Re: [LegacyUG] Focus Group

2014-08-31 Thread Jay Wilpolt
Pat,

The Gedcom that was created, would not have been a .fdb, it would end with
.ged.

The location to open files
for Legacy may not be the same as the location the gedcom was stored at.

And, you should probably create a gedcom for LEGACY rather than for Gedcom
5.5.1
The later restricts the data that is included to only that which meet 5.5.1
standards, whereas most other software that can import gedcoms, have ways
to deal with 'other' data, so that as much of your data gets 'out' into the
new file as possible.

Hope that helps,

Jay

It sounds like your focus group worked, but you forgot to Import (not Open) the
newly created .ged file into a Legacy family file. Yet you already had an empty
family file on your system, with the same name as the Gedcom file. You can
import into an existing family file or a new one. (One normally tests a Gedcom

Re: [LegacyUG] Focus Group

2014-08-31 Thread Ron Taylor
Focus Groups are very powerful. Paula basically pointed out that a new
individual added to the database will automatically be included. The reason is
that a Focus Group is not a collection of individuals or a tagged set of
records. It is a list of criteria that can be used to find records. The
criteria can be edited. If descendants of a specific individual are in the
Focus Group criteria and last month there were 3000 of them then you added a
new child for one of them, today the Focus Group would find 3001 descendants.
Same would be true for any other combination of criteria used in a Focus Group.

One way that I use Focus Group is to SearchFindMiscellaneousEdit Focus
GroupLoad then select one of the Focus Groups that I have saved and click OK
to retrieve individuals that meet the criteria. An example would be a Focus
Group that has several people and their ancestors to 10 generations. I execute
the Find, then set Tag1 for them. Next, I set Tag2 for the descendants of a
common ancestor. Finally, I find everyone with Tag1 and Tag2 which means they
are a descendant of the common ancestor and on the ascending line of those in
the Focus Group. I export those to a new Legacy database and use it to produce
a descendant chart showing how those people are related without all the other
connections they have in the main database.

Another idea is to have a Focus Group that is customized to find those
individuals that a particular collaborator is working on and name the Focus
Group accordingly so it is easy to use. I'm sure there are lots of other ways
to productively utilize Focus Groups.

Cathy,

I missed it because I was looking for what I was told to look for, namely
View/Set Focus Group.

However, now I have another problem.

Per your instructions, at step 3, I chose Edit Focus Group.

The Focus Group window can be reached from several locations.

1. From the Export window, I chose GEDCOM File

Produce file for GEDCOM 5.5.1 Only

Character Set: UTF-8 Then I clicked

[Step 1] Record Selection,

[Step 2] I chose Selected Records Contained in the Focus Group option, and
then clicked

[Step 3, per Cathys's instructions] Edit Focus Group which took me to
the

Focus Group window which had the words

Ancestors (Direct Line, 999 Gen., Mult. Parents) for Pauline Elizabeth
Layman [i.e., ,my, mother's ancestors] highlighted in blue. I clicked

OK

[which took me to a window entitled GEDCOM Record Selection I clicked
Close, which took me to a window entitled GEDCOM Export

I clicked on a button entitled Select File Name and Start EXPORT

which took me to a window called Export GEDCOM

file. In the Fie Name box I typed in LAYMAN-Pauline Elizabeth
Ancestors 20140830.ged and clicked Save.

This took me back to the GEDCOM Export Window

plus a smaller window which said Export Complete[:] Export of GEDCOM file
is complete[:] Indiviuals: 758[;] Families: 344. I clicked OK.

This took me back to the family screen of my startup family in my main
Legacy database file (PRICKETT-LAYMAN.fdb).

I clicked Open File. and chose
LAYMAN-Pauline Elizabeth Ancestors 20140830.fdb the type of which to my
surprise was labeled Legacy Genealogy Software and was only 1468kb in size.
However, when the file was opened, there was NO information on the Family View.
I clicked on View Name List. But there were NO names in the name list!!

So NOW what have I done wrong???

Thanks (again)!

