Re: Wiki page of the Day, how users find them once they're ready?

2008-08-11 Thread Eero Tamminen
Hi,

Could something be done for the old Wiki? If I use Google, it
returns links to the old Wiki which would seem to have mostly
IT2005/2006 information. Try for example googling ssh site:maemo.org.

Could something like for information on ITOS 2007 and newer, see
the new wiki at wiki.maemo.org be automatically added to the beginning
of each of the old wiki pages?

- Eero

I just added a note to:
http://wiki.maemo.org/Root_access#OpenSSH

about SSH X forwarding needing the xauth package and finding
the correct(?) page could have been easier...

Well, um, that really isn't the correct page for information like that at all.
A large part of the reason you weren't able to find up-to-date ssh info on the
new wiki is because it really isn't there. Somebody should probably put one
together.

Battery drain with Diablo 4.2008.23-14

2008-08-11 Thread Juan A. Suarez Romero
Hello, maemoers!

The battery of my N810 lasts a day after reflashing it with Diablo
version 4.2008.23-14.

Really I don't know why this happens. I've googled and seems this
problem is reported in several places.

Moreover, after a full recharge, I've flashed it, put the device in
offline-mode and removed the MMC card.

Without using the device at all, after one day it powers off due to lack
of battery.

I've repeated the process several times, even uninstalling all programs
that comes with flash, and no luck.

Any clue about why this happens?

This usually means that some process in the device is waking up
at about second interval (which doesn't really show up in top
unless it does also something else).

When the device is in offline mode with MMC out, if you run top in
XTerm, does anything else besides the top, xterm (maemo-launcher) and
Xomap show up using *any* CPU?

What if you disable all Home applets and close all applications
also (if you already haven't)?

Have you added multimedia (audio, video) files to the internal

Do you have the RD mode enabled? It can drain the battery in a day.

Yes, the intention was to add a header to the top of all wiki pages
saying that the wiki had definitively moved, and that the old wiki was
locked.

The wiki got locked, but the deprecated message was only added to the
front page.

I just added a note to:

If there is content in the old wiki which should be moved (after all, I
exercised some editorial judgement on content that was of a good enough
quality to move), then please move edit it. It's better to create
useful new pages than to refer to the deprecated wiki.

In general, one-line wiki pages aren't very welcome :) Perhaps a page
about SSH in general, which talks about X relaying, but also (say) how
to set up an ssh tunnel, etc?

What does plain RD mode do which affects battery so greatly?

Multi-boot Diablo and Chinook

2008-08-11 Thread David Greaves

I've written up my progress here:

Neither the Chinook nor Diablo partitions run correctly; they both progess to

I'd appreciate some assistance :)

RD-Mode is an interesting one. All enabling it does is set a flag in the
CAL. The bulk of what happens in in /mnt/initfs/linuxrc and
/etc/rc2.d/S99ttyusb0 which just read that flag and do things if that flag
is set.

I don't see anything wrong, few random hints

- extract rootfs.jffs2 from .bin again and never mount it rw on desktop
i.e. do 'mount -t jffs2 -o ro /tmp/mtdblock0 /tmp/jffs2' on PC. I've
seen corruption of the image if mounted rw on PC.

- use tar instead of rsync (should not make much difference)

- performance tip - mount destination ext2 with noatime, run rsync with
--inplace to prevent creating 2x more files in destination (one
temporary, one real)

Re: javascript interruption

2008-08-11 Thread Brad Midgley
fwiw,

I've noticed that when using the browser, if I haven't clicked
anything on my n810 for a while, the javascript execution in the
 browser is halted.

it's sort of cosmic... the answer was 42.

I had to build and periodically execute acpi_fakekey 42 to keep the
browser awake. 42 is the value for the left shift key... plus I get to
hear the keyboard tapping away by itself.

I would feel better with a hack-free way to do this. It won't work on
my n800 since acpi_fakekey can't find a keyboard. I'm not sure how to
change it to insert events into a different device or if there even is
a no-op I can insert there that won't get ignored.
