There are a few mailing lists of LUGs and PUGs around the country whom
I've cc'd with your request - at least in terms of meeting up with some
FOSSers spread throughout the South Island (of which I'm one ;).

like to do it with me.

I don't have any more detailed plans than that, but I reckon I'd hop
over the strait soon after LCA, spend a week doing stuff and then fly
 back to Sydney.

If anybody is interested, we could meet initially at the conference
and then take it from there. I haven't booked my flights yet, but I
suppose I could pick a flight out a week later from, say,
Christchurch, and sort out the week's activities when in Wellington.

Suggestions on how to do this are also welcome.

Kiwi PyCon Media Statement - Conference Emphasises Language's Benefits

2009-11-01 Thread Tim Knapp
NEW ZEALAND PYTHON USER GROUP
Media Statement November 2, 2009
IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Conference Emphasises Language's Benefits

Simplicity, Flexibility, Beauty! is the theme for Kiwi PyCon 2009, a
conference being held this Saturday and Sunday in Christchurch to
promote the Python programming language in New Zealand.

Python has been described as the closest programming language to the
English language and is therefore very simple to learn. Due to its
simplicity, Otago University have decided to teach Python as part of an
introductory course to programming and there will be a presentation at
the conference regarding how the course has benefited students at the
university.

Python also runs the software on the XO laptops, which have been
distributed to over a million children in developing countries worldwide
as part of the One Laptop Per Child project. There will be a
presentation regarding OLPC at the conference including a demonstration
of a number of XO laptops in action.

Python's flexibility will also be highlighted throughout the conference
programme, with presentations on how it is being used in the field of
animation, in computer games, on cellphones and websites. Some of the
presenters at the event will be coming from England, America, and
Australia.

“Registrations sold out 4 days prior to the registration closing date”
comments Tim Knapp, Conference Director, “which really highlights the
great level of interest in the language throughout New Zealand.” The
conference starts at 8:30am this Saturday at the Canterbury Innovation
Incubator. For more information go to http://nz.pycon.org.

[ATTN: Christchurch people delegates *needing* accommodation] Accommodation for Kiwi PyCon 09 Delegates

2009-10-09 Thread Tim Knapp
ATTN: Christchurch people delegates *needing* accommodation,

Just another email re. accommodation for pythonistas coming down for
Kiwi PyCon 09. If you're able to help out at all with providing
accommodation for a delegate please let me know offlist. Just a
reminder, we're not talking about providing accommodation for an
axe-wielding looney but for a fellow pythonista, which I'm certain will
be a mutually enjoyable experience for both host and guest :)
Also, accommodation may be the difference between someone being able to
attend Kiwi PyCon 09 or not.

Just to emphasise too, priority will be given to pythonistas who without
free accommodation would otherwise not be able to afford to come. So
though I invite those onlist to contact me re. finding some free
accommodation, if you would otherwise be able to afford this on your own
I can't promise we'll be able to fill your request.

Thanks,
Tim

Kiwi PyCon Media Statement - How a programming language is changing the Web

NEW ZEALAND PYTHON USER GROUP
Media Statement October 5, 2009
IMMEDIATE RELEASE

How a programming language is changing the Web

The main keynote speaker at Kiwi PyCon 2009, Joel Burton, an
internationally recognised trainer and presenter, will explain how the
programming language Python is becoming the language of choice for
developing websites due to its simplicity and flexibility. The
conference will be held at the Canterbury Innovation Incubator in
Christchurch on November 7th and 8th.

Other tracks at the conference will include: GUI, Science Math, Game,
and Applications. The conference will also have a dedicated Web track,
which will include presentations about many Python web technologies,
such as: Django, Twisted, Zope 3, Grok, and Plone.

The conference has attracted a lot of interest from many universities
throughout the country and staff and students from Auckland, Massey,
Canterbury, and Otago universities will be presenting regarding how
they've used Python in their research.

“As Christchurch has the reputation of being the Silicon Valley of New
Zealand, its been really great to see a number of electronics companies
in Christchurch support the event”, said Tim Knapp, the conference
Director. Tait Electronics, a radio communications manufacturer, is a
Gold sponsor for the event.

