Exactly. When you install the Windows bundle, it includes MikTeX and
JabRef(?), not sure if that's exactly right. Isn't JabRef a
bibliography thing? (This is new to me.) So a new user like me doesn't
have to worry about making sure that when LyX is installed on Windows
for the first time, it's a fully functional system. But on the Mac,
that doesn't happen. The Mac LyX package does not include a TeX system,
and I'm guessing no bibliography option. So if a new user got a copy of
LyX from some free software place, it's not going to work right out of
the box, and the user isn't going to be happy. I don't know what the
user gets if it's for Linux.

I just now looked a bit more at the LyX site, and it's intimidating to a
new user, lots of things there that may as well be written in a foreign
language if you are completely new to typography and the LyX world. Even
more so if you are relatively new to computers. (Something every site

I guess: the point is that without -nofork if you have xdvi already open,

Have you really tried without nofork option?
I just tried the standard call

I found the command \reversemarginpar, which corrects the error except
that the notes are now too far away from the text, right at the edge of

Any way to fix this? I tried adding width arguments, e.g. [width=12pt]

Since no one has answered this I have dug further and come up with this
bug report from 1999, saying that it is due to a deep problem in the
Latex engine:

http://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-devel@lists.lyx.org/msg05248.html

The only workaround suggested is to put \clearpage or \eject above the
section header, but of course this introduces an unwanted page break.

As far as I can see this makes marginal notes unusuable for the book
class. Unless I'm wrong, perhaps it should be documented in the help

  ...
Special build flags: build=release warnings use-enchant
LyX binary dir: /usr/bin
LyX files dir:/usr/share/lyx

the old g-brief letters produce an error message when opened:

The selected document class letter (g-brief) requires external
files that are not available, The document class can still be
used, but the document cannot be compiled until the following
  prerequisites are installed: europs.sty

(The same happens if I create a new document from the g-brief-de

I have already reconfigured LyX (Tools - Reconfigure).

It looks like europs.sty is no longer part of the package

Hi Doris,

you probably need to install MacTeX, the MAc version of TeX, typographic
engine that convert lyx files into pdf. You may want to look at the LyX
wiki page on Mac installation for instructions: http://wiki.lyx.org/Mac/Mac.
Here is an excerpt on MacTex, which includes the link to the MacTeX site :

Prerequisite

You need a TeX installation. The easiest option is to use
MacTeXhttp://www.tug.org/mactex/.
The .dmg file for a complete MacTeX installation is very large ( 1 GB),
but it is a very complete distribution and installs right out of the box.
MacTeX includes all the components necessary for TeX to work, and includes
the bibliography managing program BibDesk.

Users with slower download speeds might want to download BasicTeX, a much
smaller distribution, linked from the MacTeX page.

Cheers,

Stefano

Lyx not saving words to personal dictionary

2013-09-09 Thread Alfredo Maldonado Guerra
Hello,

I'm using LyX 2.0.3 under Ubuntu 13.04. (The 2.0.3 version is the latest
available in the Ubuntu repositories at the moment).

I'm using the default spellchecker engine (Enchant), language = English (UK).

When I add a word not recognised by the spellchecker to my personal dictionary
LyX stops highlighting it in red, as expected. However, when I close the
program and open it again, I notice that all of the words that I added to the
personal dictionary are again highlighted in red, making me believe that they
were not added to my personal dictionary. Of course, adding words every time I
start a new LyX session is quite cumbersome.

How can I make LyX remember words added to the personal dictionary between
sessions?

Thanks for your help in advance.

If I understood it correctly, the point was bundling TeX and LyX. This
would probably make it easier for first-timers. But the download would be
massive, which persons who just update LyX probably would not like.
Downloading if needed would require a script that someone would need to
create and (not the least) maintain.

As for documentation I personally think the wiki, Tutorial and User's
guide are excellent. But I am probably blind for difficulties a beginner
faces. Unfortunately I think those that have the difficulties fresh in
mind, and are the ones that I think should update
http://wiki.lyx.org/Mac/Mac (or create a Beginner's video guide or
whatever they find would be helpful and is currently missing for a
beginner) are often hesitant to do this since they think they are not
experienced enough. So we have a bit of a catch 22Š

All the best!

Anthony,

If you're using the book class, by default you are assumed to have
chapters.

If two-sided page layout is selected, a Chapter environment will
automatically start on a right hand (odd numbered) page, inserting a
blank page where necessary. So starting the text body with a chapter
heading will solve the problem.

Is there any special reason why you are not using the Title, Author,
etc., environments for the title page?

Personally, I prefer to use the book(KOMA-script) class (a lot more
options, but defaults work well) or memoir class (an infinite number of
options, a lot of them different from anything else in LaTeX, and an
excellent manual, but a very steep learning curve), but the book class
should work for what you're doing. Attached is a sample file to show
what can be done.

