Personally though, I think supply and demand is too simple a concept for collectible items. What I mean is, I wonder how much of this shift in price might be due to the recent strength of the dollar? In case someone is not following: An example of this is what is happening in the antique Japanese sword market. The value of the yen relative to the dollar is 120 to 1 currently. Which is different than it was about a year ago when the dollar was weaker, and the value was perhaps 100 to 1. Japanese swords in Japan that were selling for 100,000 yen last year (1000 dollars) are not currently worth 120,000 yen in Japan. They are still only worth 100,000 yen. In other words, the value of a sword does not go up simply because a foreign currency became stronger. However, because the dollar is stronger now, you can get a better sword out of Japan for the same price in dollars as you would have paid for a lesser sword last year. In other words, 1000 dollars today (120,000 yen) buys you a more valuable sword than it did last year simply because the dollar got stronger. Now consider a sword that an American sword merchant/collector bought from Japan last year for 1000 dollars (100,000 yen) and is now here in America. It is still worth 1000 dollars here, but now that you can buy a 120,000 yen sword for 1000 dollars, (and those swords are plenty available in Japan) why would someone buy a sword valued at 100,000 yen for 1000 dollars here in America, when they can get a better sword (valued at 120,000 yen) from Japan for the same 1000 dollars? This same type of scenario can be true in for rare books, meteorites etc. etc. If, for example, Mike Meteorite Merchant bought a 10,000 dollar 1000g Lunar mass from Morocco last year when the dollar was weaker, now that the dollar is stronger the same 1000g Lunar mass might only cost 8,000 dollars from a merchant in Morocco. That devalues Mike's meteorite. If he wants to sell bits and pieces of it, he has to sell it for similar value as what the newer cheaper specimens are selling for. It is full of expensive expedition gear so I tried to drive down there only to be turned away since the entire area is being evacuated. There are over 30 fire trucks on the scene when I left a few minutes ago and the fire is still nowhere under control. All the roads are blocked so I will not be able to evaluate the damage until tomorrow if they get the fire put out. One another note, I just assume not pay for all the free handouts to people who do not need them and are able to work. Re: [meteorite-list] Mauritania, Morocco, Tunisia, and Safety or Terrorism Concerns
I used to frequent a cafe in Marrakech when I was traveling to morocco every two weeks. That date was bombed a few years and several tourists died. I spent some time at the mall in Kenya that was attacked and nearly 100 people were killed in last year. It is eery knowing that these places where you have been many times are now gone or horrible things happened there. The Islamic countries are on fire. The insane jihadist people are on the loose. There are many Moroccans that visit this country to sell at the two biggest gem, mineral and fossil shows here, Tucson and Denver. They have been coming for years, long before the large increase in the number of meteorites that are being found in the Sahara. With a passport and visa, there is free travel between our country and theirs. There are a lot of Americans that travel there. The country's abundance of minerals, fossils and meteorites make it a popular place for people that have an interest in natural history to travel to. A quick look at the list from the State Department doesn't list Morocco as a country with travel warnings. http://travel.state.gov/content/passports/english/alertswarnings.html In fact, the Meteoritical Society held its annual meeting in Casablanca just six months ago. It was attended by scientists and meteorite enthusiasts from around the world. Desert borders can be blurry though. Americans haven't been safe along some of those borders for decades. Is Morocco a place you would be afraid to go to? Morocco shouldn't be grouped with the countries that have travel warnings just because Morocco is on the same continent with them and because of theories about social tolerance and the opinion of it being a good place to strike Western interests. There are many places that fit that criteria. The US State Department does warn us about travel to Mexico, the Ukraine, Iraq, Haiti, Honduras, Columbia and many other places including some that you mention. Morocco isn't one of them. Terrorist events over the last few decades have shown us that we may not be safe in places like Boston, New York, Oklahoma City, Paris and many others. Traveling anywhere including just down the street isn't as safe as it used to be. Morocco is one place I would feel comfortable traveling to. Paris and Boston too. Of course, it's possible this is not GB but the evidence looks very promising. Three years ago Joe Franske ventured to the north side of Lake Meade in search of the big end of Gold Basin. According to Joe, it took him 6 tries to get to the right location, but once he did, it took him only 3 hours to find a meteorite. This is a monumental feat to say the least. He brought me in on the project last March