“The positive response we've received from the IT community in New
Zealand has been really encouraging” commented Mr. Knapp. “Really, no
matter what industry your business is in, this conference will be of
benefit to you.”

Registration closes on October 23rd and registrations are limited. For

Hello all,

The Kiwi PyCon 2009 team have been beavering away in the background and
we can now announce that we now offer another payment option - Paymate.
This will be of particular benefit to our international delegates as it
provides the option to accept credit card payments for your admission
fees.

Also, in order to provide the optimum wireless experience at Kiwi PyCon
2009, we've also included an option in the registration form that asks
delegates who will be bringing a laptop/wireless device to the
conference to specify which Wifi technology their wireless card supports
(i.e. 802.11a, 802.11g or both).

Hi all,

December's Christchurch NZPUG meetup will be a deployment workshop. We
will be particularly looking at Buildout, a python-based deployment
technology - think of it as insert your favourite package management
tool here on steroids but it's platform independent (windows, *nix,
osx, bsd, solaris, et al). It is also the deployment technology behind
OnlineGroups.net :)

World Plone Day - 7 Nov - New Zealand Press Release

2008-10-23 Thread Tim Knapp
Hello all,

Please find below the NZ Press Release for the forthcoming World Plone
Day event - everyone welcome!

Thanks,
Tim Knapp

   World Plone Day – 7 Nov – Wgtn/Auck/Chch

Surviving the global economic crisis: Plone Open Source community fights
back with collaboration.

From big business to Government agencies to non-profit organisations, no
one is escaping the financial crisis engulfing the world economy. Jobs
are being lost and projects put on hold as spending is reduced. IT
managers are being forced to look for innovative, cost-effective
solutions which deliver quality results within budget.

Open source technology is increasingly satisfying these needs using
collaboration between a large number of people to achieve efficiencies
of scale. More and more, business and Government are realising the
immense benefits of open source solutions which include:

 • increased value for money (such as no licence fees)
 • superior security
 • better quality
 • global support by a community of users and developers.

The economic crisis is a catalyst causing organisations to consider open
source as an alternative and move away from propriety software for
monetary reasons. But once they discover the some of the less known
advantages of open source, many of them will stay with it even when the
economy turns around.

The Dutch government set a soft deadline of April 2008 for its agencies
to start using open-source software. Ministry spokesman Edwin van
Scherrenburg said, the government estimates it would save $8.8 million
a year on city housing registers al one after switching to the Open
Document Format standard.

Plone is an enterprise content management system solution and one of
the largest open source projects on the planet. The Plone community is
organising World Plone Day on 7 November. This follow the sun event is
a global initiative involving 27 countries around the world where
Plone integrators, users and developers will hold seminars, presentation
and lectures about Plone and what it can do for you and your business.

In New Zealand Plone day is being held in Wellington, Auckland and
Christchurch. For more information please visit http://plone.org/wpd

Christchurch NZPUG Meetup This Friday 01 August

2008-07-29 Thread Tim Knapp
Hello all,

Please find below the details of our upcoming Christchurch NZPUG meetup.

Thanks in advance,
Tim
Event info--
Details below:

Date: Friday, 01 August 2008
Time: 5:30-7pm
URL: http://nzpug.org/MeetingsChristchurch/Aug2008
Talks:
  * Carl Cerecke - Python Decorators
  * Adam Boileau - Security Hacking in Python
Costs:
Light refreshments will be provided as usual. Please bring a gold coin
($2) to help support this.
I won't have a chance this Friday to get some
savouries prior to the meetup so was planning on getting pizzas.
Proceedings will also take a bit longer this coming Friday as I wanted
to raise the issue of the NZPUG charter for the incorporated society
(see other thread) so having pizzas to munch on while we're discussing
that would be nice imho :) 3 Large Pizzas delivered comes in at $36 and
I've got $16.50 from the last NZPUG's contributions so we have a balance
of $19.50 to make up in contributions 'on the day' - could those coming
give some indication if they can assist in paying for the pizzas? $4-5
each would more than cover it (and have some left over for next times
after meeting snacks!)

RSVP:
If you haven't already emailed me to let me know you're attending,
please do so we can make plans for after preso nibbles/etc.

Look forward to seeing you all there!

Kind regards,
Tim
