Re: [meteorite-list] Pellisson, the end of a free meteorite hobby?
Martin, list, I was personnaly attacked by the Ps on their web site together with Farmer, Bruno Carine, Dean. Ps had to wipe names after Bruno and Carine fist legal action. They say they have won the case. Humm, I have a copy of the judgment. I must not read properly french, but I understood that they were condamned to several k euros of fine. I understand that in the Ps cosmology when you pay fine , you are a winner . Fair enough to be mentionned. I will not tell what I do to react against this. This a personnal answer to a personnal problem. But many on this list do not want the Ps back in meteorites. Easy: when you order from The Ps, ask for an invoice, and report your transaction to the french administration. It is very easy, one of my very close relatives is in charge of the tax infractions in Grenoble, just were they live. The Ps must know that anytime they make business in meteorites, they are in danger. ( I will forward the invoices or the details of any of your transactions if you need help. ) They must know that no customer is a safe customer. BTW, their libyan meteorites were smuggled through at least 3 borders, their algerian meteorites as well, plus infraction to Algerian Laws. I did not saw these facts in the case against Bruno Carine. The Ps have a very selective memory. They also read all my posts and use them to document their files in the case against BC. But they only take a phrase here and there. To day I must reveal that a laywer receives copy of oll my emails, in their integrity, just in case. I am a professinnal dealer. I have the means of my politics and I do protect myself. I must also reveal that I have the best connexions in the administration of 2 large saharan countries, just say algeria and mauritania. This is not a personnal warning. Just facts. Please Bernd ask for your invoice to the Ps. Bernd you must know that a professionnal dealer with a business licence pays taxes and all sorts of things. Ps sell meteorites twice the price you should pay. When you buy at Ps, you are buying in a duty free !!! Ask for the discount today. Now Bernd you're really surprising me, you as a person of keen intellect. We had here and frequently have the revely of the Hupes, Farmer, Bessey, yip and also Matteo et.al. with sometimes unpicturesque expressions and boring recurrent litanies, but don't you see, that this accusations of that Pellisons have a fundamentally different quality? Read their pages, about NWAs and terrorism. Can you find there any hard proof or even only a hint which could manifest their allegations? I can't. I'm really not interested in the motives, what those person intend with this tirades and unbacked claims, although it is quite obvious, but what are they doing? They use the current discourses and especially the paranoia with the islamic terrorism (which seems to be most wide spread in USA, where the most and wealthiest collectors by the way are living) to discredit and to ruin their possible competitors as FectayBidet, Hupes, Bessey, Farmer, Franco, Ralew, Hmani, Habibi, Cimala, and all, who ever got a NWA in their fingers. This is the evident intention, not even very far behind the curtains - and, that what might be more important for you, they imply with this webpage, and this directly in the center on the stage, that you, Bernd Pauli, who possesses at least one NWA not bought from them, maintained with the purchases of those stones murderous, inhuman terrorism. (In my eyes a somewhat impolite way to speak about his own clients). This is the quality of their statements. Read it by your own. You may take it for the usual rants between jealous dealers, I for my own am Martin Altmann and a collector and certainly not in a need nor in the mood to be discredited and libelled by such persons with low attitude and of doubtfull character to have supported criminals in owning a NWA meteorite. You may going on buying from those persons, I for my part , if I won't find here a personal apology to me here on the list or a proof for their statements, will recommend to the 500+ collectors, whit whom I traded and dealt meteorites until know, to avoid to buy from the Pellisons. And so should anyone from this list do in my eyes, as we had this issue several months before on that list here and since then, those subjects were not able to add any proof to their website nor took it offline. My opinion. [meteorite-list] PF, Riverdale
Just a note to anyone interested. The seller of the Park Forest slice found in the back of the pickup truck in Riverdale Illinois hasn't responded to me. Did anyone else ask him for and receive an answer? I asked him where the truck was parked on the night of the fall and asked him if I could meet to see it. For $100 a gram I don't think it was an unreasonable request.. As David Freeman said, even though it may or may not apply to this situation, I'd sure like to know where this turnip truck was parked. Re: [meteorite-list] benguerir fall
