Re: Using Samba 2.2.4-copy function

2002-06-09 Thread Post, Mark K

Peter,

No, this isn't the same problem that other people are experiencing. They
get a kernel oops and the entire system crashes. This is some kind of
performance problem that may be affecting the entire system, but not causing
a crash, per se. You'll need to gather some diagnostic information from the
HMC. Perhaps a dmesg command to see if anything in the kernel ring buffer
can tell you anything, or look in /var/log/messages, or the Samba logs
themselves. You might consider setting your Samba log level to 2.

With each copy of Samba, there is included the entire text of the O'Reilly
and Associates Using Samba book. They have a number of performance tips
in there that might help.

I also see this problem. When I use Microsoft Explorer to copy many files,
the Linux system seems to hang. I get response from the HMC console but
cannot get new SSH sessions. Users get extremely slow if any response. I
have to reboot. Obviously we do not have this in production.

I am using the beta SuSE kernel 2.4.7 and Samba 2.2.0a. Is this a SuSE
problem or a Samba problem? We are just testing Linux and are not
currently paying for support. Is there a patch I can apply or am I caught
in a catch-22?

Thanks for any response.

This is a kernel bug. SuSE issued a replacement kernel to correct it.

Are there any known problems with copying files using windows explore?
Any time we use this function it causes our Linux machine to crash.
We need the copy function for our Windows and DOS apps.
When we use FTP to move file it works okay.
 TIA, Pam

Samba tickles a kernel problem that causes a crash. You will need a kernel
update. If you have the SuSE distribution (including updates) you can
download a new kernel and update it. I had that problem last week and the
new kernel took care of it.

Pam,

This sounds suspiciously like a known problem with Samba and the kernel.
Check out http://www.marist.edu/htbin/wlvtype?LINUX-VM.24614 The only
problem is, the version talked about there is 2.2.1a.
