Re: [Mpls] If an antiwar res is germane to city issues...

2003-01-28 Thread Fredlud
The National Endowment for the Arts directly supports Arts organizations in
Minneapolis, in turn supporting and enhancing our quality of life and
cultural well being. Below are some of the grants that have been awarded so
far this year to MPLS arts organizations in MPLS.

I did have listed what these grants were issued for but there are so many of
them supporting or community that they pushed the size of the file over the
10 K limit to post here.

I do not see the same kind of cultural benefit coming from the war on Iraq.

GO DON!!! Re: [Mpls] Third ward race

2003-01-27 Thread Fredlud
I have purposefully stayed out of the 3rd ward race after the dismal showing
that Shane Price had in the primary.

I have been torn about who I would support in the Feb 3rd election.

I am extremely active in the Sheridan Neighborhood, where Olin Moore has
lived for three years, but I did not know who the hell he was till he decide
to run for the 3rd Wards seat. Supporters for Don Samules are all over the
map, from Natalie Johnson Lee and Shane Price to Barb Johnson, Barett Lane
and Valdis Rosentals, I am wary about support from such a wide group of
political strata.

I want to thank Phyllis Kahn for helping me make up my mind.

As one of the plaintiffs that have filed suit over the redistricting ward
boundaries I do not see how an election can happen using these disputed
boundaries when citizens in MPLS have not had our day in court about the
legalities of these new boundaries.

I firmly join the ranks to 3rd warders standing behind Don Samules and I urge
all others to do the same.

GO DON!!!
tom taylor
Sheridan Neighborhood

The situation is a mess and is made messier if there is no election
until 2005. My preference, besides my judgement on the quality of the
candidates, is to elect someone who lives in both the old and the new
ward. I agree that everyone should have appropriate representation as
soon as possible, which is why I want an election in 2003, a position
supported by Olin Moore and avoided by Samuels (to my knowledge). I also
want council members to care about the whole city (and even the state
and the nation) and I take nothing away from Samuels for the good work
he has done in his neighborhood.

[Mpls] a question for O. Moore and D. Samules

2003-01-10 Thread Fredlud
If folks from each campaign could get this question to the candidates for the
3rd Ward council seat I would be grateful.

There is movement in MPLS to introduce and pass a resolution in the city
council to opposing those parts of the USA PATRIOT and Homeland Security
Acts, and associated orders and directives that threaten our Constitutionally
guaranteed Civil Rights.

If Don Samules or Olin Moore are elected will they support such a resolution
and work to get it passed.

I'd venture to guess that members of any political party expect that their

Back in the early 1990s there were planks in the DFL platform that condemned
the use of bovine growth hormone (rBGH) in dairy production. When rBGH was
approved and many of us worked at the capitol and got the right for MN
dairies to label their products a rBGH-free (one of only about 5 states that
got that right) I learned a valuable lesson as far as a party member towing
the bottom line of the DFL.

A man who I had seen many times on Almanac representing the DFL party was at
the capitol lobbying to get the bill killed. I was SHOCKED, in my naivete,
that a public representative of a political party would work against the
tenets of that party. I do not recall anyone asking him to find another
party with a more congenial line to tow. I do not know if he is still a
member of the DFL party but he is sometimes referred to these days as a DFL
political consultant.

[Mpls] DEVELOPMENT AT 24TH AND CENTRAL

2003-01-03 Thread Fredlud
The following email was sent to me by 3rd Ward Council Aide, Becky Hunter.
She has given me permission to send it on to this list.

Sheridan Neighborhood

MEMO TO NEIGHBORHOODS REGARDING DEVELOPMENT AT 24TH AND CENTRAL

We met yesterday with Loren Brueggeman from Sherman Associates, the
proposed developers for the 2300 block of Central Avenue. Loren advised us
that the development proposal will now be limited to the property currently
owned by US Bank. Further, the proposal will no longer include a Cub Food
store or any other large grocery store. We were advised that the proposal
will include a mix of housing and retail and further that the developers
remain committed to proceeding with the neighborhood process and are very
interested in proceeding with a development of the US Bank site.

