Documentation for Linux on System z, up to kernel 3.7, on developerWorks
Early this year we migrated the Linux on System z developerWorks pages to fit a new IBM web template. Since then we have only released a few updates. Today we are releasing documentation for Linux on System z for up to kernel 3.7. Please refer to: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/linux390/whatsnew.html For the latest set of documentation (matching kernel 3.7) see: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/linux390/development_documentation.html We have also introduced a new Documentation-archive, showing the Development stream documentation-sets for kernels 3.x: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/linux390/development_docu_rollback.html Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year * end of message Mit freundlichen Grüßen / Kind regards Gerhard Hiller see our TechOps homepage. I’m getting 404 on the development_documentation.html and development_docu_rollback.html Somehow the URL in the email is getting chopped after the word development. Use copy/paste to get it to show up. Re: VDISK on the fly
SWAPGEN is a CMS application, so you can't use it when Linux is running, however, you can temporarily define and format a new VDISK with DEFINE (via vmcp) and the Linux commands, add it to fstab, and then update the PROFILE EXEC to add the SWAPGEN line to define the temporary addition as a permanent addition next time you IPL the virtual machine. Is there a way to expand the swapgen vdisk swap without reboot the server or define a new vdisk using swapgen without ipl? The server is SLES 10SP2. -- For LINUX-390 subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to lists...@vm.marist.edu with the message: INFO LINUX-390 or visit http://www.marist.edu/htbin/wlvindex?LINUX-390 -- For more information on Linux on System z, visit http://wiki.linuxvm.org/
Re: Documentation for Linux on System z, up to kernel 3.7, on developerWorks
The documents are found within the whatsnew.html page. Of particular interest: The storage-class memory device driver provides support of Flash Express. The Flash Express memory is accessed as storage-class memory increments through extended asynchronous data mover (EADM) subchannels. Each increment is represented in Linux by a block device. -- For LINUX-390 subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to lists...@vm.marist.edu with the message: INFO LINUX-390 or visit http://www.marist.edu/htbin/wlvindex?LINUX-390 -- For more information on Linux on System z, visit http://wiki.linuxvm.org/

Re: VDISK on the fly
Not to worry. Adding more swap space is easy. On Thu, Dec 20, 2012 at 12:30 PM, Victor Echavarry Diaz vechava...@evertecinc.com wrote: Is there a way to expand the swapgen vdisk swap without reboot the server or define a new vdisk using swapgen without ipl? Expand it? No. But the norm (for Linux on any HW) is to add more swap volumes, not enlarge them. This can be done on-the-fly. Remember to make it permanent ... if the need is expected to persist. (Or remember to enlarge what you run through SWAPGEN.) For VDISK, create another with 'vmcp define', then bring it online with 'chccwdev -e', then 'mkswap' against the new device, and then 'swapon' that same device. This is not permanent. If you are in a crisis (any HW), you can use a file for swap. Again 'mkswap' and then 'swapon'. Re: A call to chair
Hi All, First I would like to wish everyone a Happy Holiday. Now just in case you did notice it is the time of year again. Yes SHARE is right around the corner and it is time for a call for CHAIRS. Below is definition of what is SHARE and the list of sessions. If you would like to chair a session please send me an e - mail with the session id, session name and your e - mail address. SHARE this February is in San Francisco and volunteers are needed. History In 1955, just two years after the release of IBM's first computer, a handful of the earliest IT professionals collaborated to form SHARE. Thus came into being the world's first organization of computing professionals. Over the past five decades, SHARE has become synonymous with high-quality, user-driven education and resources to make enterprise computing specialists more effective professionals. SHARE serves more than 20,000 individuals representing over 2,000 of IBM's top enterprise computing customers. Our constituency includes many of the top international corporations (including the majority of the FORTUNE 500), universities and colleges, municipal through federal government organizations, and industry-leading consultants. While independent, SHARE maintains a close partnership with IBM and its subsidiaries, as well as with leading solution providers to continually strengthen SHARE's benefits for its members. Our Mission To enable people in Information Technology environments to achieve business results. Our Vision We will be an indispensable partner with our members and IBM - the community where users and technology meet to shape the future of Information Technology. The Value of SHARE Membership Participation in SHARE provides the opportunity to build relationships with a diverse community of IT professionals, enhances your professional development, and positions you as a thought leader in the industry Sessions IDSession Day DateSpeaker 12315 Linux for Beginners Hands-on Lab Part 1 of 3 Mon 2013-02-04, 09:30:00Neale Ferguson 12364 Current Future Features SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for System z Mon 2013-02-04, 09:30:00Marcus Kraft 12350 Linux for Beginners Hands-on Lab Part 2 of 3 Mon 2013-02-04, 11:00:00Neale Ferguson 12488 z/VM Platform Update Mon 2013-02-04, 11:00:00Alan Altmark 12655 Introduction to Managing Mobile Devices using Linux for System z Mon 2013-02-04, 11:00:00Bruce Armstrong 12351 Linux for Beginners Hands-on Lab Part 3 of 3 Mon 2013-02-04, 12:15:00Neale Ferguson 12459 Automation Scenarios for a z/VM Cluster and Linux on System z Guests Mon 2013-02-04, 13:30:00Tracy Dean 12462 Configuration and Use of z/VM Dirmaint and SMAPI Mon 2013-02-04, 13:30:00Rich Smrcina 12923 Two Years with z/VM and Linux on System z Mon 2013-02-04, 13:30:00Richard S.