and I take no credit for this discovery. Sure, we all had an idea that the strewn field crossed the lake, we all drew lines, but only one guy had the steel to go get it done. Hats off to Joe. Joe and I have decided we are pretty much done out there for now. We documented well over 100 pounds, most of which was found on the south side of Jumbo Peak. Last week I extended the field another 5.75 miles with 2 finds on the north side of Jumbo, including a 34 pound stone that was broken into many pieces. We decided to give you guys some details regarding the find locations, hence this message, but in return we would like to know about any finds you make so that we may continue documenting the strewn field. Jim Kreigh, John Blennert and Twink Monrad did a fantastic job documenting in the past and we would like to do the same. I know there are some hunters out there that will not share and so be it, but most of us are good people and I would expect some cooperation for the good of the larger picture. Please send your reports to me so that I can share them with the scientist involved with our work. Joe found the first stone on the south side of Jumbo Peak and that is where the majority of the finds were made. The area is only about a mile wide and I highly doubt that defines the outer limits of the field, however, to go farther east or west is difficult due to terrain. Go onto Google earth and you will see the valley just south of the peak, and north of the park boundary, this is where you start. On the north side of Jumbo Peak you will find most of the area too soft for meteorite recovery. Decomposing granite has likely buried the stones too deep for detection. In my mind it's a small miracle that I found the 2 stones on that side. To put the difficulty into perspective, we spent 36 man days to locate the 2 stones and out of four hunters I was the only one to score. That place will hand your butt to you on a platter, as they say. As a side note; If you decide to give this place a try there are some things to consider. To get to the south side of Jumbo you will need a 4 wheel drive and it takes about 3.5 - 4 hours once you leave Mesquite. There is no phone service and the road out wants to eat your truck! If you go, plan to stay for several days at least, it's a lot of work and expense just for a day or two. If you have any specific questions feel free to email me. Good luck and fair sailing to all who go! Here's the low down on the science so far. I submitted samples from my 16+ lb. stone (found March, 2014) to UCLA this past summer. It did come back L6 as can be seen below. Dr. Kring wants to do more work including cosmogenics and such, on several different samples to help come to a conclusion as to whether or not it is indeed Gold Basin . When asked how I know it's GB I say that the classification is consistent, they look the same in hand, on the exterior and the interior, and they are in line with the logical progression of the known field. Sure, it could be something different, but simply put, the easiest, most obvious and logical answer is usually the right answer. I'd be very, very surprised if it was something else. UCLA (Rubin, Breen) received August 18, 2014, 2 pieces, 23.7 g L6 S4 W1 olivine: Fa 23.9±0.2 (n=15); low-Ca pyroxene: Fs20.3±0.3 Wo1.6±0.2 (n=12) plagioclase grains are typically 60-100 µm in size. It is just a very strange post. I'm not questioning the validity or facts, but selling of some small pieces and not naming the person trying to sell them looks strange to me. So we are awaiting a mystery curator to show up and offer some pieces. Michael Farmer On Feb 3, 2015, at 1:26 PM, Robert Verish via Meteorite-list meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com wrote: Yes, it is common knowledge that Ron's son, Jim, sold many of the meteorites from his father's collection. So, it MAY be that Jim was the executor of the estate, but in no way would I call Jim the curator. But that is in the past. I know that she has designated (in a notarized letter) a friend of the family to be in charge of the collection. He has agreed in writing: that he will not be paid for this work - not for labor, nor for expenses. This is the person that I am calling the present curator. By the way, I am also volunteering my time and effort with this collection pro bono at the request of the curator (and as a friend of the family). So, forgive me if I show little patience with all of these distractions. Reader's of this List should take note that I have clearly stated what I know to be fact from those statements which are only to the best of my knowledge. Too many posts to this List are stating conjecture and opinion (promoting an agenda) as if it were actual fact. This is not to reflect on those who have replied to this thread. But recent threads have been perfect examples. Personal agendas about the meteorite market, the Tucson Show, the BLM, and Nevada meteorites have been shown to have no basis in reality, let alone in fact. This is resulting in a great deal of misinformation. What I find worse is that obviously untrue statements are going unchallenged. After sleeping in we eventually made our way to the Inn Suites around 2:00 PM enjoying the pouring rain and flooding. Being an experienced show attendee, I was