JT -- From: Vladimir Florinski [EMAIL PROTECTED] Crossposted-To: comp.os.linux.misc Subject: Disk errors with kernel 2.4.2 Date: Mon, 14 May 2001 18:15:52 -0700 I installed RedHat 7.1 on a new IBM IDE disk a few days ago and am having nasty disk errors ever since. They happen every few hours and mess up filesystems a lot. So far I was able to recover by forcing e2fsck on the /usr partition in single user mode, and reinstalling the damaged packages. But it's only a matter of time until glibc gets damaged and then it's all over. Now this is definitely not the state of events I would like them to be. My old RedHat 6.1 worked fine on this machine on an old Seagate hard drive. It seems therefore that either the 2.4.2 kernel is broken or the new disk is defective. The log file would occasionally have this message: hda: status error: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest } hda: drive not ready for command The disk is a brand new 40GB IBM 60GXP series (ATA-100), using dma transfers (up to 33MB/s, I presume, since this is a BX chipset) /dev/hda: Model=IC35L040AVER07-0, FwRev=ER4OA41A, SerialNo=SX0SXLL6552 Config={ HardSect NotMFM HdSw15uSec Fixed DTR10Mbs } RawCHS=16383/16/63, TrkSize=0, SectSize=0, ECCbytes=40 BuffType=DualPortCache, BuffSize=1916kB, MaxMultSect=16, MultSect=16 CurCHS=4047/16/255, CurSects=-217054981, LBA=yes, LBAsects=80418240 IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:240,w/IORDY:120}, tDMA={min:120,rec:120} PIO modes: pio0 pio1 pio2 pio3 pio4 DMA modes: mdma0 mdma1 mdma2 udma0 udma1 *udma2 udma3 udma4 udma5 hdb is a 24x cdrom, hdc an ORB drive and hdd is a 20x dvd-rom drive. So, I would really appreciate some help from those who are familiar with IDE drivers or had similar experiences. My system is not usable at this point and I need to know whether to replace the disk or the OS. I have this updated to the very latest BIOS available from Soyo, which is unfortunately some years old (it's no longer a supported product). My 486 machine is almost certainly older, and it has a Soyo motherboard and was fitted with an Award BIOS. It would cope with 8.4Gb (in LBA mode) and just ignore the rest of the drive, but I had no problem booting from it, and Linux was quite happy to use the rest of the drive. However, I eventually found a BIOS upgrade (MR Bios) from www.unicore.com (I actually used www.tssc.de but they don't seem to sell the BIOS upgrades anymore) which means my machine is now perfectly happy with any practical size of HD. Help! Date: Sun, 30 Apr 2000 14:36:35 GMT Well, I wrestled with the installation of XFree86 4.0 and I finally beat it, but the Nvidia drivers have kicked my butt and now I humbly bow to the USENET gods for assistance! I have the following: PII-350 96MB SDRAM Creative Graphics Blaster TNT Dell M770 Monitor (but not a Dell system) Aureal Vortex 1 Soundcard I have installed every library off of my Mandrake 7.0 CD that I could possibly imagine the new Nvidia driver needing and then some. The installation instructions very plainly state that to install, you simply go into the build directory as root and type 'make'. Well, all look find and dandy for say... 2 seconds? Then I get a flood of errors and the whole thing exits without compiling. I'm installing from the tarballs, I tried the RPM and it failed as well. I tried to get it to dump the entire error message to a text file so I could attach it to this post, but am not sure how, or if I can, but here is a description: I have approx. 1000 lines that consist of the following types of errors: /usr/include/linux/efs)fs_i.h:43: parse error before 'di_uid' warning: data definition has no type or storage class or /usr/include/linux/coda.h:219 dereferencing pointer to incomplete type or warning: control reaches end of non-void funtion Other types of errors are too numerous, but hopefully this rings a bell with someone. Almost all of these errors are in reference to various header files in the /usr/include/linux subdirectory, or they involve nv.o. The final line of the error is as follows: make: *** [nv.o] Error 1 I'm at the end of my rope on this one and am about to say, "Screw it". Hopefully someone can throw me a little extra rope here.
