Re: Ditching ubuntu

i ditched fedora in favor of ubuntu a few years ago, because of fedora
 stability issues

Me too. I loved Fedora, but 500 MB of updates every week, and packages
randomly breaking after updates, was too much. Ubuntu is much more
stable.

I have not had the stability issues that the OP mentioned, however,
both my machines are ATI video.

I recently created a thread-enabled version of Freecell Solver, that uses
several solver instances in separate threads. I'd like to get some indication
of the performance of the solver with different number of threads on different
machines. The instructions can be found below.

Do you still need this benchmarked?

The more people test and benchmark it - the better. Just use
freecell-solver-2.28.1.tar.bz from here:

http://fc-solve.berlios.de/download.html

I already got some useful input:

1. The Ubuntu CMake problem.

2. The fact that running strip (without /dev/null) emitted too much
confusing output.

3. A problem loading the run-time configuration presets (now handled in the
script).

4. A crash when running it on x86-64 machines. (Due to a bug).

So this call-for-volunteers was worth it.

lyx Hebrew keyboard layout variant issue

2009-05-21 Thread Herouth Maoz

Hi everybody,

I recently upgraded the Linux version on my work machine, and I
noticed something odd about the Hebrew kxkb layout, which I use in the
lyx variant. There was no = key, and there were two ] keys. The
default Hebrew layout had no such artifact.

After comparing my KDE-based Mandriva setup with my sysadmin's Ubuntu
(Gnome), it turned out that we had the same layout, and the thing
about it is that it's not completely defined. The number keys and
symbol keys which are supposedly common to the Hebrew and US layouts
are not defined. The default variant defines all the keys.

Where is the problem? In English, I don't use the US layout, but
rather the Dvorak layout, which places the ] where = is supposed
to be.

So, does anybody know where I can get a fully-defined Hebrew layout
for kxkb, in the lyx variant? If so, a hint on where to install it
will also be appreciated. And finally, how does one convince all the
distros to include a full layout? It's strange that both Ubuntu and
Mandriva have the same faulty layout.

As far as I remember, the layout did not give me trouble in Mandriva
2007.1 from which I upgraded. So there used to be a good layout out
there.

Thanks,
Herouth

On one of the boxes I installed Fedora 10. So far so good.
It seems quite stable.
I used livna in order to get all kind of rpm like skype with its

installing the latest nvidia driver required some debugging ( adding glx
required to edit xorg.conf)
I still like ubuntu over fedora.
I jumped to ubuntu when Debian screwed it up with the release with kernel

It depends on your needs. If you want just some very common tasks -
like browsing, spreadsheet etc, then you can use CentOS (I do).

Beware that many media application won't work, or you won't be able
to install them with yum. Just last week I needed to rip a DVD, to
my surprise there was a package for CentOS: DVDRIP-0.98.10-6.el5, I
installed it just to find out it does not work. Googling around, I
found it is a known problem but without a solution (the same package
 works on Fedora 10).

CentOS is very stable OS when used as server, not as media center.

For desktop use, I'll stick with Fedora, not necessarily the last one.
You have about 1.5 years maintenance from the distribution of a new
version. Fedora 11 will be available sometime in June.

specific tools that deal with these resolutions for nvidia, ati etc.

I couldn't find so far a script that runs when the 2nd screen is plugged. As

See /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/il

key AD12 { [ bracketleft, braceleft, 0x10005bd ]}; // Meteg

One way out of this is to use the X11 keycodes as a translation layer
between dvorak keys and qwerty keys. In this case, map AD11 and AD12 to
different keys. This is done in files under /usr/share/X11/xkb/keycodes/

Where is the problem? In English, I don't use the US layout, but rather
the Dvorak layout, which places the ] where = is supposed to be.

What layout do you use, exactly? What's you current XKB configuration?
