[meteorite-list] 11 Reasons Everyone Should Own A Meteorite! Any More?
Hi All, Wow! I want to thank everyone for your compliments and comments on my 10 Reasons list. Very cool indeed. Thanks to,everyone and particularly Rob Matson for his kind suggestions on some minor changes to the list, namely numbers 3, 7 9. I've updated numbers 3 9 to better reflect a more OPEN mind-set about how long meteoroids were floating around in our solar system before crashing to Earth. In # 7 I changed the word sometimes to MANY in reference to how old meteorites truly are. In addition I added a neat little link I found when researching information for the list: http://www.mnh.si.edu/earth/text/5_1_4_0.html This is a neat little article I'm sure many of you already know about but it supports # 9 on my list very distinctly and therefore I like it! ;) Just kidding, I'd put it on the list anyway just because it's good info and an awesome theory. Maybe a bit more than a theory. Our planet had to come from somewhere so that's my best guess. Read it and decide for yourself. I've also split # 10 into two separate reasons since I added a # 11 with the Meteorites Make Great Gifts. statement. Also # 10 was expanded and I made it more meteorite collecting related. Again, I really appreciate everyone's comments and can't wait to hear the feedback on the changes. Talk to you guys soon... [meteorite-list] The high-pitched scream?
Hi folks, On another forum someone posted about a recent TV programme he'd watched about NEOs. At the end the guest astronomer said something to the effect that the first we know about an incoming impactor could be the high-pitched scream as it speeds through the atmosphere. It got me wondering; a sizeable body would be travelling at cosmic (ie very supersonic) velocity right through to impact, and therefore the scream should trail behind the object - in other words, we wouldn't even get that much warning. Was the speaker using poetic license or would there be any kind of fore-shock? [meteorite-list] AD: Pre-Tucson Sale
Pre-Tucson sale: These are specimens that I have had in my personal collection for the last several years. They were picked because of their beauty, aesthetic features and true historic significance. Besides these offerings I will accept offers on specimens that are on my website www.rocksfromheaven.com - Thanks, Jason Alamogordo: A rare slice of this 1938 find. It weighs 59.8 grams and comes with the original American Meteorite Laboratory specimen label and has painted numbers (77.63). The price on this extremely rare and historic offering is $550. Allende: This CV3 material is very undervalued for such a rare classification and a witnessed fall from 1969. This specimen is a full slice weighing 57.3 grams. The price is $500. Bruderheim: A complete slice of this incredible fall from March 4, 1960. This is a rare offering of a Canadian meteorite. This specimen was pictured in the book Rocks from Space and graced many great collections before ending up in mine several years ago. The price of this specimen in $450. Etter: A part slice of this L6 from Texas. It weighs 81.6 grams, but the true treat of this specimen is the original American Meteorite Laboratory label and painted numbers (H47.172). The price on this $500. Imilac: A beautiful 162 gram individual that is shaped like a rose. I was told by one aesthetic meteorite collector that this was one of the nicest Imilac specimens he had ever seen. It has several crystals protruding and if desired could be cut up into several nice slices. Specimens such as this are rarely offered and especially at such a low price.- $1600. Monze: A 44.8 gram full slice of this rare fall (Oct. 5, 1950) from Zambia. This specimen shows great inclusions and crust. The price is $400. Pultusk: This is an incredible specimen with primary and secondary fusion crust from a fall in 1868, which looks as though it fell yesterday. It weighs 59.1 grams and comes with it's an original museum label from the Museum National D'Histoire Naturelle. The price on this specimen is $1000. Suizhou: A 54 gram specimen from this L6 meteorite that fell in China in 1986. The price of this rare offering is $450. Wiluna: A western Australia fall from September 2, 1967. This is a beautifully crusted 19.44 gram piece with two sets of museum numbers painted on the top and side (#12934 and #354). The price on this rare specimen is $400. NWA 869: A 2664 gram individual with great dark crust and is shaped like a small