able to 'talk' my way through the blocked hotel parking area and found a spot 10 feet from the covered walkway. We spent the next three hours visiting with old friends, meeting new ones and finally meeting a few 'Facebook' friends I have never met in person. That night we met with close friends from out of state for dinner and enjoyed great seafood and Margaritas... Awesome first day of the show! Yesterday, after a relaxed morning of sleeping in again, we went to a couple show rooms and I bought two nice diogenites, a CM2 and a gorgeous howardite... We later met with friends for fantastic southwest grilled seafood and delicious pizza while watching the Super Bowl, fun times were had by all. The truth is that most people do not have much disposable income to attend the show in the first place is what the news is reporting. My point to Adam after reading his usual diatribe of crap that parking can't be too bad if I'm willing to risk parking my car at the show. I'm not sure where someone who isn't here and doesn't plan to come can spend so much time telling others what's going on here when he clearly had no idea. Amazingly plenty of Chinese and Japanese buyers were here, found parking, and even survived the flooding to spend their money. Chris Sprenger, an 8th grade student at the school, is determined to make the meteorite the official Kansas state rock. “The meteorite really has a connection with Kansas that it really doesn’t have with any of the other states in the U.S.,” Sprenger said. Back in November 1954, Ann Hodges was taking a nap in her Sylacauga, Alabama, home when a rock about 12 inches in circumference came crashing through the ceiling. The meteorite then collided with her thigh, leaving behind a large, conspicuous bruise. Thankfully, it didn’t smash into her head, or the scene would have been much more gruesome. When word got around about the meteor, the entire town flocked to her home. There were so many people curious to see what happened that she became extremely nervous and had to be taken to the hospital. Because she was a simple country woman, she wasn’t used to all the attention. It made her frenzied. The incident didn’t end there. Despite a government geologist confirming that the object was, in fact, a meteorite, police confiscated it and requested the Air Force’s verification. Many people in the tiny town thought the smoke trails in the sky and loud explosion meant a plane had crashed, while others, paranoid by the Cold War, blamed the Soviets. The object needed some clearing up. Once verified, the only other thing left to do was figure out who the rock belonged to. Of course, Hodges believed it was rightfully hers to keep. “I feel like the meteorite is mine,” she said, according to the Alabama Museum of Natural History. “I think God intended it for me. After all, it hit me!” But, as luck would have it, she wasn’t the only person wanting to stake a claim for the space rock. Her landlady, Birdie Guy, wanted to keep it for herself. Guy found a lawyer and sued Hodges, alleging that it was hers because it landed on her property. Although the law was leaning in her favor, the community wasn’t too happy about that verdict. So, in exchange for $500, they settled out of court. Soon after, the woman and her husband, Eugene, received an offer from the Smithsonian for the rock, though they turned it down — hoping to score a better offer. An offer they’d never get. No one approached them to purchase the controversial entity. In 1956, the Hodges wound up donating it to the museum. If you’re interested in checking it out, it’s still on display. The entire story is just a little heartbreaking, especially when you consider that Ann suffered a nervous breakdown from the meteorite hysterics. According to the museum, “she never did recover” from the frenzy that followed that fateful day. The couple later separated, and, in 1972, she went on to die of kidney failure in a nursing home. She “wasn’t a person who sought out the limelight. The Hodges were just simple country people, and I really think that all the attention was her downfall,” explained museum director Randy Mecredy. What makes this woman’s story so rare is that meteorites typically fall into the ocean or land somewhere desolate (not on top of a woman napping on her couch), according to Michael Reynolds, a Florida State College astronomer. “Think of how many people have lived throughout human history,” Reynolds said. “You have a better chance of getting hit by a tornado and a bolt of lightning and a hurricane all at the same time.” In the photo above, Moody Jacobs reveals her bruise from the incident. I have it on good authority that Tucson is fast approaching! With that in mind, I am once again giving my “Annual Eating Your Way Around Tucson” list, a slight name change from last year. This list has been put together with over twenty years of attending the shows. These are my opinions (well, my wife, Cookie, too!) only. I have no vested interest in any of these establishments, no free food, etc! I just like good food! Maybe you will find my/our tastes different from yours but all of these are worth a try! Again this year, I am leaving for Tucson mid-January! This will be my fourth year to make the 2200 mile (each way!) drive to Tucson. Cookie is