Sherry, sorry I had not seen the program on the website before, but very good to know that you do. I did go look again and found it under software not under the add-ons. Would it be possible to put it under the add ons as well? Also under software is books the calender and other CD's, not were one would usually look for such items. You have so many great products that I would hate for people to miss them because they are not in a category one would think they are under. Brenda, Add-on programs are those which accept the Legacy Family File directly. Ani-Map doesn't work with Family Files or gedcoms, so it's technically nto an Add-On. Thanks for using Legacy. Re: [LegacyUG] location name changes
The problem with using the place name from the time period the event occurred is that, without the same amount of work we did to find the name, other researchers will have a more difficult time working back up the name trail to find out where the records of the event may be held. I try to use the original place name with the evolution of names in the event notes. I have ancestors from Alsace-Lorraine too and not only did the country change over time, the city and township names changed too. I think it is important to document the entire evolution. Isn't that why we document our sources? If you find the evidence and document it, then other researchers would have that information. I can see placing the evolution of the place in the notes if the event hasn't been proven. RE: [LegacyUG] location name changes
I decided to use modern names in the Birth, Death, Event, etc. Place fields, but then I use Legacy as a database to organize knowledge, documentation, and sources, not as a software equivalent of historical reenactment. Filling such key data fields with stuff that no longer exists makes research harder, as records mostly reside in the modern versions of place. Everyone knows that counties and territories subdivided; defunct geographies, orthographies, entities, are assumed. If antequated names are relevant, I put them in any of the many fields that hold explanatory notes. One often needs to know the history of place to interpret a record, but I'd rather optimize the data to interact with modern-day life (on line databases, GIS) than recapitulating the past. Re: [LegacyUG] location name changes
I agree with Jonathan's approach. Why make life more difficult? I use parenthesis to reflect the original such as Lawrenceville (was Maidenhead), Mercer County, New Jersey. If the county is different I do the same there - Monmouth County (now Mercer County ) or the like. If necessary additional data (such as dates, etc.) can go into events or notes. I have found that the great majority of the people who peruse my info are not into genealogy as such but just generally interested in the family. Using the contemporary location as the primary is something they can relate to - will tell you very quickly that you have the wrong community in the wrong county, etc. You must then explain to the elderly great aunt what it is all about and this she will (sometimes intentionally), not understand - many just find it confusing and simply loose interest. I prefer to be practical about these things, not technically correct. The technically correct will still have the info and can change to whatever they feel is proper - makes no nevermind to me. RE: [LegacyUG] location name changes
Using the modern address can create a real problem for researchers when trying to locate documents. My ancestors settled in what is now Hopewell Twp., Mercer, New Jersey. They arrive in that area in about 1680 and the area was called West Jersey. In 1710 it became part of Burlington, in 1714 it became part of Hunterdon County, in 1839 was assigned to Mercer County, in 1844 was re-assigned to Hunterdon, and from 1845 until this day was part of Mercer County. When searching for your ancestor's records you need to search the jurisdiction where the records were created. If I had only look for records in Mercer County, I would have lost 159 years of possible records. So, I always list the place name and jurisdiction of where event occurred at the time. RE: [LegacyUG] location name changes
Mary: The rule is to list the location as it was at the time, which does result in the variations you described. I've always been bothered, for example, by files that show pre-1776 American dates with locations as USA. That said, I have ancestors from small European villages in principalities with names that no one would recognize, or in principalities that I can't accurately determine. My solution is to show Village Name, , now Germany--since Germany didn't exist at the date of the event. I'd be curious about the reaction of others to this method. Kirsten Bowman -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of M. More precisely, those that have changed from one county to another or from one country to another. I would assume that you would list a town as it was at the time of the event. For example, a town in Lorraine went from Lorraine to France to Prussia to Germany to France and finally back to Germany. If an ancestor was born there in 1811, it was part of France at that time. But if a brother was born there in 1816, it was part of Prussia. In this case, I would have 2 entries in the Location list for the same town - 1 for France and 1 for Prussia. Does everyone agree with me on this? Mary Enter the drawing for a FREE Legacy Cruise to Alaska or a FREE research trip to Salt Lake's Family History Library. Open to users of Legacy 6 Deluxe.
