Re: [nfc-l] Unknown Hunterdon NJ Night Flight Call

2012-04-23 Thread Mike Farmer
Yes! I have been looking at this great wind map since Chris alerted us to it.
The last 1O days there have been extended days in which most of the eastern
US, and Texas, had north winds and there has been a near complete collapse in
recording data in Austin during those times. And like you, I noticed tonight
the correlation with the center of the country. It’s better data than just
getting the local hourly wind data for Austin. It will be interesting to see
what Austin recorders get tonight.

This wind map seems to be a great tool and is fun to watch in relation to the
migration. Will this website last? It seems to be created as a promotion.

Is anyone paying attention to the wind map and using it to predict/ or post
correlate their flights? It looks like a good shoot straight up the center of
the country tonight.

I haven’t gotten good pattern out here yet, but I have this as my default home
page so I can look at it every morning at least.

Re: [nfc-l] Unknown Hunterdon NJ Night Flight Call

2012-04-22 Thread Christopher T. Tessaglia-Hymes
Good call on this one Michael and Andy. I completely agree, having now reviewed
the samples provided at Steve Kelling's flight call website and some other
resources (thanks for pointing that out again!). I've only heard Virginia Rail
overhead at night producing their "kid-dick" calls. I had noticed that the
frequency was high, but it seemed within the realm of possibility for the
similar Red-headed Woodpecker NFC, but, I'll have to go with Virginia Rail on
this one, too.

Upon comparing the two in Raven, it seems that RHWO does indeed have more
harmonics, is lower in frequency, and the RHWO call has connected modulation,
giving it a thicker "churrr"-like quality, while Virginia Rail "kicker" call
seems to have very few harmonics (none, except perhaps at the onset?), is
slightly higher in frequency, and has disconnected modulation, giving it a
dryer "reedy"-like quality.

Thanks for posting the sound, Rob. This was a good learning experience for me.
I hope to record more this springtime (Etna, NY), so perhaps will encounter my
own Virginia Rail call in the coming days/weeks.

Good night listening!

Sincerely,
Chris T-H

Wow Michael and Andy, thanks for pointing me to Virginia Rail. I doubt I'd

The clip is a little curtailed, but to me this is somewhat reminiscent of some calls of the Great Crested Flycatcher.

RE: [nfc-l] Unknown Hunterdon NJ Night Flight Call

2012-04-21 Thread Rob Fergus

Chris, the spectograms I can find of the Red-headed Woodpecker call seem to
have a couple layers of harmonics, whereas this just has the one line--perhaps
because the bird was at a distance from the mic it didn't catch it all? I'm
intrigued by this possibility...not least because these are pretty scarce
around here and if I can document their migration that would be cool--as well
as a nice addition to the yard list :-)

Rob,

This sounds like a call that is within the realm of variation for the night
flight call of Red-headed Woodpecker. At least, that's my first impression.
Thoughts?
