OT: Free external 56k modem

2010-03-16 Thread Jeff Mitchell
I don't know if it still works, and I can't test it anyway. First claim wins
(I'm always around town and the UC campus area if anyone is wondering about
pickup). Who knows... it might work and actually be useful.

I've also got a couple of recent Linux books if anyone wants to buy them.
Obviously this list isn't a place to sell things, but at the same time I
refuse to get a TradeMe account, because the News Corporation and Fairfax are
pretty corrupt/well-off already. Offering the knowledge opportunity is better
than letting the books gather dust and become historic.

'Ask not what GNU/Linux can do for you, ask what you can do for your
GNU/Linux.'

I'm certain that cheap in-depth knowledge will help GNU/Linux.

What are they and what price?

Linux Network Administrator's Guide, Third Edition by Tony Bautts, Terry
Dawson and Gregor N. Purdy.

Also: Linux Command Line and Shell Scripting Bible, by Richard Blum.

I'll sell these at $30 each. They're both in mint condition.

Hi Jeff, I would be into the modem if you still have it. I plan on
getting up to the get together tonight, also my son Rohan has a place at
15 Rutherglen Ave, it could be put in letterbox there (preferably in a
water proof bag or something, or text me on 0272497326 and I will pick
it up, cheers Kevin

I too have a modem free to a good home. It's a Dynalink e-modem (1456VQE-C).
Complete, in original box. Please contact me off-list if you want it.

Cheers,
Chris

when its in the original box still.

My old ISA Dynalink modem, V1456VQH-R5-NZL, will forever hold a special place
in my heart.

Why? This dial up modem never disconnected, no matter what conditions the
copper cables submerged below the water table for 30 years or Telecoms coal
fired exchange threw at it.

I used to download iso images with wget and this 56k modem. It would take
three nights, downloading between bed-e-byes and sparrow fart.

Cheers Ross Drummond

Likewise - my netcomm pocket rocket is safely stored 1200 baud of
goodness, and it used 9V batteries like they were going out of fashion.

Pity the poor cable jointer who has to dig up a cable to repair it,
and the hole keeps filling with water.

They have pumps in the truck for that, and spanky wee tents to keep the
rain off.

I'd be more worried about the lead and tar sheathe they use to
waterproof the bundles. Using a gas blowtorch to soften the lead and
make it watertight again...