Hiho, sometimes I mean to hear a certain tenor in that mails, which annotate, that now the Morrocans ask to high prices. Why should they not ask prices, which are closer to that, what a collector has to pay? Meteorites are meteorites, no matter where they fall. What is the difference between a Park Forest and this new fall? Why is it o.k. to sell Park Forest at 40$/g, as you may see on some webpages and this new fall should be to expensive with it's 6$? Why should we expect the Morrocans to continue to sell their meteorites at prices of a small fraction of that, what you'll find on the dealers pages or on ebay? O.k. in general the stuff has no field data and one has to do the classification and the preparation, but the prices at which they sold in past the achondrites f.e. were often ridicolous compared to those, paid later by the collectors (just take a look to the dealer's list). They found the stones, they brought them to market and many of us made some good bucks in reselling them. Imagine, if from the beginning on the Marrocains would have sold it directly on ebay to the collectors... Of course 6$/g buying price is not attractive for resale, but as a collector's price for a fresh new fall certainly not to high. And in general, if they start to sell more expensive, the retail prices will raise, the profit marge may be a little bit shorter for a certain time, but all in all, demandsupply I learned here on the list, it stays the same for the resellers. Or shall we regard the Morrocains because the living standard in Morrocco is lower than in Europe and USA as impudent, because they ask now prices closer to that here asked? The approaching meteorite does not choose where to fall, Morrocans are not second-class-people. If one thinks, that it's to expensive - leave it and say just, bravo Matteo, no thanks without complains. My thoughts. (If a new OC will fall in my backyard, be sure that I ask more than 6 bucks per gram. O.k. if it's a large one, perhaps to the closest collector friends and to those, who donated and helped in Romania, I would make a low price..) Thanks Bernd, I think I get it. I did not study philosophy though in the University. Life is not perfect, we should all get along but don't. The Pellisons are a joke, but a dirty one that has the potential to come back to haunt us all. What if they stir the pot so much that one of us goes to a North African country and does not come back? Where will that put the collectors market? Or how will it benefit the scientific world, who have benefited so much from this gold rush of new meteorites of some of the rarest and never before seen types? Re: [meteorite-list] Clarifying some things
Mike and all, I was answering Dean about it. The judgment will be most probably put online when all is finished. I have read the copies of what is allready judged. I cannot tell all but i can swear that the Pellisson lost and that it will costs them some k Euros. About going down there in Saharan countries I think that in some years ( I should say few years ) we will all need permits to do what we do. No problem, we will get permits if they are requested. These countries rich in meteorites are organizing themselves to have laws. We, professionnal hunters and dealers, have the advantage to be totally official. You have proved your skills. I think that having a permit or a license to hunt for meteorites is the same as having a permit to hunt big game. Many game hunter still go in Africa to kill big animals. I have no public judgement about killing big animals, it's a meteorite list. The best way is to be as legal as possible. No more tourists will buy meteorites in Morocco! This will concentrate the market towards people that really do the job: have them analysed. And you will get real official paper to export. And this will also reinforce the market making it more legal and transparent. Everybody is noticing that the number of NWA on shows is diminuishing. The market is becoming more professionnal. I may be wrong, but things are movin a lot in the Sahara and we will not have problems in the future, but we have to behave right with all these nice guys in the Sahara. They are and they will be for a long time the people that find 95% ( 99% ?) of the meteorites in the world. Today in each saharan or sub saharan country there is interest in meteorites. We cannot compete with them: they are good are looking in the country side and at distinguishing anomalies. We have the other skills to bring the best on the market, and science has its percentage or more. Nothing is lost. I am every positive about the effects of the NWA story. It will be an exemple soon for other countries. The way our community solves the problem will probably influence the decisions in many countries. Met Soc, IMCA and the list are sorting out many problems. At the roight present time we shoudl be more careful to avaoid any drama. The community does not need it. We