Re: [LegacyUG] Is it possible to make a marriage "Invisible?"

2020-10-07 Thread J M
Thank you Brian and Cathy. That's exactly what I have been doing with no
luck when clicking the box that says private. I was hoping that there was
an invisible box. When I run a report, it adds placeholders for the
individuals and I was hoping for nothing to appear spouse-wise for the
individual in the report.

I found if I tag everyone in the family tree and export it WITHOUT the
invisible individuals, then I can get what I need.

Thanks again for your help.

Cheers, Jon

2020-10-07 Thread Cathy Pinner
We could do with both Private and Invisible on the Marriage Information
screen.

Currently on that screen Private means Invisible.
Whether there are bugs in reports when it is used, I'm not sure.

Open the marriage and you will see a private check box you can use to
make the marriage private, does not seem to have an "invisible" option
but turn on private and see what happens in your reports and GEDCOM
exports. You may also have to experiment with the report and GEDCOM
export privacy settings as well

Hello everyone.

I hope this is a simple and quick question: is it possible to make a
marriage completely "Invisible?"

Right now I have the spouse of an individual marked as "invisible" but
they are still showing up as a marriage. I am hoping to be able to
keep the information of the individual part of the database, but when
printing report or sharing a gedcom file with family members, I am
hoping that there is no mention of the marriage.

Thanks, Jon

Open the marriage and you will see a private check box you can use to
make the marriage private, does not seem to have an "invisible" option
but turn on private and see what happens in your reports and GEDCOM
exports. You may also have to experiment with the report and GEDCOM

Thank you Cathy, you saved me yet again. You way you explained it made me
realize that I should click on the parts of the screen while the pink box first
opens. I had been making the mistake of thinking that I had to change the
background colours after selecting one of the links/options within the pink
box.

John,

Options - Change Colours gets you to the full Colour Change screen. It opens a
pink box. When that is open you can click on all parts of the screen and choose
different colours. Note some areas you may want to change don't have a fairly
small area to click without bringing up the colour change options for something
else entirely. eg the background - you may actually click on one of the hidden
quick navigation panes next to the name boxes.

For some things you need to go to the link for other user-interface colours OR
go straight there in Options - Customise 9.2

When you have the colours as you like, make sure you save them for future use
with your own distinctive name. Then you can just choose your own colour scheme
again if you have to reset your settings to Legacy defaults. I add my initials
to any colour scheme I create to make them easy to spot in the list.
Saved colour schemes are at ...\Documents\Legacy Family
Tree\_AppData\ColorSchemes\ folder
For extra safety backup this folder or your own colour schemes files to your
off computer backup.

I had a bug and in process of fixing it, the person from Legacy Technical
Support told me to delete the usr file. This solved the problem but it also
deleted all of my customised settings including background colours.

I cannot find a way to get the Family View or Pedigree View background
colours back to how they were. All of the available colour schemes are
basically gradient except Vintage. I do not like gradient because I have a
visual impairment. Vintage however seems to only have one colour scheme which
is too bright and I cannot find a way to change its colours. I have tried
options in the user-interface colours but nothing changes the colour of the
background around the field boxes in Family View and Pedigree View.

From my memory of when I set the colours many years ago, I used Vintage and
changed the background colour, so I believe it can be done somehow.

Hello everyone,

I recently tried to create a PDF of my possible problem
list so I could review it and correct any errors regarding my genealogy.

When doing this I came up with a report that has 1843 pages. On each page it
has either one word or one sentence.

Am I somehow not correctly adjusting my settings so that I will have my report
show up properly?

I look forward to everyone's possible suggestions as to how I can correct this?

I should also say I'm still using the 7.5 version of Legacy.

Thanks to everyone!

Click the RESET ALL button at the bottom right corner of the Potential Problems
window. This will set everything back to the defaults including your page
setup in case something got messed up there. You will have to go back in and

Since Legacy only issues a system call to Windows to open the default
browser and passes a URL to visit as part of that call there should be
no problem with any browser.

I use Firefox and all those places where Legacy uses an external browser
(which is not the Legacy Home Tab so opening a link there will always
use IE) the link is opened in Firefox.

Links through the Legacy Home tab will default to IE if it doesn't run
in the Legacy browser. Legacy uses low-level IE functions for links
in the Legacy Home tab.

You can change default browser in Legacy in Options Customize

Re: [LegacyUG] Is it possible to switch from IE to Firefox?

2014-01-06 Thread grayscot2

Does Legacy 8 have any problem with using Chrome or Opera 12.16 as
default browsers?

Links through the Legacy Home tab will default to IE if it doesn't run
in the Legacy browser. Legacy uses low-level IE functions for links
in the Legacy Home tab.

