Fellow birders, The MnDNR Nongame Wildlife Program is conducting the first statewide breeding bird population assessment of Red-necked Grebes in 2008. [mou] Chat Refound
The Yellow-breasted Chat reported yesterday (by Madeleine Linck) at Baker's Park Reserve (Orono, Hennepin County) was easily relocated today at 12:20pm. He was heard and seen in the same location: east of the bike trail at the first point where you can see CR 19 running parallel to the trail. He was singing away in the low shrubs that hugs a marsh, then flew south, where I could hear him through the deciduous woods while leaving. Please note that, from the parking lot, it is about a mile-long walk. If you need directions, please e-mail. Other interesting birds seen/heard: -Blue-winged Warblers (1-2, singing on territory?) -Olive-sided Flycatcher (1 near the chat) -Black-billed Cuckoo (briefly heard south of the chat site) Not a bad way to end the last day of school... [mou] Blue Grosebeak Scott County
At 11:00 this AM at Louisville Swamp, had a 5 second look at a Blue Grosbeak. From the parking area take the trail out of the north end of the parking lot going west. It was east of where the tail splits where the Kentucky Warbler has been seen. There was a sign in the field on the south side that read What's Going On ? . It was 25-30 yards off the trail in the shrubs just east of this sign. [mou] Red-necked Grebe and young
Greetings: Kirsten and I birded west of Faribault this morning to the marsh on the north side of Highhway 12, at Independance Avenue. Kirsten discovered a grebe disappearing in the grass near the road at the side of the marsh. We waited a bit and then saw a female EARED GREBE as it swam out into the water, followed by EIGHT little grebes about 4-5 days old. Around the marsh , in the water and in some trees were 25 GREAT EGRETS East of there on Highway 12 and north on Highway 171 to Highway 38, jog east to Garfield. A mile or so north was a group of Canada Geese and one goose had EIGHT 1/3rd grown goslings. Forest and Kirsten Strnad Faribault, Mn. -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... [mou] Carlos Avery today
At Carlos Avery this morning there was a flock of 11 dunlins at pool 9, and two ravens in a tree along the road at the northwest corner of pool 5. The ravens flew off with a wonderful gronk, gronk, gronk. Cranes everywhere, including one group of 46 in a wet meadow. Phil Shively St. Paul