are still fragiles. I will say: if you want to become a professionnal in meteorites, listen to the list and start a basic collection. you will build stonger bases and learn much more than going to Morocco to buy a lot of NWA. Forget the Pellissons they are done for or will be soon. I translate done for for them as they lurk: done for is foutus in french) Best regards Michel. - Original Message - From: Michael Farmer [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, December 04, 2004 6:17 PM Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Clarifying some things Thanks Bernd, I think I get it. Hi all just wondering, the Pellisons are implying that if you ever bought a NWA then you are supporting terrorist. How about a class action law suit against them for slander? Everyone who owns a NWA can get involved. I am one of many who do not like that being said about me. Fw: [meteorite-list] benguerir fall
Hi Martin and all, Only one thing to say here, the Moroccans do NOT consider the many terrestrial rocks we all purchase in search of planetary meteorites, the cost of flying there, the cost of commissions, bonuses, etc., etc., etc. we pay for these. The cost of equipment, blades. polishing pads, classifying, etc, etc. We take the risk, they reap the reward but will not consider our costs or 'risks', financial or otherwise. I believe the Moroccan market will end soon, why all this weird Moroccan behavior lately?? (anyone who has been there more than a couple times or work with them, opinions??) It makes me wonder if this is the last struggle to capitalize on their diminishing recourse. I ask this out of my own experience and am not trying to start something here. This is just the way the meteorite market world works in Morocco, they play each of us against each other and they play each other. Like Dean pointed out, we were told that Mike was just there buying up all of the new material at $6.00 a gram so we better hurry up and offer more... I just received an email today that my buy price is $2000.00 per kilo, or $2.00 per gram. In two days the price has dropped by 66%. Amazing! I am optimistic about this new fall, but cautionary at the same time. Is this a new fall? Once I see actual material in my own hand, I can not say. I hope so. If the Moroccans want to market their material directly to us, great, just do it properly without the games. If this were to ever happen, we would all have even less expensive NWA meteorites because those of us who deal there would not have to include the costs involved in acquiring these awesome finds. Just my two cents, Greg - Original Message - From: Martin Altmann [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: McomeMeteorite Meteorite [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, December 04, 2004 4:57 AM Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] benguerir fall Hiho, sometimes I mean to hear a certain tenor in that mails, which annotate, that now the Morrocans ask to high prices. O.k. if it's a large one, perhaps to the closest collector friends and to those, who donated and helped in Romania, I would make a low price..) Fw: [meteorite-list] Morocco new fall news.
Hi Rob and list, Great question, why do it? Because it's there, as spoken by British climber George Mallory in 1924 when he was asked why he wanted to climb Mount Everest. It's kind of funny you ask now. I just had a phone conversation a couple days ago with Mike. We both enjoy the thrill of the chase, the excitement of the unknown and experiencing different cultures. The risk is always there but is part of the drive that keeps us going. I am single, without children, so I can take these risks without worrying. One of my most adventurous trips was to Kenya right before the deadline when the US was to invade Iraq, see 'Meteorite Magazine' August 2003 article I wrote, when Dave Marsocci, myself and others went there to search out desert regions for the allusive black stones we crave . If you do not have the magazine, I will be happy to email you the article (out of copies, sorry). (Be sure to subscribe if not already there, at http://www.meteor.co.nz/ ) Other fun expeditions are in the Moroccan/Algerian border, or disputed zone as coined by both sides, Egypt,, etc, Those and others I have written about, or plan to... a side note, here is my article of my recent treasure hunting of Spanish gold after the hurricanes here in Florida http://atocha1622.com/GregHupe.htm Take care all and happy hunting whatever you pursue, Greg - Original Message - From: Matson, Robert [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 'Michael Farmer ' [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, December 04, 2004 1:22 AM Subject: RE: [meteorite-list] Morocco new fall news. Hi Mike and List, Hello everyone, I have just arrived back in Tucson after one of the most difficult and dangerous trips I have ever done. I was in Morocco for the last week to investigate the new fall and a new