You can change default browser in Legacy in Options Customize
Launch, but that doesn't affect the Legacy Home tab.

Re: [LegacyUG] Is it possible to switch from IE to Firefox?

2014-01-06 Thread Wendy Howard
You don't have to watch the webinar through your Legacy program.

You could, in Firefox, go to the webinars page
(http://www.familytreewebinars.com/) and watch the video there.

The same goes for any other link in the Legacy News section of the
Legacy Home tab - you can right-click on the link, select Copy
shortcut, then switch to your preferred browser and paste (Ctrl-V or
right-click Paste) the URL to the address bar there. Then press Enter
or click on the icon/button that makes it fetch that page.

You get much the same news items by subscribing to the Legacy News
newsletter (subscribe at http://legacyfamilytree.com/LegacyLists.asp),
and clicking on links in those emails will see the page opened in your
default browser. The exact content and timing is possibly different - I
don't normally pay any attention to the news in the Home tab so can't
say on that, but I do get the email newsletter and follow Legacy on
Facebook. Having so many options (just like the program!) means we can
all pick and choose what suits us.

Hope this helps. :-)

Michele,

I thought this was addressed in the last few days where someone from Legacy
support did say that it’s possible to download an older version, and providing
that you have a backup from that previous version, you could restore and
continue to use the older version. It was in the context of ‘what happens if
the latest update (Aug 13) which does a file conversion somehow corrupts the
file’. Not exactly your situation as your converted working file seems fine.

I can’t find it in the archives but will continue looking.

That’s okay. It will be too much of a risk because not only would I have to

Tech support worked on it for quite a while yesterday and they can’t figure it
out. In a nut shell, my main file is okay. However, if I try to export,
whether to another Legacy file or a GEDCOM, the resulting file is corrupt. I
get an error 3021 if I try and use the clipboard to copy an event. It doesn’t
matter what I tell the program to export or not export. It gets even better…
If I try and open the exported GEDCOM using RootsMagic, the RM file then has an
error. I can see the list of names on the left side but if I click on anyone
nothing happens at all.

This is definitely an exporting issue because my main file remains perfectly
okay. I can copy and paste events to my heart’s content. The problem I am
having is that I have lost 2 full days of work and I am working on a project
with a deadline. If I can’t get this resolved, I am going to have to switch
over to RootsMagic for this project which I do not want to do. I am just not
familiar enough with RM and that means I will be going very S L O W.

Michelle,

I am pretty sure that I have the set up file for the release prior to the
current update.

Yes, you would need to uninstall and reinstall and restore the old backup, but
that should not be a problem if you still have it.

BTW, Paul I see that you asked for back LegacyFS, not LUG posts. Sorry.

Also look on the main GEDCOM export screen. There is a check box there
to override source options - Include all source information. Make sure
that box is not checked. By default it has a check and all sources are

Subject: [LegacyUG] Is this possible?

I want to export individuals to a new family file. I want to export these
individuals WITHOUT any attached sources. When I try and do the export, I
don’t see anything that I can check/uncheck to export everything but the
sources.

Re: [LegacyUG] Is it possible to link one event to multiple persons?

2012-12-25 Thread Cathy-0
When you create an event the first time including source citation, then look on
the right-hand side of the event window under the Help button. You should see
two icons. Click on the left icon which will copy the entire event including
sources.

When you open a new event for the next person, then click on the right icon in
the empty window to past the previous event which you copied into the person’s
event. Then save.

Give it a try.

I want to be able to create a single event -- a specific residence at a
particular time -- and then link that residence event to multiple persons, such
as each member of a family. Is it possible to do this? What I have been doing
up to now is to add the event in each person's information page, and repeating
this process for each person. It's getting tedious! For example, for a family
with ten members, I have to add the same residence event ten times, once for
each member. There's got to be a better way to do this! FYI, I am using
Legacy version 7.0.0.109.

Thanks!

That would be called “Search and Replace”. Use this feature to update your
event depending on what part of the event you might be updating. Just click on
“Search” and then “Search and Replace” then select the appropriate parameter

Re: [LegacyUG] Digest mode possible?

2010-01-07 Thread marilyn E B
I know this is more about Gmail than Legacy; however, there is away to tell
when messages have been added to a thread. That is as long as you read your
messages on site. You will see the name of the next sender in bold type and
the other couple of senders show in a faded looking color.

One could just open a Gmail account for Legacy. Even with that it might be
wise to create a label/folder to send the ones you have already read. They
will come back to unread when a new message is added.

