That has to be one of the most impossible questions of the past 1000 years.
The oldies radio station here in Cleveland has the top 500 songs or something
like that, as voted by people. For the past few years... that one some from
the movie Ghost has been number one by the Everly Brothers, so maybe that's
one. Or maybe the people down under are considering decent music only.
Gaslight records in melbourne is running a competition and the prize
is 3 cd's from their top 20 (which would be pretty good).

THe aim. To guess as close to how the staff responded on the following
 question:

What are the best 5 songs of the last 1000 years?

Well, someone at my house against all better judgement sugested that
maybe 'Happy Birthday to you' was one of them. I argued with the
culprit fruitessly.

I just picked up

elf::gulf bore waltz by the band home.

I am liking thus far, and would definitely recommend to fans of built
to spill's PFNO. Does anyone know anything else about this band?
The only reason I ordered the cd (from JETSET) was because it was
described as

"built to spill playing dark side of the moon on the millenial
new years eve" and I was trying to find a bridge between me and my
flatmate who is a prog rock fanatic. I got him listening to whenever
you see fit, but he didn't really like long drive. That's all he
would listen to. but he's slowly coming around - we do a radio show
punk vs prog in melbourne. anyway - home what do you know?

I smoke/drink and smoke pot as well. And the strange thing is I like
a long drive as a smoking pot album as well, although I prefer
whenever you see fit. nmh's aeroplane/sea is also kinda cool, but a
bit depressing.
L.

I smoke cigarettes. I drink. I used to smoke down a lot in high school
and occasionally drop acid. After my first year of college I pretty
much quit that shit. Pot started to make me paranoid. As for sports, I
pretty much hate them all. Minus tennis.

Here's my 2 or so cents:
Never took a hit, sniff, inject whatever. I smoked for 10 days about 7 or so
years ago, (in the seventh grade). I drink at weddings mostly and have never
gotten to experience the sheer pleasure of a self-induced hangover, (or any
hangover for that matter). (Sportswise, skiing and tennis [spectator and
participator]. None of the 'jock sports' except for the occassional Indians
  game).

So far from this list we have 6 people who do use, 3 who don't and 1
who did but doesn't anymore. I'm still getting outside information
and shall post the full results later

okay, this might seem like a completely stupid/pointless idea to some of
you...but i was wondering if anyone would be interested in putting together a
modest mouse "tribute" tape of sorts...i know there are a lotta musicians on
this list, so i was thinking that people could record themselves doing mm
songs, and then send them to me to mix onto a tape. then i could copy and
send the tapes to anybody who wants one...i think it would be purty interestin
if enough people wanna make the effort...

It has worked quite well on the pavement list - they are up to their
third tape. I only got the first one, but it was pretty good. It's
more of a laugh than anything, but sometimes you may just get a gem.

alright...ive gotten more than twenty emails from kids saying they wanna
contribute to the tape. i think that we need to make a cut-off
point...otherwise theres not gonna be enough room on the tapes.

and are we setting a deadline for when all of the tapes need to be sent?

i also think that there should be a few more people dubbing and sending the
tapes...cos, being a full time college student, i dont have the time to record
and send fifty+ tapes. any volunteers?

Don't stop people from sending tapes. Don't discourage creativity.
Just say "the first tape will only have the first 90 minutes of music
that I get, on it" and maybe you'll get enough to make you
consider doing another...

ok. i don't live in the west and i can't help you about yr trip, but i
just wanted to say that i'd kill to be you. also, yr message kind of

i'll explain: i am, as well, a 17 year old girl, but i'm stuck in
KENTUCKY. yeah. ok. modest mouse was here about 2 years ago, but i
didn't see them cuz i couldn't get to louisville. the only "indie" type
shows i've been to were in athens, georgia, and cincinnati (pavement and
sonic youth respectively) so i have to Really Travel to see the indie
rock. and yes, the crowds at both of those shows were actually pretty
sucky. sometimes i'd kill to have some pretentious 20something indie
people around, because there is One other person in this town who is
into the music i am. i'm not trying to undermine you, cuz i can see
that it's annoying to be around those pretentious indiefans all the
time, but please, remember you have the music at least, and appreciate
 it.

anyway. i've often thought the west would be a good place to go and see
all the good bands and all...but check out tour dates, and see how many
good bands entirely skip the west in favor of the east (they skip the
 south too).

so. sorry if i've offended you or anything. i just wanted to say that.

bands they saw and who they hung out with; and the ones who are younger just
slump and sway to the music and wear glasses because being a nerd is cool

just standing around having a few drinks, a few tokes from the dolphin bong,

me realize how lucky we are to know such great music, and how we just seem

Ok, mr educated. explain how the sovereignty of the individual

Don't get me wrong, I am an anarchist that believes in self
determination - but you have to take into account that we are
communal in some aspects. I am not advocating some kind of communism,
just recognition of the facts: like that it is easy for men to be
libertarian, but women have more of an ethic of care regards
themselves, their offspring, and the community. Libertarianism cannot
and does not address these issues at all.