flying out later! Guess that she is a bit smarter than I! But better days are ahead as Cookie is retiring July 2nd and will be ‘able’ to drive out with me in 2016! I am adding some new locations suggested by list members last year after prior posts. We did get to try some of them and enjoyed them VERY much. I hope to add more this year! NEW FAVORITES for us! Fist, a BIG “Thank you!” to Terry Sayther from Austin Texas! Terry sent us a couple of suggestions for breakfast … or ANYtime! We are calling them “MUSTS”! MUST #1: Bobo's Restaurant, 2938 E. Grant Road, 520-326-6163 http://www.bobostucson.com/ We at there ‘more than once’ in 2014! Everything is GREAT! I have to be gluten free but try the pancakes! They are the size of a plate! The omelets are WONDERFUL! Check out the deserts! MUST #2: Robert’s Restaurant (closed Sunday), 3301 East Grant Road, (520) 795-1436 http://www.robertstucson.com/ We also visited Robert’s a couple of times! Robert’s is just down the street from Bobo’s but on the opposite side of Grant! You cannot go wrong with either choice! If you are looking for GREAT ‘diner’ eats, give Little Anthony's Diner (, 7010 E Broadway Blvd, 520-296-0456) a try http://littleanthonysdiner.com/ I know this is not food/eating related but check out The Gaslight Theatre http://thegaslighttheatre.com/! During Tucson show time, the Gaslight offers a old west themed, hilarious melodrama! We have attended each year for several years and have enjoyed each performance! This year’s production is Two Gun McGraw. You can order your tickets online for best seat selection and then pick them up in Tucson. Now, a ‘Classic’! * Pat's Drive In, 1202 West Niagara Street, 520-624-0891 I should not list this first, but I AM! I first read about Pat's in Arizona Highways magazine. It is a tradition in Arizona! It is on a side street off N. Grande Ave, between Speedway and St. Marys. It is near the condo that we rent each year. I had driven within half a block of it for years and did not know it existed! If you like the old drive in restaurants, this IS the place for you! If you like greasy fries by the pound, this is for you! If you like GREAT chili hotdogs, this IS the place for you, please note that they have three degrees of heat for their chili! We have favorites that we think everyone should try at least once. In no particular order: NEW! NEW! NEW! This is our NEW “favorite” from 2013: * Guadalajara Grill was suggested by good friend, Dennis Beal, XTAL, (Room 120, Hotel City Center, Marty Zinn’s Arizona Mineral Fossil Show). We have learned that if Dennis suggests a restaurant, you BEST try it! He has never sent us to a bad one, not even a mediocre one! Guadalajara Grill – West, 1220 E Prince Road-520-323-1022 (also 2nd location: East, 750 N Kolb Road, 520-296-1122. We went to the one on Prince the very last night we were in Tucson 2013. Large parking lot that was FULL! It took us 15 minutes or more to find a parking place … then about 30-45 minutes to get a table … BUT it was more than worth the wait! HUGE portions of GREAT food at reasonable prices! You WILL enjoy it! * La Fuente Restaurant, 1749 N. Oracle Rd., 520-623-8659 REALLY good Mexican/Tex-Mex food. The lunch buffet is very good and very reasonable. If you're there for dinner, be sure to order the Guacamole made table-side. It is VERY GOOD! * Silver Saddle Steak House, 6th Ave. I-10 (310 E. Benson Highway), 520-622-6253 This place is near downtown and has some of the best steak that I've had in Tucson. If you're going for dinner, it is best to get there early or be prepared to wait 30 minutes to an hour. It IS worth the wait! I do not think that they take reservations. We ate at Silver Saddle at least twice in 2013 … and probably will top that this year! * Lil Abner's Steakhouse, 8501 N Silverbell Rd., 520-744-2800 This is a MUST for Tucson show visitors. I remember going there a lot

Adam, you live in a palace where the only industry is gambling. When economy dropped, so did gambling. People learned quickly how to live within their means, and gambling became a luxury most couldn't afford. Laughlin is the low end spectrum of gambling, a sad casino scene for the 70+ age group and $1.99 buffets. Next time but a house in a less speculative place. My only problem with California drivers is that they all stay in left lane no matter how slow they are going. I passed a thousand or more cars in the right lane because it is always clear. California has every right to try to protect it's agriculture. By the way, Australia is same, checkpoints at Western Australia border and all produce destroyed. Believe it or not, road maintenance is what the fuel tax is used for, we just have a lot more roads that need maintaining. And most produce comes from California. The negative evidence against that supposition is that M001. thru M008. are nowhere to be found. But this M009. may have been the best of the lot; a real keeper. The kind that you save for those games of one-up-man-ship when the hunters sit around the campfire and talk about the heartbreakers that didn't pan-out. You think that ones purrty, take a gander at this beauty, boys! If I'm at a dead-end on this one, I guess I'll have to make a thin-section to confirm ID. But then again, if I convince myself that this is just a limy siltstone with a small patch of psilomelane coating the exterior, a cheaper/quicker method of IDing would be to take a small chip and dissolve the carbonate matrix in acid, then examine whatever silicate grains remain under a microscope. I expect I'll see quartz. :-( In any case, I'll report back the results to satisfy anyone's remaining curiosity. Re: [meteorite-list] MASSSIVE Russian Event Asteroid? 14NOV2014
