A real X-Server would probably not be available for a 286 nowadays but ... Not strictly an X-Server but it you want an X-display on a 286 you're probably best with VNC from ORL (now ATT IIRC). The X-server proper runs on the main host and it uses the VNC client as a TCPIP connected smart graphics card and mouse driver. The VNC client is small enough to boot off a floppy complete with big linux kernel, I've never heard of an ELKS version (How's the TCPIP code doing nowadays?) but DOS 'doze-32 versions do exist. -- Rob. If someone is interested in purchasing it perhaps we could work something out. There are also versions of PC-Xview that run on 286. One under Windows 3.1 in standard mode, and one that runs under DOS. I seem to remember seeing several copies of each a Weird Stuff Warehouse (the hardware half, not the software half) a couple months ago. I think both of them as well as Microwindows (I don't have a link handy for it) are good candidates. I recall mention of DesqViewX allowing an X-server for a 286, but I can't say I've ever seen it. There are also versions of PC-Xview that run on 286. One under Windows 3.1 in standard mode, and one that runs under DOS. I seem to remember seeing several copies of each a Weird Stuff Warehouse (the hardware half, not the software half) a couple months ago. This is an old one, which after many, many postings about whether this is at all possible usually boils down to someone admitting [s]he has an old commercial X11 or X10 server for 80286 DOS or Windows (but not working on 8088 or 8086). regards, Jakob

It's fairly easy to write new graphics applications, but of course we've got the 128k code/data limitations... If, OTOH, you're looking to run unmodifed X applications on 286's in real mode, I would say that, unless you've got a lot of time on your hands, it's not available. Greg
