Re: Error Start CUP service

2004-03-09 Thread Daniel Jarboe
Hi Mike,

I am attempting to define a printer to my system but when I start
to
define the printer I get an error telling me that the CUP service is
not
started. When I try to start the service I get the error
-/ect/init.d/cups
start returned 7 (Program not running.)
Starting cupsdcupsd: Child exited on signal 11! ... failed.

Does anything look interesting in your /var/log/cups/error_log? If you
don't see anything out of the ordinary, you might want to change the
loglevel in cupsd.conf to debug or maybe even debug2 and try again.
What changes have you made to your /etc/cups/cupsd.conf? These paths
may vary, but are usually pretty consistent. Signal 11 is a
segmentation fault, kind of like an OC4 abend.

Re: Using DCSS for extra memory

2004-03-09 Thread Carsten Otte
Many years ago, we created an application that would attach a R/W DCSS
to use for extra memory. As the demands for more memory increased,
subsequent DCSS space would be attached. We used to attach existing DCSS
space (such as VTAM) for testing (no, this would no trash the real VTAM
segment, we'd just ATTACH the DCSS in R/W mode, thus extending our
virtual
machine storage dynamically). I was wondering if Linux on 390 could be
taught how to do this. Can Linux on 390 handle holes in it's address
space?
Memory hotplug would be nice. I would prefer the #cp def store command to
change the storage size
as soon as Linooks supports memory hotplug/remove and as soon as VM folks
do fix the need to
clear the storage and reset CPU states on changing the storage size.
DCSS would be an alternate way, but in case you want that real flexible
(example in 1meg steps), you
would need a lot of DCSSes because those are so far not relocateable and
cannot be mapped multiple
times by the same guest. These restrictions make the DCSS extends memory
idea unattractive.

with kind regards

Re: Error Start CUP service

Mike,

What Linux distribution are you running? What is the output of uname -a
and rpm -qa | grep cups?

If you are still stuck after Daniel's suggestion, try the following simple
/etc/cups/cupsd.conf and let us know what happens:
DocumentRoot /usr/share/cups/doc/
LogLevel info
Port 631
Location /
Order Deny,Allow
Allow From 127.0.0.1
Allow From 127.0.0.2
/Location
Location /admin
AuthType Basic
AuthClass System
Order Deny,Allow
Allow From 127.0.0.1
/Location

I'm working on a redpaper, with Roy Costa of the ITSO, based on my Print
Serving SHARE presentation. It's about 90% ready. We try to document both
SLES-8 and RHEL-3. Mike, I took the liberty to send you one.

If anyone else would like to review this paper (828KB), send me an e-mail
off-line and I'll send you a PDF. I would appreciate some feedback.
Thanks.

Harry,

That's cool. I just hope you don't think this will help anyone actually
unsubscribe. :P I subscribe to a number of mailing lists that have the
unsubscribe instructions at the bottom of every email, and people still
don't seem to be able to figure it out.

I received a complaint about the list being SPAM because of not knowing

I have added a bottom banner with information about the list, which

I have telnet running under xinetd (SuSE SLES8 SP3).
However, after the first user or two is logged in,
subsequent logins get the message Connection closed
by foreign host. How do I get more users on with
telnet? Am I missing a config file for telnet? Is PAM
getting in the way?

(Yes, I know they should use ssh, but there are some
technical reasons why they cannot).

Well it looks like my wildest dreams and deepest fears are coming true this week... and I need some input

2004-03-09 Thread James Melin
I think we are finally going to go ahead with serious penguin power.

I am going to a meeting shortly at which we will discuss a rather broad
agenda item:

estimate a time line for the installation and implementation of z/VM, Linux
guests, DB2 Connect or Neon JDBC driver, WebSphere Application Server, RACF
support for Linux admin IDs and Websphere user IDs, LPARs on the z800, disk
space and disk backup

If anyone has any input to this, please feel free to touch on any of these
things. I dont expec an answer by the time I hit the meeting but if I have
some experienecs on people going from a couple of LPARS to whole hog into
VM, that would be helpful. Pitfalls, etc, and things like that.

I have been the sole support/clueless idiot wandering in the wasteland for
z/Linux here for almost 4 years. Playing without a net, and learning as I
go. Finally I have an opportunity to get the rest of the z/os team on board
to this operating system. Once they learn to speak penguin, I think their
exceptional skills will be nothing short of empowering for us all.

Any experiences, pitfalls that befell you, and cautionary tales are
welcome.

Thanks

Excellent! I hope congratulations aren't premature. At this point
compatibility is really a non issue, pretty much any thing you want to
do can be done (of course within reason). You really want to pay
attention to performance topics. There are lots of performance
documentation available and SHARE and the upcoming WAVV conference will
get into it was well.

Best of luck in your meeting. Now that you've set the stage, we're all
waiting for the answer... :)