loaf of bread. The NWA 869 find is arguably one of the nicest meteorites to come out of Africa with an interior that is full of interesting inclusions and features. This specimen would be a centerpiece in many collections. If desired it could be cut making several hamburger size slices. The price on slices could easily reach one dollar a gram, but on this whole specimen the price is just under $.25/cent a gram ($665). NWA 869: Another outstanding individual from this find weighing 7230 grams. This is a flatter specimen covered with thumbprints and a rich dark crust. It displays very well and measures 9 inches X 8 inches X 3 inches. If desired this specimen could be sliced up making slices about this size of dinner plates, which is what will be done if it does not sell. The price on this specimen is just over $.22/cent a gram at $1650. NWA 2965: One of the most intriguing meteorites and definitely one of the most undervalued to come out of Morocco. Whether it is a EL3, EL6, or Aubrite it is truly an incredible meteorite that will not always be as cheap as it has been the past year. This specimen is an endcut that weighs 5909 grams (I have the other half in my personal collection) and is the brown interior with black veins. The price on this specimen is wholesaled at $600. NWA 3163 (lunar): This is 10 grams of the moon. Offered here is 10 grams of lunar dust from the cutting of NWA 3163. The material is so beautiful and looks as though it was just dusted off of the moon itself. This would be great to use for many different types of projects (jewelry, educational kits, etc.). The price is sure to continue to climb on lunar material in the future, but this material is offered for $1000 for all 10 grams. Dhofar 1289: Two endcuts (347 grams and 1324 grams) of this nice looking L4 with a tan interior with some neat inclusions that are brown, orange, and black. These are a great price at $0.15/gram. [meteorite-list] Unclassified NWAs: What's the attraction?
Hi all, I've seen on some websites that dealers are selling unclassified NWAs. Maybe it's because I'm such a newbie, but I don't understand why anyone would want to buy them, especially if they look like just a typical ordinary chondrite or iron? It's just a space rock that was found somewhere in NWA (not a specific place) and isn't even classified yet, so you don't know if it's an H, L, LL, etc. Do people buy them because they are cheap, or because they are a mystery, or for some other reason? If someone else gets one classified, you have no way to know if the one you just bought is paired with it, or another one or is unpaired. There is no record, so no way to find out later. I'm sorry if this has been talked about on this list before. I've been lurking for only a couple months and hadn't seen it mentioned. Thanks for any feedback! WOW! I can't remain silent. MOST of us are interested in the rocks, you know the material that came from out of this world. I've heard it said There is no such thing as an ordinary chondrite and that applies to all rocks from space. Your argument belongs in a Bennie Baby Club. Why collect any with bent tags? Or Pokemon, Why collect any that aren't first edition? With meteorites, it is MUCH more than the collecting Tom In a message dated 1/12/2008 12:07:51 P.M. [meteorite-list] Inexpensive irons for sale for a good cause?
Hi all, I am looking for a source for very inexpensive irons. They should be small (around 10-15g) and $0.20 to $0.30 each. Can these be found at this price? At the lower end, I could buy a couple hundred of them. The cheaper they are, the more I can buy. :-) I am wanting them to give away to school children at one of the big shows next year. I would provide labels for them, so I would need a little more info than just Meteorite. :-) I would at least need to know where they came from (e.g. Sikhote-Alin or Nantan or whatever). A mixture of different locations would be fine, too. I just want to make sure that they are really meteorites and not terrestrial iron junk or slag. Any help would be appreciated! Hi Bob, Two cents per gram and classified means at best you could manage $40 to $60 for 2Kg to 3Kg of conveniently sized individuals. Are you sure that is what you meant, becuase, if you find someone, this collectors behind you will be worse than a run at the Fiesta of San Fermin. The best bet will be crushed Campos for over $2 per piece in that price and size range. Re: [meteorite-list] Unclassified NWAs: What's the attraction?