Nobody seems to have answered this directly.

I think this mainly because using Focus Groups is not explained at all well in
the literature. For example (Jenny Benson's example actually).

From the Searches/Miscellaneous screen, you can apparently select a focus
group, but there is no telling which focus group you have selected! Neither does
the individual change. That's a gripe!

Having selected a Focus Group, I would expect that if I clicked on the Create
List button at the bottom of the window, I would be presented with a list of all
the people in that group. And it does. Just remember that whatever groups are
listed in the Focus Group window will form the basis of the list created. So,
make sure only one group is in that list of groups!

Having pressed Create List, you should now have a Search List of everyone in
that Focus Group. You can scroll up and down the list; sort the list and, print
it. Hint: use the PRINT button!

Re: [LegacyUG] Focus Group

2012-08-29 Thread Ron Ferguson
Pat,

ViewFocus Group, it initially opens at the Ancestor Options Screen, clicking
OK takes you to the Focus Group Screen, bottom tight is the Help Button. You
may have to Save first btw, I’m not certain.

The screen which you get using Jenny’s method is the Focus Group Screen, the
help Button is as described above. Whilst the left hand side of Help is the
index, and its last item is zoom, on the right is a page headed “Focus Groups”.
How to view is the last item.

Ron Jenny, thanks for your prompt replies.

However,

Ron, when I click the Family tab, then Help, then Index, the last item is
Zoom.. What IS the Family GROUP screen? (I also clicked View there is
nothing about a Family GROUP.) It seems to me a 'family is by definition a
group.

Jenny, I don't have a Miscellaneous Searches tab. If I click on
1) the Search Icon,
2)t hen on the Miscellaneous tab,
3) select the radio button for Focus Group,
4) click on the View/Select Focus Group button, I get a list of the Focus
Groups I have created, not a list of the individuals in the Focus Group -- and
I see no way to get that list.

I must be missing something!! Can you be more specific? Sorry to be such a
nitwit!!

The problem may lie with the end of Step 4, Saving your selection. Do you
give a NAME to the selection that you want to save? If you don't name it you
cannot Load that named selection when you are setting up the Gedcom.

First of all the Load button is only to call up Focus Groups you have already
saved.

To create a new Focus Group for an entire family line, click on Add an
Individual and Entire Family Line. Then from the list that appears, select the
individual of interest and click on the Select button. Use the Save button
to five a name to this Focus Group. Then you should be able to go back later
and export this group in GEDCOM file.

I did all that. I click Save and I click Load and absolutely
nothing happens. Then when I try to export to Gedcom, it says folder
is empty when I select Focus Group.

First of all the Load button is only to call up Focus Groups you have
 already saved.

To create a new Focus Group for an entire family line, click on Add an
Individual and Entire Family Line. Then from the list that appears, select
the individual of interest and click on the Select button. Use the Save
button to five a name to this Focus Group. Then you should be able to go back
later and export this group in GEDCOM file.

I am totally washing out with trying to develop a Focus Group.  When
I go to Focus Group on the View menu, I get a box that allows me to
choose the individual or family line that I wish to use for it.  I
choose the individual and pick the Individual and Family Line and
click Load.  Nothing happens.  Then I try clicking Save and still
nothing.  When I try to export to a gedcom it says the folder is
 empty.

 What can I be missing?

Viewing a Focus Group only brings up a DESCRIPTION of the current Focus
Group. Loading loads a DESCRIPTION of a saved Focus Group from disk.
Saving writes a DESCRIPTION of the current Focus Group to Disk.

What were you expecting to happen?

From a later post, it appears you are trying to use a Focus Group for a
GEDCOM Export. If so, forget the View menu. Just go to Export to GEDCOM
File and click on Record Selection. Then click the Selected records
contained in Focus Group radio button, then click the View/Select
Focus Group button. When you get the Focus Group dialog, create the
Focus Group you want -or- Load one from disk. When you are finished,
just click the OK button. The GEDCOM Export is now going to be
restricted to the Focus Group you have told it to use.