If anyone wants more help with Gmail you can send me a question at:
marily...@gmail.com

Wendy wrote:
What is missing from those instructions is Gmail on the web. Gmail has
filters, but it doesn't have folders. Instead, it uses labels. You
could set a filter to give the list mail its own label, and perhaps to
archive the mail straight away so it is removed from your Inbox. Then
you'd have to go to that label to find the list mail, and perhaps use a
star to mark the last thread you read, but I can see there might be
problems with that if there was another post to the same thread later
on. I haven't worked that one out, as I don't normally read my Gmail on
the web, but others may be able to chime in with what they do with their
Gmail mail box.

Can't a Create Rule be created at LUG Central so when an e-mail has the word

Even though Legacy gets dozens (maybe more than dozens) of requests for a

most of the email responses seem to want to convince us that this mode is the

RE: [LegacyUG] Digest mode possible?

2010-01-06 Thread BOB CUNNINGHAM
Isn't about time that the list administrator stepped in, gave Legacy's views
and stopped this everlasting and ongoing thread. This thread comes surfaces
every couple of months and their should be one reply from the administrator,
informing the person to check the archives.

Back to the Archives to learn about legacy and not this list

Well said, Mike. IMHO, if Millennia
tried to implement the variety of needs,
and requests of thousands of users, the program would
 eventually become so
convoluted and cumbersome that nobody would be able to use
 it.

We were all Newbies at one point, as we learned and made
 mistakes someone
on the list would set us straight. If not from the list,
 Sherry or one of
the other list monitors would step in. So rather than
 complaining we should
all thank Sherry, and the other list monitors for their
 religious efforts in
keeping us straight, and drop the dead end subject of
 Digest Mode.

But why? There are no good reasons (other than laziness and

It's not going to save on bandwidth - you still get the

Even though Legacy gets dozens (maybe more than dozens) of
requests for a Digest Mode, it falls to a deaf ear. No matter how
many people request it, most of the email responses seem to
want to convince us that this mode is the only good mode, no
  matter what.
This mailing list is not a democracy, it is a FREE service provided by
the people who provide Legacy.  No-one is forcing you to use this forum;
if you don't like it, you are welcome to go elsewhere. :-)

You may like to consider these -
http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/other/Software/LEGACY.html ,
http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/other/Software/AUS-LEGACY.html
, http://boards.rootsweb.com/topics.software.legacy/mb.ashx or
http://www.genealogywise.com/group/legacyfamilytreefans

Without going back through the recent mail, I can't recall anyone
providing clear directions for managing the Inbox, so that those who
don't know any different and think that digests are the best thing for
mailing lists can learn new ways to be happy with what they've got.

All email programs (as far as I'm aware) have rules or filters - the
name varies depending on the program, but you'll find information in
your email program's Help files about them. You can make a filter to
identify the incoming list mail and divert it to its own folder. This
keeps it separate from your personal mail, away from everything else so
that you can concentrate on it when you wish, and ignore it when you
need or want to do that.

Web-based email services *usually* have a similar facility, or some
other way to manage the mail to identify and separate out the mailing
list mail.

I have some instructions on my personal web site that I wrote a long
time ago for another mailing list that I help to administer. They can
be adapted to any mailing list, by changing the email address. They're
at
http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wendyh65/How-to.htm#RuleFilter
(this is a new location since I last posted on this topic, BTW).

It has been *years* since I wrote that page, and things may have changed
a little since then. But there should be enough there for someone to
work out how to set a filter in their own mail box. Don't forget to
check the Help files of whatever program or service you're using if you
need more assistance.

Filters are very effective tools and can do a lot more than move around
incoming mail. Every mailing list I subscribe to has a filter set to
divert that mail away from my Inbox. Other filters colour particular
(non-mailing list) emails so I can see at a glance that it was sent to
another address that I monitor, or forward copies to others
automatically, and so on.

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy Howard

This isdirected actually to the crew at Legacy. Since we don't have digest
available anyway, could you put in the 'guidelines' a note that about that,
which would tell future newbies the facts. I don't care about digest, but this
might cut down on the (reasonably) continuous requests for this. Not to cause

Re: [LegacyUG] Digest mode possible?

2010-01-05 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
No wonder I never saw it. When I subscribed in L5, there was bofh fypes of
servers, but I was glad when need removed the choice. People were responding to
my 'one message' within the digest, sometimes including 5-10 copies of the
whole digest (including 200+ messages), and I was on dial up. The newbies may
not know that this is the only mention about no digest? My suggestion is that
in the 'Legacy User Group guidelines:'  include a note saying that fact.

the one you have about including digest not available where you have to

I have been here five years and it shows no sign of diminishing. In fact it is
on the rise. I welcome Newbies, but as the name implies, each of them must
learn how this program works, and its support tools in trial and error method,
themselves. I would not know how to direct all digest questions (only) to a
person, to avoid sending it to the list, nor would I take the job.
