[Libertarian] Re: American Legion votes to abolish First Amendment
Okay, I read the article. I too, am a long-standing member of the American Legion. I didn't see anything in the article that indicated that the American Legion was calling for infringements on American's rights to freedom of speech. They urged fellow Americans, to protest in other ways, but nothing about legislation to outlaw such activities. Overall, I'd have to say, as an American Legion Member, I agree with their stance. There's nothing in the article to indicate that the American Legion supports legislative moves to outlaw freedom of speech. Re: [Libertarian] Re: American Legion votes to abolish First Amendment
They are equating anti-war, First Amendment protected speech with providing comfort and aid to the enemy. This is an attempt to outlaw freedom of speech via serious false accusations that can land someone in jail. Quite frankly, you previously referred to Bush as an extreme libertarian in this very forum. The fact that you agree with this anti-liberty position and attempt to suppress the First Amendment by labeling those in disagreement as aiding the enemy is not surprising. Ahem, no one who believes that Bush is an extreme libertarian and who also believes that beating someone to death in the street for burning a flag doesn't violate their First Amendment rights could be expected to be a rational individual. __ James Landrith [EMAIL PROTECTED] cell: 703-593-2065 * fax: 760-875-8547 AIM: jlnales * ICQ: 148600159 MSN and Yahoo! Re: [Libertarian] Re: American Legion votes to abolish First Amendment
Quote from the article: ...the group's national commander called for an end to all 'public protests' and 'media events' against the war, even though they are protected by the Bill of Rights. Does it mean he's OK with public demonstrations in favor of the war? It looks like it. When they say that The delegates voted to use whatever means necessary to 'ensure the united backing of the American people to support our troops and the global war on terrorism.' it sounds like a gang of stormtroopers vowing to crack the skulls of those who oppose the government's wisdom. Using the phrase whatever means necessary can be scary. Again, live and let live. Those who want to protest against the war have every right to do so. If the media wants to cover those protests, it's their right to do so. If anyone has a problem with that, all they have to do is turn the radio or the TV off and get on with their lives. [Libertarian] Re: American Legion votes to abolish First Amendment
I will remain with the Legion myself, but having joined the Armed Forces to defend the Constitution and the People of our country, I can't say I agree totaly with the afore mentioned statements. Iraq is a complex issue, while I was against going to war with Iraq from the start, I am also against leaving Iraq before it is secure. I wasn't a veteran of Korea or Vietnam, so maybee it is harder for me to identify with many of the legion, but the manner in wich we left Iraq in the first gulf war was a mistake equally as great as declaring the second gold war. I would hate to see our country leave the Iraqi's yet again with unfilled promises and a dismal future. I would rather of not has us go there at all, but now that we have I belive we do have a responsibility to stay the course. Our troops need support, but not at the cost of the very things every member of the Legion swore at one time to protect. Protesters such as the mother that camped out at Bush's ranch are a nesecity, Bush is sheltered and rarely acknowledges consequences of his actions. If the country ops out of expressing those consequences to him, as his advisors aparently have, would he not be emboldened as it is feared the terrorists would be threw protest? I think they can put there Jane Fonda fears to rest, I have a strong feeling Osama and Zarqawi won't be embracing any Holywood Icons in the near future.
