The Location Report can include Notes (Options tab). Including pictures has been requested before and we're hoping that when things settle down, we'll be able to include those as well. I misspoke in my previous email. I thought location pictures could be included in the index but guess not. I would link a location picture to an associated event to include those in reports. Why not use the Media Gallery Clipboard ? That will copy the link for any file , picture or not , together with the Date , Caption and Notes. You can copy one or all the items from a gallery , or Copy Append , selecting items from different galleries. The paste function allows you to paste to Individual, Location , Source , Repository , in fact any Media Gallery. Right mouse click on the icon in the required gallery for the copy dropdown , select the copy option required , then go to the target gallery and right mouse click in a blank space and select the paste option. I do not have a Media Gallery. Although this list has been dominated by those who have the time, willingness to be gammatesters as Legacy 8 gets rid of its numerous bugs, there are many Legacy users who use earlier versions, even versions as far back as 4. I would hope that Legacy will continue to address the problems of version 7, especially since many of those were not fixed in version 8, and are, therefore, still needing to be addressed. What we are asking re pictures, is to be able to add info to the picture at the appropriate page, and have it carry over to the central area, be it called Picture Center or Media Gallery, or whatever. When we enter a location, individual, or event, that is when we enter the picture and info. One step, no copying. And then, in the central area, that info appears so that when we add the same picture to another location, individual, or event, we do not have to re-enter the info again. Simple, unconvoluted, no copying, no leaving the Location List, Individual Page, Marriage Page, etc., no having to use Media Gallery or Picture Center. Re: [LegacyUG] Attaching a picture
Hi all, The Picture Centre in Legacy 7 and 8 only handles graphics. True it is fairly good at remembering the captions etc you add to the picture. However if you move computer or folder and don't take the right piclist.dbm with you, you have lost them. It's not intended to be permanent. The Media Gallery handles all file types you might want to attach to something in Legacy. In Legacy 7 this was called the Picture Gallery for some time but Media Gallery in the latest builds. You can copy pictures from one Gallery to another or to another place in the same Gallery (from individual pic to event pic for example) When you copy and paste a pic, it takes the caption etc with it. Right click on a thumbnail in the gallery to initiate. Is Media handling perfect? No. But it's a lot better in Legacy 8. If you have added the caption, date and description to the Picture List tab, then when you attach the picture, it should be showing on the Attached Pics tab. You have to add it to the Picture List tab *before* attaching the picture. This sticks and goes along with attaching the picture every time it's not at all convuluted! I've just linked the same picture to several individuals and every time the caption, date and description was transferred to the Attached Pic and I was able to confirm that in the Media Gallery for the individuals. However... the data is stored in the PicList.dbm file which is in the folder where the picture is stored. If you move the picture or rename it, you will lose the data stored in that file. If you move all pics in that folder to a new folder, then you need to make sure you move the PicList.dbm file as well. If you move part of the pics, there's no way to take the dbm file along with it. It would not be convoluted if the info you add to a picture while editing the individual on the Individual page carried over to the Picture List. As it is now, you have to go to the Picture List itself to add the basic info to a picture. That means, you have to exit out of the individual, go to the Picture List, add the picture and info, then go back to the Individual/Event, and repeat this maneuver for each picture you add. That is convoluted. RE: [LegacyUG] Attaching a picture
In TNG when I load a picture with data in the IPTC fields (I use Irfanview to enter the data in the IPTC fields first) into TNG all the information is automatically pulled from the IPTC fields and displayed with the picture. In this picture for example http://bgibbard.ca/genealogy/showmedia.php?mediaID=4779 All the information shown in the grid below the picture was pulled automatically from the data stored inside the jpg itself. And if I change the data in the IPTC fields and refresh the page, the displayed data changes with it. Could something similar be done in Legacy? In that way even if the picture is moved the data is contained within it. RE: [LegacyUG] Attaching a picture
You can add the picture to persons and their events within the Picture Center. I've never had to leave Picture Center to go to an individual to add pictures. Generally I add all the information to the pictures first before attaching them to any people. In the Picture List, you will first have to browse to the folder where your pictures are located then attach them. Bill Boswell From: CE WOOD [mailto:wood...@msn.com] Sent: Monday, January 06, 2014 2:14 PM To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Attaching a picture It would not be convoluted if the info you add to a picture while editing the individual on the Individual page carried over to the Picture List.
Also, I have thousands of pictures for locations, which for me, includes abbeys, castles, churches, maps (used for old empires, battlefields), graveyards, etc. I attach those pictures in the Master Location list. I can't attach pictures to a location in Picture List, only to a person. If someone is buried in Tintern Abbey, I do not want a picture of Tintern Abbey attached to the individual; I want it attached to Tintern Abbey. Can't do that in Picture List. [LegacyUG] Attaching a picture
I'm curious to find ot why. If I go to Picture Centre and complete details on the picture of Caption/Date/Description. When I attach to any person from the Picture Centre the Caption/Date/Description all appear with the picture. But when I attach the same picture via the individual's information to for eg, an event or marriage picture or baptism picture, the Caption/Date/Description do not appear. As the 2nd method is a lot quicker/easier its natural to go this way, until I realise it is not the way to go. Why is it necessary to use the long way round ? Re: [LegacyUG] Attaching a picture
When you're in Picture Center, if you add the Caption Date and Description to the Picture List tab, then it will be automatically added when you link a picture. If it's added to the Attached Pics tab, then it applies only to that instance you're linking to. This is fully explained in the Help file for Picture Center. RE: [LegacyUG] Attaching a picture
She is wondering why the convoluted process. It is a major pain to have to jump through so many hoops when most pictures have the same caption, date, and description. Considering Legacy is based on Access, it is possible to allow the entry at the Individual/Event/whatever level to carry over to the Picture Center and ALSO have a way to add specific details to a specific use of that picture. Programmers can do it; it's just a matter of doing it CE From: she...@legacyfamilytree.com To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Attaching a picture Date: Sun, 5 Jan 2014 14:14:45 -0800 When you're in Picture Center, if you add the Caption Date and Description to the Picture List tab, then it will be automatically added when you link a picture.
