Lyx for multiauthor documents

1999-02-24 Thread Francesc Moll

Hello,

Here I go again, I installed (actually, the sysadm installed) a recent
version of LaTeX and everything works fine. I'd like to ask you for advice
in the following:

I am involved in the project of writing a book. There will be five more
people located in two continents writing different parts of the book. Two
people (including me) are more or less experienced LaTeX users, while the
rest are new to LaTeX, so I thought LyX would be very useful for them (and
I found out it would be for me, also). My question is: what are the main
difficulties or shortcomings we should face because of having several
authors?

I saw there is the possibility of inserting a lyx file into another one, so
I think we could e-mail lyx files to the project master and he could
include the different files and compile them. Am I right? I saw a message
in this list saying LyX was not recommended for multiauthor documents. Why?

Any suggestion or comment will be highly appreciated. Our alternative to
LyX seems to be MSWord, so I am willing to do *whatever* it takes to make
LyX/LaTeX a viable choice.

Thanks,

Francesc

Re: \textgreater and such

First, could you tell us what version of LaTeX you are using? I
thought that \textgreater would be available on most installation
without particular intervention, but I might have been wrong.

Thank you Jean-Marc, my version of LaTeX is 1995/06/01. I will upgrade to
1998 version and that will surely solve the problem. I would let you know
otherwise.

\textgreater and such

1999-02-16 Thread Francesc Moll

Dear Lyx users,

I am a new user of lyx, with some experience on LaTeX. After installing lyx
I tried to print the tutorial and user's guide. When compiling any of these
files through lyx, some LaTeX errors appear because of \textgreater ("")
and related definitions (\textbackslash, etc.). I tried to figure out if
there was any package I was not using where these things are defined, but I
could not find any. Eventually I could print by including in the preamble
\newcommand{\textgreater}{$$}. I imagine this is not exactly what I was
expected to do.

My question is: what is the package where this definitions are? Am I using
an old LaTeX and these commands are standard in newer releases? (I checked
the LaTeX book and LaTeX Companion and I didn't find any mention to them).

Thank you,

Francesc
