2003-01-12 Thread Roman Jirasek
Hi Matteo and List

I have come to the conclusion that Steve can't receive emails
from list members. He can only send emails in bulk. This could
be the direct result of his local providers he may be using, or it could
also be the fact that he ignores peoples emails, who knows?

People ignore my emails, but then again, I can't blame them.
Never mind, my eyes are dry, must be meteorite dust.

Re: [meteorite-list] Opinions On An Unclassified Saharan - UPDATE

2003-01-12 Thread Jeff Kuyken
G'day Zelimir, Stefan, Bernd, Frank List,

Thanks for your help. Just letting everyone know the update. While there are
a couple of similarities between DAG 430 and my piece; I believe that it
probably is an LL4. As Frank indicated, Scott Brey has some VERY similar
material on his wesite. NWA 531 is classified LL4, S1, W1 and could quite
possibly be paired with this piece. Although Stefan also has a very similar
piece which is awaiting classification and should be announced soon.

Thanks again,

Re: [meteorite-list] re METEORITE TIMES From Paul and Jim

2003-01-12 Thread Mark Miconi
Title: re METEORITE TIMES From Paul and Jim

I like the idea! I think that it would sufficently
insulate the magazine from any responsibility especially if it is clearly stated
the "the links provided are the sole responsibility of the web page owner and do
not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Meteorite Times, which only provides
the forum for the articles and thatany questions, corrections
oreditorial issues be directed to the owners of the article in
question."

That is straight from our attorney who I was
fishing with yesterday. He said that clear language explaining that the
Meteorites Times is not responsible for what is presented and that the Meteorite
Times ONLY provides the forum for it to be presented should be enough to
insulate the MT.

Again we were fishing miles from his office and I
had sort of explained what had happened with the limited knowledge I have of
what led to its demise. He pointed out that infomercials are presented on TV
stations and the stations are not liable for the information and products that
they present because they state that they do not endorse the
product/information.

Hope this helps

he had been talking to his wife about it for the last20 minutes. When we

RE: [meteorite-list] - Thanks Art!

2003-01-12 Thread Greg Redfern
Dear Art,

We have seen recently the unhappy results of what can happen in this
business of meteorite information sources. But what I want to acknowledge is
the opposite, the crucial daily importance of the List to us all.

In this world seemingly out of control and headed for who knows what, the
List, its people, information and dialogue (more often positive than not!)
is something that I look forward to every day. When it goes down, it is a
definite loss to me (and all of us).

Art, I cannot thank you enough for what you do for each and every one of
us day in and day out. Everyone, just think what our meteoritic life would
be without this list..no Bernd updates on everything under the Sun, newest
fall/find info, Ron 's daily news from NASA, on and on it goes.

For all of us (humbly), thank you Art, for all you do for us. It is very
much appreciated.

With sincere gratitude,

Greg Redfern

Would you;
1) define rare or are you fishing? (You want Rare? how about

2) be more specific as to sizes of your specimens.
3) would you also use one of the other meteorite-related, mailing lists
for your trades /sales-- as a good faith demonstration that you
aren't just playing games on this list? We are getting back to the
suspicion that your e-mails and your actions aren't consistent. I
subscribe to them and I never see you posting on those lists designated
for sales/trades..DUH.
4) refrain from posting a specific trade more than ONCE?
5) Please tell us how why so quickly tire of your acquisitions? You
seem to beg for a given meteorite one week then be in urgent need of
getting rid of them the next...Have you considered renting?

Hello Paul and List,

I would also like to thank Art for the service he has provided us. Many of
us have fealt welcomed by the community created by this forum and can not
imagine a world without it.

Thank you also to Paul and Jim for provided some of us writers an outlet for
our ramblings and for listening to the masses and bringing Meteorite Times
back in a way that sounds very promising. I think the feelings displayed by
the list show that the service you have provided is welcomed and needed.

I also suggest that those that have not subscribed to Meteorite magazine now
take the time now to do so. I think you will find it as valuable resource.
Many of the best writers in the field regularly contribute to its pages,
including list favorite, Richard Norton. (His current series on thin
sections is a must read).

It takes many people a lot of time and money to provide these services and I
am very thankful they exist and that I have been allowed to be a small part
of it.

Warm thoughts from a very cold Kansas..

Elton, Rosie, Steve and others,

This is a tiresome subject.

Rosie you were right on target last week when discussing the attitude of
Steve who seems to often be offering his mine is better than yours
attitude, and again today when you commented on Elton's attempt to lead
Steve to better deals. I would have to say the number of willing traders
out there is shrinking by the day. The approach taken by Steve is brash and
irritating. The rumors of some of these dealings are not surprising. I'm
sure a book could be written about them all but who would want to read it. I
think he even dreams of such a book. No fame will come from the approach
taken.

Steve, you should treasure your collection a little more. The revolving door
approach demonstrates that these things are nothing more than badges to
you...and we have the problem of having to experience your presentations
with each new wonder...it is not appealing to me or most others I would
suspect. I understand the idea that these are like cash, and trading is one
of our options as collectors. But you seem to have developed a new method.

Steve, I think you might be surprised at how many awesome, intact (for the
most part) meteorite collections that are out here. Many awesome specimens
that were acquired at a great price or through a great deal.

Here is to the true collectors. Here is to field collecting of any
kind...that is where your mind begins to treasure what discovery and
collection is all about. Everyone should do both if they can. I would not
trade many of my personal earthy finds...even for a slice of marjalahti.

Well, to all those going to Tucson...have a safe and enjoyable trip, and
hopefully get along with each other. I would love to be there to meet all of
you, including Steve. But I'll remain back east dreaming of Gold Basin and
the rest of the show. Report in please.

As suggested by others: Steve...it is time to lay low and cool it...both
here on the list, in your dealings and in Tucson.

This is a tiresome subject.

Elton... neither do I understand.. I do not know how rare is defined.
They are all rare to me... shrugs.

Sometimes ... my suspicious feminine nature takes over.. and then I think
strange ideas...but.. it seems to me...it is a way of flaunting a new
acquisition without coming out and saying.. I have this and you don't...
 neener neener.
I have friends in high paces.. and you don't. or.. Am I stud or
what?

Just crazy Rosie ramblings as I said.. sheesh maybe he really means to
trade. But when I tried... it never worked out.

[meteorite-list] apology

2003-01-12 Thread STEVE ARNOLD
Hi list. It seems some people on this list are on me again for to much"SPAMMING".I seem to owe everyone an apology. Iam going to tucson as a novice as far as the social and know;edge part of this great hobby. I want people to like me and accept me for who I am. I will really try to tone it down in the future. Icannot help my aggresive nature. That is who I am as a person. And I am not going to change for anyone. But I am sorry for the few who do not like me because of my SPAMMING. I will try and tone it down in the future. I just love this hobby so much. Again I apoligize for my over agressiveness.

[meteorite-list] NWA R-chondrite pairings

2003-01-12 Thread John Divelbiss

Hello all,

On to new subject.

Can anyone tell me if any of the different numbered NWA
R-chondrites are paired? Like NWA 753 and 978, both R3.8's...and also NWA 782
and 800...both R4.0. Along with Ouzina...also a R4.0.

The reason I asked isbecause I was oneof the
curious torecently buy a "non-magnetic" NWA meteorite offering from Dean.
I received it this weekend and it looks just likea fresh slice of 978 I
got from the Hupes. Very nice...but unclassified I suppose.

Just curious about pairings...maybe it is not known and yet to
be studied,

John
