:

Use Legacy “Publish Centre” to organise chapters and use the “Place Holder”
option for Word documents which are to be inserted after saving the book as an
RTF, then as Word. The whole thing could then be saved as a PDF.

This would require more playing around but may produce a great result.

Linda,

You can share events in Legacy so if your Battle of Cowpens event was shared,
it would report all the people it was shared with.
But I don't think that is what you are describing.
To add the pages you refer to, you'd have to add them in an RTF version of the
report.

You can change fonts and have different fonts for different elements BUT you
need to either use PDF or RTF to preserve them.

A plain text file (.txt) obviously has a font but just one.

Currently in the Publishing Centre you can add Chapters of Special text but it
is just text - no pics.

Take a look at the HELP. Search the Help Index for Publishing

The options for editing PDF files increase all the time. You used to have to
have the full Adobe PDF. There are alternatives now.

Legacy has great reporting options but ultimately, it's a family histo ry
database, not a fully fledged word processor.

Since Legacy 8 Deluxe is currently selling for $19.95 perhaps its worth the
investment. OR recover your Legacy 7. You can download it again (look for a
previous versions link on the Download page) and the sales staff at Legacy
would give you your Customer Code to unlock the deluxe features again if you've
lost that. There have been some change to reports between 7 and 8 but not
substantial ones to do with the questions you are asking.

You can have Legacy 7 and 8 installed on a computer at the same time. Legacy 7
installs to a different place. Do not install Legacy 7 into Program files.
Legacy 8 is installed into Program Files by default

I downloaded 8 free but much is disabled and I haven't had time to

I have published 4 genealogy family hard cover books of over 300
pages each. I am currently in the process of publishing another
family book. When you get ready, I can send you information about how
I published my books with all the steps.

Here are some of the answers to your questions:

>>>1. Is there anything comparable to FTM's smart stories in Legacy?

*I don't know anything about smart stories in FTM - so cannot comment*

>>>2. In the text report can I insert pictures? If not is there a
report where I can basically type a few paragraphs of information
with at least some basic formatting options (font, font size, center
or left alignment) and also add a few photos that I can size/resize
as I want.

*You can attach one picture

Should not matter what word processor you use. If you save them as RTF
(Rich Text Format), then most major word processors can work with them.
Then, after you've modified it with your word processor, save it in your
word processor's native format (to save any special formatting & etc)
and print them to a PDF (or, if your word processor supports it, save it
to a PDF).

Looking at the sample from Linda, which is very nice, Legacy will also
allow you to add your own background to a chart or tree.

I created a dropline chart with a photo of each person, and used an old
sepia photo of the street the family lived in as a background.

When this was faded a little it looked really good and has wowed all the
rellies.

I found the charting chapter in the manual very helpful for this, and
creating other customised charts.

No, I am referring to the PDF copy of the Legacy Manual that I paid for with
the V8 upgrade.
You will see from the Legacy home page that one option is the V8 download only,
another is V8 + PDF Manual. I believe they are on special at the moment, but

Re: [LegacyUG] Trying to decide between Rootsmagic and Legacy 8 (or just stay with FTM for now)

2015-12-13 Thread Ana
I have used Legacy to produce several books which I published. I have
Legacy produce the report with all the facts & folks organized & I save it
as an .rtf document. This Legacy does very well! I like to personalize my
report.

Thus I can bring it up in word and adjust the wording & format to my
liking. I can insert other Legacy charts & reports, photographs, timeline
or history articles - anything that helps to outline the genealogy I am
projecting.

For myself, the Legacy Publishing Center tries too hard to be everything to
everybody & its reports become robotic and overly generic. That is just my
opinion & I respect that many folks love it.

I find (in my opinion) Roots Magic & other genealogy programs have the same
broad in content or stilted feel.