Pallasite. Everything that could have gone wrong on this trip, did, so I left Morocco very quickly and returned home. snip Quite the harrowing story! Thanks for sharing it with the list. Your experience should give people pause -- a moment to step back and evaluate life's priorities. We all love meteorites, but it's important to maintain some perspective. Space rocks are not worth incarceration, let alone injury or death. When I read about your experiences, as well as some others that have appeared in just the last year on the pages of Meteorite Magazine, I wonder why you (and they) risk it. Of course, I realize everyone has a risk vs. reward threshold, and there is certainly a thrill aspect to just barely avoiding a really bad situation. If Morocco and the western Sahara in general were the only games in town, I could understand the appeal. But if meteorites are the true end-goal, then it seems to me that anyone living in the U.S. has the advantage of deserts in their own backyard. Why risk life and limb (and foreign food/water intestinal distress ;-) when there are plenty of meteorites waiting to be found in your own home state, or its desert neighbors? Which segues into an ironic thought that occurred to me earlier this year: many people have wondered when and where the next NWA is going to occur. Perhaps it's quietly already happening in the western US. --Rob __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

[meteorite-list] Meteorite hunters: adrenaline junkies?
Hi Greg and List, Great question, why do it? Because it's there, as spoken by British climber George Mallory in 1924 when he was asked why he wanted to climb Mount Everest. As a mountaineer myself, I can appreciate the attraction. There is nothing quite like climbing an ice couloir at 14,000-feet elevation and thousands of feet of exposure below you to put your life into focus. It makes you feel ALIVE. It also lends perspective to the really minor inconveniences that occur in other facets of ones life (particular at work). You find yourself saying, you know, this is nothing compared to the time I nearly killed myself on North Palisade. It's kind of funny you ask now. I just had a phone conversation a couple days ago with Mike. We both enjoy the thrill of the chase, the excitement of the unknown and experiencing different cultures. The risk is always there but is part of the drive that keeps us going. I don't mind taking risks -- but I prefer to be in complete control of those risks. Going into militarized zones where I might be either shot or run over a landmine is not my cup of tea. I am single, without children, so I can take these risks without worrying. I don't have any children, but as of three years ago I do have a wife so I can't be quite as reckless as I was in my youth. (I've been a subscriber for 5+ years, so I remember the article). Talk about timing. My wife and I have a similar experience. We got married on September 8th, 2001, and left on our honeymoon on the 10th. We connected in London on the morning of 9/11, and while on route to Athens the WTC towers and Pentagon were hit. The airline didn't say a word about it. We found out from the taxi driver on our way to our hotel. He was in tears, speaking in very broken English. It took us about 15 minutes to figure out what he was saying, and even when we heard it we couldn't believe it. In the hotel lobby a stone's throw from the Acropolis we saw the footage for the first time. We actually watched live as the first tower came down. Now Athens is probably as safe as anywhere else for an American couple, but this was only the first leg of our 3-leg honeymoon. Most of our time was to be spent in Turkey. I knew our parents did not want us continuing on to a 99% Muslim country, so we chose not to contact them until we were already there. (I'm very glad we went because the Turks treated us like royalty.) Sadly, three years and 2 wars later, I don't think our welcome would be quite as warm now. For you, Mike and others, it sounds like meteorites may be the excuse for international travel -- but that the thrill is really in the experience and not so much in the meteorites themselves. That is to say, there's certainly more glamour in traveling abroad to an exotic destination to hunt for space rocks than there is, say, in doing so in the relative safety of the Mojave desert. But that doesn't keep me from wanting to go hunt in Oman! Take care, Rob __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Hello list, I walked out my front door a couple of nights ago and saw a huge red streak about parallel to the horizon. It was bright red and fast. This thing was huge, not anything like any fireball I had ever seen. I passed it off as some kind of reflection or something, maybe I was seeing things. It was between trees and stuff, so Today I ran into a friend that knows I am into meteorites and he said he saw the same thing, but with an unobstructed view. He said he saw where it hit, but we all know better. : ) But it does seem to confirm it was a fireball. Re: [meteorite-list] Response to the Pellissons
