I have a ~120 kg endpiece of Nantan, cut by Robert Ward ~4 years ago, looks
better than my cut Gibeon which shows some rust in Tucson, Nantan flawless.
I will have many nice pieces of this Nantan in Ensisheim/St Marie next month.

FWIW- I think that NANTAN get's a bad rap just from how old the fall is, and
there is typically a lot of external rust and terrestrialization after 500
some-odd years. Lawrencite disease doesn't seem to be a real problem with
them from what I have seen.

Re: [meteorite-list] Nantan rusters (Was: Widmanstatten Pattern on the outside?)

2011-05-11 Thread drtanuki
Anita and List,
The correct name spelling for Nantan in Hanyu Pinyin (commonly called just
Pinyin) is Nandan.

Hanyu Pinyin was adopted in Communist Mainland China in 1958 as the standard
form of romanization. When in China spell it like the Chinese!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinyin

Nandan References:
http://en.cnki.com.cn/Article_en/CJFDTOTAL-HJSU199208007.htm

If I worked at I suppose that I could find 2 or 3 more spellings using various
systems of romanization schemes. IF you are going to do research you will have
to use both Nandan and Nantan to find the literature.

Best Regards, Wu Xun-Ci (Dirk Ross) ...Tokyo

Re: [meteorite-list] Nantan, not garbage

2007-02-14 Thread Fredmeteorhall
Hello Howard and fellow meteorite collectors:
I agree with Michael Blood, not all Nantan are rusters or garbage. Out of
all the many hundreds of meteorites that I have collected over some 14 years,
one of my favorite slices is a 20.5 inch long by 13.5 inch high slice of
Nantan. I did have to treat it with Bill Mason's rust prevention kit, and
re-etch
it shortly after buying it. This Nantan has stayed quite stable, mounted on a
wall for many years now. It is gorgeous.
I also have a large Nantan that almost split in two during flight, looks
something like a heavy iron butterfly, and it shows no rust while being kept
in one of my meteorite show cases for six or more years now, where I use VCI
emitters. Keep in mind that I live in Colorado where the air is usually
somewhat
dry.
High regards to all, Fred Hall

I have to say I really like that Palau Meteorite coin.
The farm scene with the meteorite is typical of how
many meteorites are found by farmers plowing the
field.
The obverse is not exactly meteorite related but since
its issued by a island nation appropriate I guess.
Poseidon sitting between a mermaid or sea nymph and a
treasure chest with an outrigger canoe typical of use
in many pacific islands. The chest is probably
supposed to be filled with jewels but I would like to
think that the chest is filled with poseidons pearls
(That he hid when a man got engaged to be married and
a man had to find to give to his future wife or he
wouldent have an happy marriage). Poseidon actually
invented pearls for this reason and the only reason
why oysters produce pearls today is because they are
repaying a debt owed to poseidon.
A one ounce coin is more a standard size than two
ounces anyway and fits in more coin collectors album
holders and probably a better size to make a coin for
collectors and (Theoritically at least) cheaper to.
I wish that I had some to sell in munich and on ebay
(But I dont). It really looks like a particularly nice
coin.

I actually had a 4 kilo Nantan individual for about 8 months and it held up
much better than some of my Campos.
The best thing about Nantan is how cheap they are.

Good luck and get yourself a Dehumidifier to control the humidity in the
room that your meteorites are kept in.

I buy two nantans when they are verry popular on eBay. They have inside
healthy iron with few milimeters weathered layer outside. After cutting
they not rusting. I have them in my workshop only once oiled with balistol
and nothing happend.
Polished surface have no rust, only from outside layer from time to time I
see a drop of rusty water on it.
Maybe I have any kind of new nantans ?
Anyway its alvays some luck, some preservation skills maybe.
The same we can scream that Campo rust like hell or dronino is
self-destruction meteorite :)) but I not observe this.

