The Legacy staff always clearly identifies themselves...

I worked for Legacy for 14 years and led a Legacy SIG for our local
genealogy society for 10 years and can get into the "support mode"
when answering questions on the list .

Sherry,

CyberCyberActiveX and Hexagora are two companies that have software that
would fix this problem without a rewrite of Legacy. Hexagora states:

"The Unicode Library for VB6 is a robust and lightweight API driven ActiveX
component that will permit you to turn your VB6 programs into fully Unicode
(UTF16) applications. Using this complete set of usercontrols and classes
you'll be able to modernize the look of your programs permitting them
to use Unicode data and files."

Have

your programmers looked into using this?

Gene,

I use other Western European letters

with a superscript to a note. For example:

Maĉisak is instead written Mac²isak with the following note:

† "c²" represents a c with the circumflex diacritic.

Gene,

Legacy doesn't support non-Western European fonts. I don't know when
the programmers will be able to reprogram Legacy in a programming
language that supports those fonts. I know it's been a popular request
probably since the program was first released.

The only workaround is to use the closest English equivalent.

In Dutch the ij isn't a special character you just type the i and the j.
It's a long time ago I have seen a Dutch keyboard with a separate letter
ij. Most Dutch use the English International keyboard.

Re: [LegacyUG] Special characters in surnames.

2016-12-23 Thread CE WOOD
Press F6. That will bring up the Character map. It does not include many of the
characters we need, but it has the complete list of all the ones that Legacy
supports...until they accommodate the world.

When you have the Character Map visible, double click on the character you
want. That will put it into the "Characters to Return" box at the top of the
page. Then click "Return Characters" to the right of that box, and your choice
will be inserted wherever your cursor was in your sentence.

If you are going to use the character more than once, you may want to copy it
somewhere (Notepad, Word, an email, anywhere from which you can then simply
copy and paste it again instead of returning to Character Map and duplicate the
whole procedure.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Special characters in Event Notes

It seems that I can add all sorts of "special" characters to Event Notes,
which is very useful when one is often wanted to quote from foreign language
or historical publications. But I also often quote from newspaper articles
and advertisements which frequently incorporate an em-dash (alt+0151) and
although this will appear correctly in the first instance (whether adding
from the Special Characters ribbon or pasting OCR text) as soon as the Event
is saved it reverts to '97 and appears thus in Reports.

Must I resign myself to changing all em-dashes to en-dashes?

(Font used is Arial.)

Re: [LegacyUG] Special characters

2014-07-09 Thread Ron Taylor
I assume you already tried changing the 8 characters that can show in the
ribbon from the selection of special characters.  If the characters you need
are not in the table, then Millennia support should get involved.  It may
require a different code set.  Be sure to check HelpSearchCharacter Map.  The
character sets that Legacy claims to handle for import of GEDCOM files are
ANSI, ANSEL, and UTF-8.  Try to determine what character set you may require
for your Czech data and provide that to support.

UTF-8,UTF-16, Unicode characters have been possible for 5-6 years via 3rd
party Libraries used with Visual Basic 6.

Legacy 7 and Legacy 8 both could have supported UTF-8 with these libraries.

Some 3rd product libraries and there are others:

http://www.cyberactivex.com/unicodetutorialvb.htm

http://www.hexagora.com/en_dw_unictrl.asp

Unicode would allow you to documet ancestors with Cyrillic, Japanese,
Chinese, Hebrew and many other letters currently not supported.
Whether Legacy 9 departs from VB6 or not it should support Unicode, UTF-8
and UTF-16.
Do we know if this is part of the spec for Version 9?

How ridiculous that they could have solved this problem 5 or 6 years ago!

Anyone interested in having this common utility needs to deluge them with

Try using a Czech keyboard.

I switch to a Danish keyboard for about six characters, and back to English.
Just a quick mouse click to switch between keyboards after set up.

Note, doing this on Windows 7, not sure when this feature was first available.

Re: [LegacyUG] Special characters

2014-07-08 Thread johnbernacki1
I have been requesting more (Polish) special characters for a number of years
and was very surprised and disappointed that they apparently are not added to
Legacy 8. Legacy say that it would require major changes in their technology. I
do not understand computer technology but since there are already some special
characters in their special characters map, I do not understand why adding more
to the map would be so difficult.

Legacy software is from America, an extremely multicultural nation where many
have ancestors from Eastern Europe.

Accuracy is vital in genealogy, so to publish my family tree, I would have to
save it as a word document, do a lot of search and replace, then publish it as
a book.

I very much like Legacy in other ways.

It appears that you will be unable to do what you want because what you want to
do can only be achieved with Unicode. In Legacy I can only achieve the
diacritics as noted by the special characters on the special characters ribbon.

In Word 2007 however, I was able to achieve the long vowels that you mentioned

when you transfer data from Legacy to TNG, you are using GEDCOM, which is

Subject: [LegacyUG] Special characters

Legacy does a good job normally when I use letters with diacritical marks, as
found in languages other than English. However, it's special characters do not
include some characters found in the Irish language; e.g. ô, î, and â: i.e.
small letters o, i and a with a bar over the top, such as a long o, long i,
and long a that you would find in an English dictionary or pronunciation
guide.

I import my Legacy file into TNG. I can edit these words in TNG and the correct
characters, and TNG will display them properly. But when I try to copy and
paste the correct characters into Legacy, it changes the straight bar into a
small inverted vee. So when I import that file into TNG, it changes the
characters I entered directly into TNG.

Is the a way to work around this? I hope I have explained myself adequately.

Gene

Also true for a very a sizable chunk of Europe as well. We are hoping that

I suspect it can't be done, that you just need to find the Windows code (ALT +
something) and type this each time for these characters.

Thanks, Mike. I did do that first and it doesn't actually answer my

Re: [LegacyUG] Special Characters

2011-12-29 Thread Sherry/Support
Legacy can only support Western European fonts. If this character is not in
the Windows Character Map for Western European characters, then Legacy
can't use it.

Doing a little digging around, I found that some of the Hawaiian
characters are Unicode fonts, which Legacy doesn't support at this time,
but we do plan on porting Legacy over to a programming language which
supports thse fonts.

I don't know how soon this will be.

Sherry

I'm not sure there is a Windows ALT code for the kahako.

I've read the original query in a little more detail...

Unless the character you want is already in the basic, European character set
that lies behind the ribbon and that is used by Legacy, you're going to be out
of luck. As Sherry said, what you want is probably only available in a Unicode
font, and until Legacy is rewritten to use such a font you'll have to make do
with what ever is available in the basic Windows character set.

RE: [LegacyUG] Special Characters

2011-12-29 Thread Bernhard Scholz
Georgia,

this is not only your problem but one of Legacy.

There isn't a possibility to add any character to Legacy except to those you can
see in the

Options - Customise - Data Defaults - Quick Data Entry Ribbon

Like you and many others having ancestors in Europe and they can't use special
letters to write names correctly.
The problem is, that Legacy isn't using the so called UNICODE.

As I don't know how your letter looks like I can't say anything about if it's
possible to use that letter.

Even if Legacy would support UNICODE there is still the problem that the
character you need isn't supported.

Could you send an example of the letter you need as that would be a great help
to help you.

Bernhard,

Thank you for your thoughts. The letter is simply an a with an
overscore, also used in the Maori language. However, the name can still
be spelled with just an a. I actually have faith that Legacy will
eventually support Unicode. In the meantime, I have much work and
research to keep me from fretting about it.

Georgia - with thanks to all who responded