So true, My Grandfather used to say, Pelican oh pelican, your beak can hold more than your bellycan. I don't think these people will ever get their fill. Bill -- Original message -- From: David Freeman [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dear Michael; You have echoed my sentiments exactly. I may point out that a few years ago, a well known meteorite person was caught thieving meteorites from a certain country and his name was not spoken in meteorite circles for a very long time and is not today a welcomed member of our fraternity. I think that his lesson was just. I feel that maybe this same type of treatment of the pelicans may very well be just. Pelican, a sea buzzard that has a gut so full of dead fish that it can no longer soar...mmm. Maybe a slang name change is due since we already have one whose name we do not speak? [meteorite-list] Another Message for the Pelisson Brothers
Richard Roland, I have taken the time to carefully read through the following page on your website. http://www.saharamet.com/meteorite/data/Sahara/Nwa.html After sifting through what is written there and the emails that have been posted to the Meteorite List, I have come to a simple conclusion. It is apparent that your real motive is to eliminate anyone in the business or science of meteorites who is in competition with you. I find it hard to believe that the two of you could actually believe that this grand conspiracy with word-wide connections really exists. If you have REAL proof, please show it to us without delay. If not, then withdraw your claims and remove the page of lies and half-truths from your website. It is a pity that the two of you would stoop so low in an attempt to promote yourselves. I have been to your website several times over the years and it is a wonderful piece of work (excluding the above mentioned page) so I believe that you must be quite intelligent men. Add my name to the list of people who request that you remove the offending page from your website. Well to me it is apparent that their real motive is to eliminate anyone in the business or science of meteorites to ever deal with them again! How dare them claim any of us are supporting terrorism! I will never buy anything from them, heck, I would not take something if they gave it to me! Re: [meteorite-list] Another Message for the Pelisson Brothers
Hi all, At first I thought this was a spoof, like Proud Tom. But the message is ugly. I'm sure that someone with bad intent found and sold something in NWA in the history of time! It happens EVERYWHERE. The idea that a few decide that they can label the whole deal is actually very naive on their part. These people are imbeciles. Zero response to requested public debate always indicates a negative. I think they will go away, I think they already have gone. The legal systems in every country are overburdened. I don't think these squeaks will be greased. I'm sure they would like to be. [meteorite-list] well fed ducks
So much has been made of this. Why are these ducks being so well fed? Why don't you use your much touted delete button, Michael Blood? Bill __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
Re: [meteorite-list] NOT well fed ducks
Well, Bill, The answer to this is simple: This is not a bunch of quacking. This is accusing every dealer and every collector who has ever purchased a NWA meteorite from anyone but them of contributing to terrorism. If you think that is mere quacking, just see if, in fact, some bureaucratic nit wit doesn't rise to the bate and start slamming doors shut on freedom of commerce in regards to meteorites! Possibly many bureaucratic nit wits. This could have repercussions, not only in the free flow of NWA material, but of all meteoritic material. If you think this is mere quacking, then I do not believe you have reflected upon the depth of tragedy involved in the 9/11 incident. If you think this is mere quacking, then I guess you think it is ok to use the names of men of such contributions to the meteorite community as Art Jones, Bernd Pauli, Jeff Grossman and many others to try to prove all dealers and collectors except your self are contributing to terrorism. You don't think these acts hold the most profound potential to disrupt the free flow and availability of meteorites? This is much, much more than quacking. This is a truly serious threat to the world meteorite community. Your questioning of the seriousness of this situation truly makes me wonder about how aware you are of how the world works. If one does not see the enormously negative potential that has been generated by this web site they are lacking in both experience and in imagination. Bill, I encourage you to rethink your perspective on these matters. Most sincerely, Michael Blood on 12/4/04 11:23 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: So much has been made of this.