I suspect your PDF viewer is Acrobat Reader, which has the unfortunate
(ill-conceived, misbegotten) habit of putting a write lock on a file while
displaying it. Option 1 is to switch to a different PDF viewer. (There are
several good few ones for Windows.) Option 2 is to change your viewer to a
script (batch file) that closes Reader and then reopens it. Some years back
there was such a script that I think was included with at least one Windows
port of LyX (Uwe's bundle?). You might be able to find it archived on the wiki.

problem in Lyx/latex? I see that there are various suggestions
offered in the manuals but they all seem to result in the need
for a bit of text adjustment (fiddling) as the final step before

 You should probably do

 Input theorems-ams
 ProvidesModule theorems-ams

The DefaultModule stuff just says to load the module, by default, when
modules are loaded, which will happen AFTER the layout stuff is loaded.
That is why your declaration gets over-written. When you use Input, the
 file is loaded immediately.

If I understood it correctly, the point was bundling TeX and LyX. This
would probably make it easier for first-timers. But the download would be
massive, which persons who just update LyX probably would not like.
Downloading if needed would require a script that someone would need to
create and (not the least) maintain.

As for documentation I personally think the wiki, Tutorial and User's

whatever they find would be helpful and is currently missing for a
beginner) are often hesitant to do this since they think they are not
experienced enough. So we have a bit of a catch 22Š

A lot of my original message, Message-ID: l0f8nq$iib$1...@ger.gmane.org,
was intended to refer to the true newbie/beginner. I'm just too damned
old to be a newbie! LOL

And a lot was meant to refer to the website itself, not the program or
documentation.

Anders is correct, I was talking about the bundling of LyX and some kind
of TeX program. Anders brings up a point about folks who only need the
update to LyX as opposed to someone needing the whole package. If you
use Windows, that's an option already. There are two packages
available, one for the person needing everything, like me, and one who
only needs to update LyX. If it can be done for Windows, why can't it
be done for the Mac? I don't know about any Linux versions, but I'd
still have the same question.

I've not had the chance to check the documentation for LyX, but my
experiences with documentation, especially on the web, is it's
incomplete and disjointed. There's no organization. No index. And my
questions are never answered. Neither do I get answers from forums,
from almost anyone. Commercial or open source. I've been trying to get
a networking question between OS X and Windows answered for 3 months. I
finally have some thing that's workable, but it's a kludge and ignores
any and all sharing restrictions.

As for the website, or documentation for that matter, my mind always
defaults to the lowest common denominator. How would a person who
doesn't know how to spell LyX respond to what is on the site? With the
people in my past, I'd say they would look at the site, and walk away
from LyX. I doubt that is what the developers would like.

If the truly new person, who found LyX using search engine, walks away
from LyX because nothing makes any sense to them, LyX has possibly lost
a convert.

One problem I've found with documentation is, it's almost always
incomplete and out of date. (Remember, this is a general impression,
I've not had the time to read the LyX documentation.) Even the LyX site
appears to be out of date regarding installation under Mountain Lion.
The site mentions ML's Gatekeeper, and how to get around it. But the
Gatekeeper wasn't a problem for me. Somebody apparently fixed the
issue, but the site is out of date on that.

I don't know if this has made anything more understandable or not, but
I'm out of time for today. :-(

Exactly. When you install the Windows bundle, it includes MikTeX and
JabRef(?), not sure if that's exactly right. Isn't JabRef a
bibliography thing? (This is new to me.) So a new user like me doesn't
have to worry about making sure that when LyX is installed on Windows

that doesn't happen.

I guess: the point is that without -nofork if you have xdvi already open,
lyx starts a new instance every time you execute direct search.
I also addedd the -editor option.

Have you really tried without nofork option?
I just tried the standard call
xdvi -sourceposition 445:example.tex example.dvi

Yes, I really tried both and it was like I described. I am sure: I clearly

Since no one has answered this I have dug further and come up with this

The only workaround suggested is to put \clearpage or \eject above the

As far as I can see this makes marginal notes unusuable for the book
class. Unless I'm wrong, perhaps it should be documented in the help

Hi Doris,

you probably need to install MacTeX, the MAc version of TeX, typographic
engine that convert lyx files into pdf.

Cheers,

Stefano

Attached is a sample file to show
what can be done.

issue.

Questions

2013-09-09 Thread Nathaniel Hilger
Hello,

I'd like to ask a few simple questions.

-Where do I find a User's Guide for mac Lyx? Many of the keyboard
shortcuts in the standard User's Guide do not seem to work on Mac.

-How do I toggle between open files in different tabs using shortcuts in
Mac Lyx? Right now I am clicking with my mouse.

-How do I nest a bullet into a bullet, to get cascading bullets on Mac Lyx?
The suggested shortcuts do not work for me.

-Is this the right email for me to send these kinds of questions?

Thank you,
Nate

Re: Thank you for View-Update

2013-09-09 Thread Paul A . Rubin

However, you may configure an alternate shortcut yourself.

- Open preferences (Command-,)
- Go to Edit - Shortcuts
- Add a shortcut for
 * buffer-next
 * buffer-previous
E.g. Control-Page-Down resp. Control-Page-Up. On a macbook you have to use
Control-Fn-Down resp. -Up instead.

