Re: Invalid request received from you

2002-06-07 Thread Jim Elliott

My friend is trying to subscribe to this list. Here is the original
request as well as the response. Has something changed since I signed
 up.

Peter: Have your friend send a PLAIN TEXT message, not an HTML message.
It is generally considered bad manners to send HTML to a list in
general, and I am pretty sure the server won't understand commands in
HTML!

Regards, Jim

Peter,

I don't know. It may or may not have something to do with him sending mail
in HTML format? In any case, I usually tell people to go to
http://www.marist.edu/htbin/wlvindex?linux-390
http://www.marist.edu/htbin/wlvindex?linux-390 to subscribe to the list.
Just scroll all the way to the bottom.

Your message is being returned to you unprocessed because no command was
found
in the message body. LISTSERV expects commands in the body of the
message,
rather than in the message subject, because some users have no control over
the
contents of the Subject: field on outgoing messages.

Good. Send the command to the robot. That is correct.

Good. The syntax is correct too.

Question:
Was the note sent as plain text?
If it was, for example, HTML, that will throw LISTSERV off.