Yekaterinburg is a city of millions, and is also known as Tankograd because of the massive military industry there, WWII forced all military production and testing over the Urals mountains to protect from German invasion. I was there and everywhere you look there are military bases and tanks on the roads, jets flying overhead, artillery pieces lined up on the trains etc. Nuclear, chemical, biological weapons testing is all done in this region. This even was surely military in nature, regardless of whether the Russian military pretends it has no idea what it was. A video showing the explosion on the ground has been found, so whatever the event was, it wasn't a meteorite fall. Michel Farmer Sent from my iPad On Nov 20, 2014, at 12:42 PM, Sterling K. This discovery was made possible by reanalyzing the trajectory, which moved the impact line by 330 meters. Interestingly, the meteorites found on the ground are of different types, pointing to a parent asteroid of heterogeneous composition. Collisions of meter-sized meteoroids with Earth's atmosphere are relatively rare, occurring about 40 times a year. They cause very spectacular events, known as superbolides. One of the best known such events, the Benešov bolide, occurred on 7 May 1991 at 23h 03m 46s UT over the Czech Republic. It was recorded during systematic photographic observations by the European Fireball Network and certainly ended in a multiple meteorite fall, but no meteorite was found in the weeks and years after the fall, despite many attempts. In February 2011, nearly 20 years after the event, P. Spurný and his colleagues [1] measured the records again and analyzed the data with improved methods. This led to a new picture of the whole event with a revised atmospheric trajectory and a new impact location. This allowed the team to recover the Benešov meteorites, 20 years after the fall, exactly in the newly predicted area. It is the first time a meteorite is found so long after the bolide observation. The team found four small, highly-weathered meteorites with a total mass of 12 g. The probability that these four fragments come from different meteoroids and were found by chance at the same place is estimated to be 1 in 100,000 or less. Even more interestingly, these four meteorites are of three different mineralogical types. This means that the Benešov meteoroid was heterogeneous and contained at least three different types of material. After the Almahata Sitta fall, this is the second time that such a heterogeneous composition has been found. It raises the possibility that a significant fraction of all asteroids are heterogeneous and that they were strongly reprocessed by collisions with other asteroids in the main belt. I had the photo in hand to estimate to the best of my ability as to where the clouds were in the sky as related to Fremont Peak that morning. These clouds might have dissipated somewhat and drifted slightly to the south east 5 to 6 min after the fireball passed. I spent over an hour taking readings with my WWII Bendix A-7 sextant, and two WWI British prismatic compasses, averaging the readings of each. (BTW: these compasses are top notch, so good that they were used by sailors lost at sea to find destinations even without a sextant. The WWII Bendix A-7 is a fantastic sextant and very accurate as well) Readings from the compasses: (Magnetic) 35 - 36 degrees Easterly direction. Sextant, after estimating where the clouds were over Fremont Peak. Top cloud (larger one): 13.0 degrees above horizon. Bottom cloud (smaller one): 7.25 degrees above horizon. Average between both as the two clouds are linked in a chain ~8.6 degrees above horizon. The top cloud which is very dispersed after the six or so min after the fireball end at 15:52:32 represents the start of the fireball, and from reports it came in a a very steep angle ~45 degrees from the North East. This fireball was observed from the Belmont location and others West of Flagstaff including my all sky camera, as going DOWNWARD. If it rose up, or remained stationary instead of downward as it did, then it would appear heading toward and above the Belmont Weather station camera. In all sightings west of Flagstaff it went DOWNWARD and to the East. So the higher cloud appears higher in the sky due to the fact that the luminous flight began at about 60 miles or so. The smaller more defined cloud is the lower one to the ground maybe 15 to 20 miles above ground and closer to the Belmont Weather camera than the more distant larger dispersed portion of the smoke cloud. Do the trig. 13, 7.25 degrees above the horizon and an average between the two above the horizon taking into account the downward angle of the Fireball and the average assumed height between the beginning and the end of the event between 60 and 15 miles above the ground. The larger cloud is most likely over 120 miles away