 You should probably do

 Input theorems-ams
 ProvidesModule theorems-ams

The DefaultModule stuff just says to load the module, by default, when
modules are loaded, which will happen AFTER the layout stuff is loaded.
That is why your declaration gets over-written. When you use Input, the
 file is loaded immediately.

With the risk that I also might have missed the point. I think it was

As far as I can see this makes marginal notes unusuable for the book
class. Unless I'm wrong, perhaps it should be documented in the help
files?

Exactly. When you install the Windows "bundle", it includes MikTeX and
JabRef(?), not sure if that's exactly right.
So if a new user got a copy of
LyX from some free software place, it's not going to work "right out of
the box", and the user isn't going to be happy.

Hi Doris,

you probably need to install MacTeX, the MAc version of TeX, typographic
engine that convert lyx files into pdf.

MacTeX.
The .dmg file for a complete MacTeX installation is very large (> 1 GB),
but it is a very complete distribution and installs right out of the box.

How can I make LyX remember words added to the personal dictionary

My words are saved under $HOME/.config/enchant/en_US.dic . My system is
slightly different (debian testing, lyx-2.0.6 --- which, by the way, you
can install in Ubuntu since it comes from debian).

Check to make sure those directories are present (well, of course, with
that other language...), and that they are writable. Permissions
problems used to be more common, but still occur occasionally.

Thank you very much for View->Update (Ctrl+Shift+R). It's been in LyX
for many, many versions, but now it works, and it's a great help in
keeping the PDF I'm proofreading in sync with the file I'm modifying.

On my Windows 7 system the pdf viewer does not allow updates to the
file. Lyx gives me the error message:

"I can't write on file ..."

Does anyone know a way around this?

You should probably do

Input theorems-ams
ProvidesModule theorems-ams

The DefaultModule stuff just says to load the module, by default, when
modules are loaded, which will happen AFTER the layout stuff is loaded.
That is why your declaration gets over-written. When you use Input, the
file is loaded immediately.

Hi David,

Thanks for your help. Indeed the problem was due to a permission issue in the
$HOME/.config/enchant directory. The directory and its contents were owned by
root. I changed ownership to myself and I'm able to save words to the personal
dictionary (which is a file inside this directory).

Thanks again!

David's message prompted to check its man page and indeed, tha page says
that the personal dictionary is saved in
$HOME/.hunspell_default

which did not exist in my case. Creating it not solve the problem, however.
It remains empty after I save words to the personal dictionary from within
LyX. Anyone has any clue on how to fix this? The wiki page is silent on the
issue.

Questions

2013-09-09 Thread Nathaniel Hilger
Hello,

I'd like to ask a few simple questions.

-Where do I find a "User's Guide" for mac Lyx? Many of the keyboard
shortcuts in the standard User's Guide do not seem to work on Mac.

-How do I toggle between open files in different tabs using shortcuts in
Mac Lyx? Right now I am clicking with my mouse.

-How do I nest a bullet into a bullet, to get cascading bullets on Mac Lyx?
The suggested shortcuts do not work for me.

-Is this the right email for me to send these kinds of questions?

Thank you,
Nate

I suspect your PDF viewer is Acrobat Reader, which has the unfortunate
(ill-conceived, misbegotten) habit of putting a write lock on a file while
displaying it. Option 1 is to switch to a different PDF viewer. (There are
several good few ones for Windows.) Option 2 is to change your "viewer" to a
script (batch file) that closes Reader and then reopens it. Some years back
there was such a script that I think was included with at least one Windows
port of LyX (Uwe's bundle?). You might be able to find it archived on the wiki.

All the documents shipped with LyX are available below the Help menu.
Probably you're looking for the document "Shortcuts".

In theory it's Control-Tab or Shift-Control-Tab. But it doesn't work for me,
too :(

However, you may configure an alternate shortcut yourself.

- Open preferences (Command-,)
- Go to Edit -> Shortcuts
- Add a shortcut for
 * buffer-next
 * buffer-previous
E.g. Control-Page-Down resp. Control-Page-Up. On a macbook you have to use
Control-Fn-Down resp. -Up instead.

Widows and Orphans

Is there a simple answer to the typesetting widow & orphan
problem in Lyx/latex? I see that there are various suggestions
offered in the manuals but they all seem to result in the need
for a bit of text adjustment (fiddling) as the final step before
printing.

With the risk that I also might have missed the point. I think it was
suggested that if you RTFM. Your question will be answered and there
would be no need to post to the list.

If I understood it correctly, the point was bundling TeX and LyX. This
would probably make it easier for first-timers. But the download would be
massive, which persons who just update LyX probably would not like.
Downloading "if needed" would require a script that someone would need to
create and (not the least) maintain.

As for documentation I personally think the wiki, Tutorial and User's
guide are excellent. But I am probably blind for difficulties a beginner
faces. Unfortunately I think those that have the difficulties fresh in
mind, and are the ones that I think should update
http://wiki.lyx.org/Mac/Mac (or create a "Beginner's video guide" or
whatever they find would be helpful and is currently missing for a
beginner) are often hesitant to do this since they think they are not
experienced enough. So we have a bit of a catch 22Š

A lot of my original message, Message-ID: ,
was intended to refer to the true newbie/beginner.
