Absolute minimal TeX for use with LyX?
Hi... I am a big LyX fan, and am currently using it to transcribe several reams of electronics notes from years ago. While my main PC is out of commission due to failed hard drives (it is evil and will be replaced!), I am running LyX (without TeX at all) on an old laptop. The problem here is that I am severely limited by the size of its hard drive. I have installed SuSE 6.4 with a few updates, and currently have only 75MB left on /usr. This is not enough space to install both TeX and LaTeX, at least not from RPMs which are built with all the bells and whistles. Therefore I am asking the (T)experts here: What is the absolute minimum I need to install in order to view and print basic documents? Here are some things I know: I do not need BibTeX. I do need AMS book class, and right now it seems that (even though I have SuSE's te_ams RPM installed) LyX does not make ams-book available, which means I don't have the cool Definition, etc., environments. I do not really need extra fonts; I don't actually need to print these documents, though it would be nice to have LyX available to write letters and such -- I could remove KOffice to free up some space. (I can replace it with LyX and gnumeric, I think. :) My options as I can see them, right now, are either to install RPMs, perhaps with broken dependencies, to get the bare minimum of stuff on here, or to build and install only the pieces of (La)TeX necessary for basic typesetting. I am not afraid to edit Makefiles, or spec files, but I'm not sure what's involved here. If someone, preferably a SuSE user, could give me some information, I'd greatly appreciate it. One question though, are the EPS files ASCII or do they have lots of unprintable characters (you may view the file with less; unprintable characters are shown as XX where XX is some hexadecimal number). Maybe the EPS files are in MS-DOS format--ie, the lines end in CR/LF pair while lines on Unix end on only LF (and lines on Mac end on only CR!). If this is the case, try converting the files to Unix using dos2unix, recode, or similar utility. You could also try processing the EPS files with "ps2epsi" command and see if they work then.

Thanks, -- // Carl Hudkins :: ICQ 5723399 // // "Wake me when it's over, touch my face // Tell me every word has been erased..." --TMBG

Maybe the EPS files are in MS-DOS format--ie, the lines end in CR/LF pair while lines on Unix end on only LF (and lines on Mac end on only CR!). If this is the case, try converting the files to Unix using dos2unix, recode, or similar utility. You could also try processing the EPS files with "ps2epsi" command and see if they work then.

lyx-Anfänger-Frage
Horst Jurkat

Hi Horst, a simple but important question: how did you install the LyX 1.1.6? AFAIK SuSE ships lyx-1.1.4p3 and on the SuSE FTP Server there is no update to 1.1.6. (Yes I know there are rpms from third party but ...) >From with directory do you start LyX? Did you try to save the .lyx file first? For me it looks like a problem with permissions within the filesystem to create the LaTeX DVI file and therefore there is "nothing" to print. You can try to export a .ps of your document and then print it from the shell.

Importing Gnumeric spreadsheet, rotation by 90deg
Dear all, I have a spreadsheet, created in Gnumeric. I can export as latex2e, reLyX it and include it within a table float. So far so good, however, the spreadsheet, whilst not enormous, does not fit horizontally across the page. What ERT do I need (and wherabouts!) to rotate this by 90 degrees within the float? NB: 1) I need this to be within the .lyx file, as I need to semi-automate the process, since I am playing with the numbers; 2) It needs to be in a table float so it appears in the list of tables. Any ideas (or any alternative spreadsheet import methods)? Just a report. I have lyx 1.1.6 built using gcc 2.95.2, gmake 3.79 on solaris 8 (w/ all recommended patches). It writes out lyx files that can be reopened. gcc 2.95.1 should be OK, but I would try it with 2.95.2 and see what happens. BTW, love lyx, thanks for the great program.