Hi Bob, Do people buy them because they are cheap, Yes, some do. because they are a mystery, Yes, some do. or for some other reason? Yes, some may want to create a diorama-like strewn field for display purposes. I have sometimes thought of doing this. Some (myself included) have bought them to give away to kids at various functions. I recently had a country crock container about filled with cheap NWA material that I gave away to boy scouts after they looked at the moon through my scope. Of course, being at night in a campground, some boys lost theirs in the grass so I would just reach in and hand them another. Some buy cheap NWA material to practice with, when they are first learning to cut meteorite material. Some buy them for re-sale, possibly thinking a huge mark-up will make them a lot of money. If someone else gets one classified, Few will bother to even attempt to get an NWA classified unless they first have cut a window into it and discovered what may be an achondrite. Hope this helps, -Walter Branch. - Original Message - From: Bob Loeffler [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Sent: Saturday, January 12, 2008 1:07 PM Subject: [meteorite-list] Unclassified NWAs: What's the attraction? Most were severely fractured, some broken in pieces along fracture lines allowing for the entrance of terrestrial contaminants. The interiors were stained brown from iron oxide. But I kept telling myself that it didn't matter their condition. These ugly ducklings are, after all, real meteorites...Off they went to the thin section maker. When they returned and I had my first look at their interiors my Ho hum, just another Sahara OC attitude changed. Like the story of the ugly duckling, within the few months of grinding and polishing, a transfiguration had taken place. These ordinary chondrites were every bit as beautiful and exciting as any chondrites I have examined through the years. I was moved by the fact that I was the first to peer into the interiors of these asteroid chps. Wonderful discoveries abound in these sections. Bob and the list, The need for NWA's is because the North West Africa as well as other areas provide a lot of the meteorites that we can then analize, giving rise to the various classifications. Not only that, but small NWA's make good giveaways for school children and adults. I've gotten one almost 1 kilo NWA from Dean, which I plan to get classified, hoping for an unpaired meteorite so that I can get a main mass. Who knows, maybe the NWA will turn out to be an exotic lunar or martian or even discover that you have a piece of Mercury or an astoroid. NWA's are very useful. Re: [meteorite-list] 'The high-pitched scream'?
Hi all: I just saw a movie on TV the other night. I was at the American Astronomical Society meeting and could not sleep, turned on the TV and there was a movie about meteorites. In it, on a number of occations, you could hear the sound of the incoming meteorite before the hit the ground and exploded. The movie was Meteorite! with Tom Wopat (Luke Duke). I know this is fact because a few weeks ago when I was preparing for a presentation on meteor showers, I found on the Web (so it must be true) two video clips: one from 'Armageddon and one from Smallville (where Superman grew up) and they both had screaming incoming meteors. Sorry, but along the lines of what Sterling said, there is some much bad science in these movies it has you screaming from the room in horror! Larry On Sat, January 12, 2008 12:20 pm, Sterling K. Re: [meteorite-list] The high-pitched scream?
Hi Mark, It would seem that it is possible but not in the ordinary sense. This could only happen when Electrophonic Sound was produced from the incoming object. It only occurs with large meteors but I'm thinking your scenario would be BIG enough! ;-) Electrophonic sounds are defined as sounds produced by direct conversion of electromagnetic radiation into audible sound. This is done through extremely complex mechanisms, some of which are still debated as the theory of electronic sound is relatively new in the last couple of decades. Basically, the sounds will be heard concurrently with the meteor as the very low frequency radiation travels at the speed of light. It's thought that this energy is so intense that it causes objects on the ground to vibrate which is the sound you hear... not necessarily the 'meteor' itself. [meteorite-list] AD Mali IMB
Hi List, even so many interesting ADs has been posted today, I try my luck and would like to announce full slices and end-cuts from Mali IMB ( impact melt breccia) small crump end cuts of this breathtaking IMB has been sold on ebay for 10-15 $/g the last weeks. Here I offer full slices at 8 $/g and crusted endcuts at 6$/g . The slices (and endcuts) are not grinded, for two reasons, first ,they are fragile, second ,it would reduce the contrast between the light Chondritic areas and the dark melt. So it might be possible you will find small sawing marks on the specimens. If you more like complete specimens with the strange IMB lithologi, even visible at the surface, I have put a link at the end of this mail to a running ebay auction. I will for sure not cut this beauty ,I think it's more for a sophisticated collection, than for slicing up. Anyway, if you are able to butcher this beauty, uhuhuaa bad boy !, you should be able to double your investion in a view weeks. (2001) Ugly Ducklings of the desert (Meteorite Mag., August 2001, Vol. 7-3, pp. 22-23): None of the meteorites had fusion crusts. The textural variations are so great that the explorer is guaranteed to see structures never before seen by anyone.
