It'd be really bad if the GPS chip will be weak as on N810. Cause my device
spends a lot of time to find location.

Re: N900 GPS Problems

2009-11-30 Thread Aniello Del Sorbo
Are you guys using the N900 with a SIM and a data plan on it?

The GPS on most phones are Assisted-GPS chips.
That means that IF there is a network connection, they will use SUPL
servers to reduce the time of fix to a bare few seconds.
But if there is no data connection, then they will behave as regular
GPSes and the time for the fix can go up to 20-30 mins.

Do not compare these GPS chips with the ones in specialized navigators
as they tend to be much more optimized and they usually store some
data locally or have a better antenna, not really sure, but they are
designed to get a fix asap [that's what you also pay for!].

I do have a data plan and I get a fix, every time, in seconds.

In my (short) experience it is _worse_.

I have been unable to get a GPS fix using just the internal GPS. I
tried 2 or 3 times in very open spaces, and after 3 or 4 minutes I
gave up (note that I haven't tested since I upgraded to 42-11, I don't
know if it makes a difference).

The N810 was slow but I almost never had problems if I stood still for
a couple of minutes. And after that it worked reasonably well.

With an internet connection available, though, this one is very fast
(10 seconds). And looking at how the Maps application is, I think
it's meant to be used with a data plan. Otherwise it's not very
useful.

same for me, but Maps (even if is the worst map application after N810
Maps) doesn't need an internet connection because you can pre-load the
maps downloading them from OVI servers.

As far as I can tell without an internet connection you can only select
a destination via the map, not by address.

N900 GPS Problems

2009-11-14 Thread Sveinn Thorarinsson
Hi,

Wondering if other people have this problem, and if so, if it is hardware or
software related.

Most of the time, I cannot get a fix on my location using the internal GPS.

This problem occurs in different scenarios. For example, when I open the map
program that ships with the phone it sometimes can get a fix but most of the
times it cannot. I have compiled and run on the phone the sample GPS program
provided in the wikis and have the same issue there.

I seem to have better results when I am at home, maybe that's because I am
also connected to the wifi when I am there..?
Two people I know have been unable to get a fix at all since they got the
N900..

Have any of you had the same issues?
( I am hoping this does not mean the internal GPS is just a low quality
sensor and that this might be fixed with a firmware update..)