Ofcourse some meteorites rust more some less, but dont make problems bigger
that they are :))

Hi, Tett:
Nice to know a guy who knows Taiwan! I will need to fly to Hong Kong

with this. Here are China's Rock Research Center's link(China government) ,
but they only have Simple Chinese edition homepage could read(no English):
http://geodb.gig.ac.cn/old_www/aero/myright2.htm
The reader only need to type Province name or Meteorite name in Simple

location. It is nice to me, but it has never report in meteorite mailing
list when most of people don't understand Chinese or Most of Chinese don't
know meteorites at all! Although we know different types of iron meteorite
has different kinds widemanns pattern but we must be confusing with Nantan
when those sellers(China farmers) did not want to tell anybody truth about
their found out area in Business! Here, I translate it into English for
Chinese provincation:
25 fell records in GuanXi Province(Nantan iron meteorite's Province)
totally

Old location in new place name now

1871.9.17
 Guey Shian
 GuanXi Province Guey County

I think that is why there are some different types oxidized iron

Dear Lee Shen Sheng and List Members:
Welcome to someone from Taiwan. I have lived in
Taiwan for 16 years and now Japan for 8.
Few Taiwanese or Chinese collect tektites/meteorites
or research them. There is only one researcher that I
know at Academica Sinica in Taipei. I have donated
several to the Taiwanese Geological Survey and one
museum in Taiwan.
A few customers are aware of magic tektites, Dzi
beads (`Tien Ju` magic agate beads reputedly from
Heaven(99.999 are made in Taiwan and are Fakes) and
sky metal amulets (also fake, reputedly to be made
from metal meteorites); but the collectors are only
interested because they believe they contain
protective powers..as they were told by the
sellers in order to sell them.
If anyone is ever in this part of the world look me
up or if you need help in Asia please ask. There are
two Taiwan meteorites but they have both been lost.

Roman and others,

This guy has it backwards. Selling a tektite as a Nantan makes no sense. You
should always sell true tektites with a descriptive type name like
Indochinites, and on occasion sell the Nantans as tektites...not the other
way around.

Selling a Nantan as a Nantan is a real loser these days...at least call it a
meteorwrong like Hematite to get a decent buck or two($). Telling them it's
going to the good of the IMCA also helps I hear. ;)

gobble, gobble

Sounds weathered Nantan to me, they are nearly shale
some times, and if you are trying to etch shale, it sure
wouldn´t etch.
Have several better Nantans, only with some 1 mm rust,
and they are pure FeNi inside and also etch ok. But if the
whole specimen (also inside) is rusted, it´s normal, it can
not be etched.
take care,

Re: [meteorite-list] Nantan Question: references online

2002-02-10 Thread Piper R.W. Hollier

The full text of the two 1994 Meteoritics articles mentioned by Bernd is
available online at the NASA-ADS web site as pdf documents:

Yau et al.:
http://adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/nph-data_query?bibcode=1994Metic..29..864Ylink_type=ARTICLEdb_key=AST

Chen Wang:
http://adsabs.harvard.edu/cgi-bin/nph-data_query?bibcode=1994Metic..29..886Clink_type=ARTICLEdb_key=AST

These are rather large objects, approx. 1.5 MB and 0.5 MB, and will take a
while to download for those with slow modem connections.

If the long URLs are a problem, go the the ADS query form:

http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abstract_service.html

...and enter:

chinese meteorite

...in the Enter Title Words field, choose AND as the Combine with:
option and click the Send Query button at the top of the form. With a
little patience and cleverness you will be able to navigate your way to the
full text of the articles from the list of links which will be returned
from your query.

Walter Branch, are you reading this? There is interesting material about
human casualties and structural damage in the Yau et al. article, if you
haven't already seen it!

Best wishes to all,

Hi Greg and List,

You won't find it in M. Grady's Catalogue because this information
cannot be ascertained. I once heard about reports which are said to
exist in the archives of Nandan County about a fall that occurred in
1516, sometime in May. But it wasn't before 1958 that people in
China became aware of this historical record. I don't know if that
is true but, at least, that's the date we find in the Catalogue.

Buchwald doesn't mention Nantan and Wasson doesn't either. There
is an article in Meteoritics 29-6, 1994 on Chinese meteorite falls but
there is no mention of Nantan and 1521:

YAU K. et al. (1994) Meteorite Falls in China and Some Ralated
Human Casualty Events (Meteoritics 29-6, 1994, 864-871).

In the same issue of Meteoritics, there is another article and the
authors do mention Nantan as a IIICD iron but they also give the
same date (1958) that you find in the Catalogue:

CHEN Y. and WANG D. (1994) An Update of a Catalog of