from the camera. The lower one most likely over 70 miles away from the camera. And the compass heading of 35-36 degrees is a magnetic heading, keeping in mind the magnetic variation of 10.5 degrees to East of the the Celestial Pole which is True North to which my all sky camera is aligned. Draw your lines accordingly from the Belmont Weather Station at Navajo Army Depot along that line of magnetic bearing 35-36 degrees average between the two 35.5 degrees. If you transpose to a map that is aligned to the true Celestial North, be sure to take into account the magnetic variation of 10.5 degrees in drawing the line. He Told me that the Money are safe and he just found the nomad quit their Place and he tried to reach them. i was little Bit reassured when I heard his voice. After half an hour , I tried to reach him again but no way , in Saturday Afternoon , he called me, He Told me : '' I got 1345g Lunar instead of 5800g Lunar ' I didn't understand nothing , at the same time I didn't know what to do. What is this crap? I can't even get meteorite posts through and now we have idiotic propaganda on the list? Michael Farmer On Sep 22, 2014, at 7:33 AM, BWFlowers via Meteorite-list meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com wrote: Former Obama Official: Climate Change Not 'Settled' Science Sunday, 21 Sep 2014 06:11 PM By Sandy Fitzgerald A former high-ranking Obama administration official says climate science and the implications of global warming are not settled, insisting such claims are misguided and stifle debate on the matter. Writing a Page One story in the Wall Street Journal Weekend Review section, Dr. Steven Koonin argues that group think among experts has been inhibiting the scientific and policy discussions that we need to have about our climate future. Koonin, who served at the Energy Department as President Obama's undersecretary for science in the Energy Department, is director of the Center for Urban Science and Progress at New York University. Urgent: Do You Approve Or Disapprove of President Obama's Job Performance? Vote Now in Urgent Poll Koonin's position strikes a blow against climate change activists as People's Climate March organized demonstrations at more than 2,000 locations worldwide. In New York, tens of thousands participated in the demonstration demanding urgent steps against carbon emissions as the United Nation's General Assembly opened. We often hear that there is a 'scientific consensus' about climate change, writes Koonin. But as far as the computer models go, there isn't a useful consensus at the level of detail relevant to assessing human influences. Koonin says his extensive training as a computational physicist with a 40-year career of scientific research and management, has given him an up-close knowledge of climate science. Detailed technical discussions during the past year with leading climate scientists have given me an even better sense of what we know, and don't know, about climate, writes Koonin. The point, Koonin says, isn't whether the climate is changing, as the climate has always changed and always will. Further, he says, there is little doubt that humans are influencing climate change, as greenhouse gases, mainly from carbon-dioxide emissions, have had an effect. But the main question remains about how the climate will change under both natural and man-made influences, which will affect energy and infrastructure choices. Those questions are the hardest ones to answer, writes Koonin. However, Koonin adds, while humans can cause serious issues for the climate, they are physically small in relation to the climate system as a whole, with additions to carbon dioxide to directly shift the atmosphere's natural greenhouse effect by only 1% to 2%. Other scientists have argued that the sun's solar activity has a much greater impact on earth temperatures that human activities. Meanwhile, while the Earth's average surface temperature has risen by 0.9 degree Fahrenheit over the last quarter of the 20th century, the increase has been much slower over the past 16 years, while the human contribution to carbon dioxide has gone up by 25 percent. Yet the models famously fail to capture this slowing in the temperature rise, says Koonin. Several dozen different explanations for this failure have been offered, with ocean variability most likely playing a major role. But the whole episode continues to highlight the limits of our modeling. Koonin says current global warming models have limitations. Many advocates of global warming dismiss or downplay contradictory data, he writes. To this end, Koonin cites: .Models that show Arctic ice melting over the past 20 years forget to note the almost equal growth of ice across Antarctica, which he says is now at a record high. .A prediction that the lower atmosphere in the tropics will absorb much of the heat of the warming atmosphere has not materialized. .The fact global sea levels in the first half of the 20th century rose at almost the same rate as today. .Climate sensitivity- that is, the warming induced by a hypothetical doubling of carbon-dioxide concentration, he says is no different, and no more certain than it was 30 years ago. These, and many other factors that are still not decided will not allow lawmakers and the public to make a definite decision when it comes to climate change, he contends. But I fear that rigidly promulgating the idea that climate science is 'settled' (or is a 'hoax') demeans and chills the scientific enterprise, retarding its progress in these important matters, he writes. Uncertainty is a prime mover and motivator of science and must be faced head-on. It should not be confined to hushed sidebar conversations at academic conferences ... Any serious discussion of the changing climate must begin by acknowledging not only the scientific certainties but also the uncertainties

