Re: UserGuide.lyx on BibLaTeX (?)
Thank you, Juergen and Uwe. I hope the BibLaTeX section will find its place in User Guide now. Full implementation of BibLaTeX with its many options does indeed look like a complex task, but I hope some basic support will come in a few years, at least at the level of the current hacks at the wiki. (if for nothing else, time has come to forget about character encodings and switch to unicode!) Because it is such a complex package, and because you can use it quite well with the workarounds documented on the wiki (that's why I never really feel urged to dive into it: because biblatex works sufficiently well for me with LyX as is). > Jürgen is our linguist and you should discuss with him what can be done > for proper support. Someone with much time and a good deal of knowledge on both UI and core side is required. The biblatex user interface derives in many ways from that of BibTeX. Many core and UI changes thus need to be made. This belongs to the documentation for which we have a separate mailing list. I'd appreciate it if you included this short note BibLaTeX in the UserGuide. Uwe, how do you feel about it? Well, I don't know much about bibliography handling. But if Biblatex is so useful, why isn't there support for this in LyX? Jürgen is our linguist and you should discuss with him what can be done for proper support. Jürgen, what is the status and could you please review if this text makes sense to be included to the user guide: --- 6.5.3 Bibliography databases (BibLaTeX) Bibliography ! Databases Bibliography ! BibLaTeX BibLaTeX is a modern and more powerful approach to managing bibliographies. It is, unlike BibTeX that uses its own language for formatting of the bibliography, entirely based on TeX macros, which makes it easily configurable for anyone with a good knowledge of LaTeX. It also employs a very capable bibliography processor, biber, that enables the use of many bibliography sorting schemes, multiple bibliographies within one document, their division by the document parts (chapters, sections) or topics (keywords). BibLaTeX, with biber, fully supports Unicode, and has been localized to many languages. The user guide begins with Chapter 3 in the Package Documentation at http://www.ctan.org/pkg/biblatex. Even though it has no support for BibLaTeX built in, LyX can still be made to use it with a few simple tricks. Detailed instructions can be found at http://wiki.lyx.org/BibTeX/Biblatex. --- I also notice that the title of the next subsection - "Bibliography layout" is a bit vague. I think this should be 6.5.4 Citation format Bibliography ! Citation format Indeed. I changed this now. regards Uwe
