Re: N810 discount code frustration
Hi and thanx for your reply. With all the respect, the terms of the program estated clearly that you had to be based in one of the supported countries. If you weren't you still could apply and have chances of getting a discount code, at your own risk. That's fine with me. I'm sorry, I should have read that. It's still annoying to be treated as second-class citizen by the people you wanted to help when the philosophy of open source is all the contrary, but there's nothing I can do about it. Only the Nokia shop can deal with your problems. Please insist with them. That's what I'm doing, with no result though... After the billionth time they heard from me, they said they'd forward my case to the department responsible for payments on the online store, and I haven't heard from them since then. The best thing to do would be to find a way to ship directly to Greece, from any Nokia store. Nokia shops can't ship out of their countries due to commercial reasons. There is also a lot of fraud attempts on online purchases and this is why they tend to have strict policies on payments with credit cards. That's fine with me too. I wouldn't be complaining if one of the following conditions was met: 1) I had successfully managed to send the N810 to someone in Spain 2) since they cannot send to a different address than the card's billing address, they had been consistent to their policy and not dispatched the first order 3) they had dispatched the first order with the complete shipping address instead of truncating it after my verification 4) they had dispatched the second order like the first one 5) they had released the money on the credit card and given me a new discount code Do you understand my frustration now? Honestly, the way things have turned out now, all I want is to have the money on my credit card released and have a second discount code sent to me, just like they did with my previous order. I'd then be happy to have someone send it to me. We understand all this is uncomfortable for you, but please also understand that you decided to go through the unsupported path. The situation as you describe it isn't uncomfortable for me. I knew it since the beginning. The way things have turned out now has me completely annoyed... I am not trying to blame anyone but the people in the Nokia store who are not doing their job correctly. I'm not sure about N810 program but with N800 there was a FAQ page http://maemo.org/community/wiki/n800developerdeviceprogram/ (see Nokia shops don't cover my country, do I still have a chance?) and implications were discussed in this list many times. Maybe with future developer device programs (if any) this should be stressed again to prevent or minimize such frustration. Here are the facts: - devices are sold only in some countries - you need to use online store of those countries - you need to use credit card with shipping and billing address from that country So the best way is to have friend from that country who will buy the device for you, use his/her own credit card, gets the device, then preferably also tests the device (and handles possible replacement) and then ships it to you. Unfortunately you can't ship device directly to you and you can't use your own credit card. And most probably you can't easily claim warranty in your country if device arrives broken or gets broken later. This is the reality you either accept or not. The other choice Maemo team had (and I think they really considered it) was to limit the program only for developers from those selected countries to prevent similar unhappy stories. Fortunately they decided against such 'unfair' setup and some developers (including me) are very happy with this :-) The first (770) device program was done differently and maemo team shipped device directly which was of course better for developer outside of those countries but I can perfectly understand this was not easy and most possibly such experiment was possible only in the beginning of such project. Yes, this is incredibly frustrating for those of us who are second-class citizens in Nokia's eyes. I hope you'll manage to get a working discount code, if the one you originally got doesn't work any more. N810 discount code frustration
Dear everyone, I was one of the winners of the N810 discount code contest (being a developer of aMSN) and I'm having serious issues with it. Mainly the Spanish Nokia store is to blame, but I am sick and tired of calling them and I'd like to get some help. I don't really know if this mailing list is the place to get some help, and I'm sorry in advance if I'm inadvertently spamming everyone, so I'd be glad to be redirected somewhere else if needed. Anyway, here is the story: I live in Greece, which wasn't in the list of available countries for the discount code program. I selected Spain, because there was a collaborator of mine there who could bring me the N810 in person. However, the N810 wasn't available for a long time - or sometimes it was, but my collaborator was in Greece. It eventually become available and I happily placed my order on March 11th. That first order got canceled due to not enough credit available (OK, that was my fault), so I immediately called to ask for another discount code and placed another order on the same date. The second order smoothly got sent the day after, but it never arrived. About a month later, I got an email informing me that the order was returned, and so was the money on my card. (A long time later, I realized that this was due to the following reason: I had entered the address correctly, it also appeared correctly on the verification page, but somehow got truncated when dispatching it). However, my collaborator had since returned to Greece, so I just asked for yet another discount code and waited. After idling for quite some time trying to find a solution, I finally managed to talk to another person in Spain who agreed to send me the N810. I placed the second order on May 20th. More than a week has since gone by, and it still appears as not yet sent. I called them on Tuesday, and they said it got canceled because the shipping address didn't match the billing address (How could it, since the billing address was Greek? And why did it get sent the previous time anyway?). However, the discount code was used and the money still appears retained in my credit card. I asked for my 4th discount code by phone, but now I realized that it is for a 5% discount. For goodness' sake. Of course, I will try to call them again tomorrow, because I want the money to become available on my card and a valid code. I could also send the money and the new code (once I have it) to that person in Spain and have him send the N810. However, I'd love to be able to get some assistance here, or maybe a better alternative. The best thing to do would be to find a way to ship directly to Greece, from any Nokia store. If this is not possible, I have a friend in Switzerland, so maybe if I could get a code for that store? Any kind of assistance would be more than welcome, since my patience has run off... I can send further information, such as confirmation emails, previous discount codes and order codes, to anyone interested.