Here is a little Ensisheim history to get warmed up by... Ensisheim meteorite... ...a meteorite whose descent from the sky onto a wheat field in Alsace (now part of France) in 1492 is one of the earliest instances of a meteorite fall on record. Maximillian I, who was proclaimed Holy Roman emperor soon afterward, assembled his council to determine the significance of this event; their verdict was that the meteorite was a favorable omen for success in Maximilian’s wars with France and Turkey. Accordingly, Maximilian ordered the Ensisheim stone to be placed with an appropriate inscription in the local parish church. The meteorite was fixed to the wall with iron crampons to prevent it from wandering at night or departing in the same violent manner in which it had arrived. It resides in the town of Ensisheim today, although visitors in the intervening centuries chipped off all but 56 kg (123 pounds) of its original 127-kg mass. See you at the show!! Some additional information: TABLE RENTAL AND RESERVATION The number of dealer tables is limited to a total of 52 (currently accommodating about 45-60 dealers), not including the consignment room that accommodates 6 tables with display cases. The important reminder is that all tables are equal in size(160 x 80 cm). The price (per table, NOT per meter) has increased slightly, following the (surprising) suggestion by quite a number of dealers: 1 table = 155Euro, 2 tables = 300 euro, 3 tables = 430 euro. Please plan your own lighting if needed (strictly limited to 250 W/table !). All past dealers/guests have full priority to reserve their last year table(s). Those who did not come last year (2013) have lost their priority and will be considered “newcomers”. To date, ALL 52 TABLES ARE BOOKED ! Sorry for those who were late in reserving but my January warning was perfectly explicit on that point. Nevertheless a waiting list is now open, should some of you still wish to rent a table. To make this possible, I will need the full names of all accompanying persons as soon as possible, so we can write the corresponding badges in time. The 6 consignment display-cases will contain meteorites, tektites, impactites…from the following collections (list still open): GABELICA Zelimir (B), JACQUES Benoît (B), JAWERBAUM Eduardo (AR),SCHMITT-KOPPLIN Philippe (D), STEHLIK Harald (A), TURONE Oscar (AR), VERLOOVENGuy (B), WENGERT Sigrid (D). To avoid money transfer complications and bank fee, we ask that you pay the table rental in cash. Tables are to be paid on Saturday morning between 7:30 and 9:30 to the treasurer, at the reception desk visible from the entrance door of the Regency building. When they pay, the dealers must wear (or ask for) their badge. Since we do not require pre-payment, it would be very fair if, in case of cancellation, you notify us enough in advance so that we can rent your space to those who are on a waiting list. People without badges are not considered dealers, cannot occupy tables, and are NOT allowed to sell meteorites elsewhere within the buildings or on the Regency square. Re: [meteorite-list] Fake Norway Rock
If it had been made public from day one before they built websites and made videos and spent nearly 2 years building the hype for max news publicity and promotion it would hAve been more believable. I find this entire thing ridiculous. I saw a video of some lights shining down of deer the other day, news was viral, I doubt it was aliens but hasn't been disproven either:) It seems to me that some people are invested in this story and will never admit that it is just a pebble from the chute packing. The video was not falsified, and is hardly phony. What it shows is plausibly explained by the meteorite hypothesis. Many, perhaps most meteorite falls are not preceded by a significant fireball, and even fewer by acoustics of any sort. I don't hear many people saying there's a reasonable chance this could be a meteorite. I didn't even hear much of that early on. Only that nothing obviously excludes this from being a meteorite. That's a distinction well worth remembering. If this had been trivially rejected from the beginning, no analysis would have been performed, and that would be unfortunate. And that's getting real. Well one of the parachutists seems to think someone at NASA did debunk it, since they posted a thank you for the help thanking NASA. The falling object is still consistent with a meteorite. What's been demonstrated is that the rock is very plausibly explained as something trapped in the parachute, and given the odds against capturing an image of a falling meteorite, that's by far the most likely possibility. But a meteorite remains a possibility, although not a likely one.