You may recall that our guidelines for potential development were that the
project respect the urban and pedestrian nature of the corridor, respond to
neighborhood issues and concerns and finally that there would be no public
subsidy for a large grocery store. Mr. Brueggeman advised us yesterday that
due largely to the cost of acquisition that the development of the entire
block for a retail/housing development with a Cub Food store is not
financially feasible without public subsidy. As a result, he is moving
forward with a different proposal in an effort to satisfy the guidelines for
the development.

The meetings previously scheduled for discussion of this development will
proceed. The Holland Neighborhood Improvement Association will hold a
meeting at Edison High School at 7 pm on January 9. The Northeast Community
Development Association will hold two informational meetings about the
development: January 13 at 7 pm at the senior high rise at 1815 Central
Avenue and January 21 at 7 pm at the Salvation Army at 2727 Central Avenue.
We hope to see you at one of these upcoming meetings.

 Sincerely,

This bicycle was a Raleigh Tourist. This 28 inch wheel bike, with metal
linkage to operate the brakes, is a proud throw back to when the UK ruled
bicycle production. I am an avid collector of these bikes, and other older
machines. I cringe when I think of sticking one of those licenses onto a
frame. It cannot do much for the value of the bike.

By the way, where are the bike racks if we cannot park at street signs and
parking meters?

2002-02-13 Thread Fredlud

Neal Blanchett asked for the location of Camp Coldwater spring. It's
shown right here:

It is also shown on the Preserve Camp Coldwater Coalition's website at
http://www.preservecampcoldwater.org/.

It is in the right frame if you scroll down just a bit.

If your browser does not support frames go to
http://www.preservecampcoldwater.org/main2.htm and it is about half way down.

[Mpls] Sustainable Design and Our Public Spaces

2002-01-11 Thread Fredlud

GREEN ARCHITECTURE 101

Ever heard of Green Architecture and wondered what it is? When you think of
sustainable design do you only think of solar panels? Did you know that
environmental stewardship is more than just about saving the environment,
that it can save money too? The Sheridan Neighborhood Organization (SNO) will
be holding a public meeting to learn about sustainable design and how we can
apply it to our public buildings.

On Saturday, January 12, 2001 at 1:00 p.m. SNO will be holding a public forum
at Eastside Neighborhood Services, 1700 2nd Street N.E. Minneapolis, to learn
about sustainable design and its impact when used in developing our public
spaces.

Corey Brinkema, from e4 partners, will lead a discussion focusing on the
Pierre Bottineau Library and the aspects of Green Architecture that are
currently proposed. We will also explore additional features that can be
incorporated in similar projects and what benefits they bring.

Mr. Brinkema is cofounder of e4 partners and developer of the nation's first
speculatively-built green industrial facility, the internationally recognized
Phillips Eco-Enterprise Center (PEEC) in South Minneapolis. The PEEC (also
known as the Green Institute) is a model for sustainable design; it uses 40%
less energy than comparable buildings, truly values the health of its
occupants and leaves a much smaller footprint on the environment. Mr.
Brinkema brings experience in diverse sectors of the environmental and energy
industries, both in the U.S. and internationally. He holds an MBA from the
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and a BA from Dartmouth College.

Please spread the word.

rules for campaign finance reporting are not on line and since dreaming is

I seem to remember that the first stance I heard from the city regarding the

pipe in city water to keep it going.

Someone had posted earlier that in St. Paul the endorsement of the Stonewall
caucus in did not depend on holding to the DFL endorsement process but in
MPLS it is a criteria for endorsement.

Is this true, and if so, does anyone know why this is?

It seems that the discussion about the 6th Ward convention is missing
what should be the big story. Besides the longstanding questions of the
emphasis on caucus system because of the small number of participants,
it appears that the 6th Ward convention has now raised questions about
whether the process itself is even open or democratic. I have now heard
from a few corroborating sources that even though Dean Zimmerperson was
nominated by one or more delegates, the leadership refused to allow him
to speak! So anyone who does not meet the DFL party hack purity test is
not allowed to compete for the DFL endorsement? I will not rush to
judgment since i was not there, but i am anxious to hear explanations.
