  mars
 A very nice subject to discuss here at pdf/a conference with Leonard Rosenthal
 (why use a pdf format for archiving, and in the same moment push mars?
 mars can be  XML-PDF-XML)
 But I did'nt want to do that.
 I have talkd last year in italy with Olaf Drümmer, he said the mars is
 still an experiment .
  From my point of view xml is better for long term archiving.

xml is to bulky for an output format (apart from the slower parsing), so
  i wonder if it is that good as format for final products; of course
xml may be handier to manipulate afterwards (which is something we
somethines need to do with third party inclusions) but that can be
crippled by encriptions, compression etc; in my opinion xml should be
readable and this somewhat conflicts with compression and binary chunks
(fonts) and encryption etc .. in that case one gets angle brackets
instead of objects and the rest stays the same (a bit comparable with
svg, which just packages huge amounts of path info in attributes (kind
of rediculous to use attributes for that); xml is nice, but nor for
everything

we'll see

Re: [NTG-context] mplib undefined commands

2008-04-12 Thread Hans Hagen
Hi Mojca

 I have modified the gnuplot module a bit, and stumbled upon:

 1.) the need for
  \ifx\savebuffer\undefined \else \savebuffer[...]\fi
 which has been expected

 2.) undefined command
  \forceMPTEXcheck{put_text}

ok, i will add a fake

 I have now used a wrapper to skip that line in LuaTeX (btw: what's the
 suggested \if clause or \beginNOLUATEX to check for luatex/mkiv?) Does
 it make sense to define \let\forceMPTEXcheck\empty in mkiv perhaps?

best make a

yourmodule.tex
yourmodule.mkii
yourmodule.mkiv

and in the tex file adds:

\loadmarkfile{yourmodule}

 3.) undefined command \obeyMPlines. I actually forgot why I needed it,
 but according to the comment:
 \obeyMPlines % - no longer a problem
 \def\obeyedline{}% - thanks to this
 I simply commented out the first line and hoped for no problems in mkii

ok, another fake

 4.) It seems to work without problems now, except for one tiny detail
 that I get in the final PDF.
 [do we need TeXtexts in MkIV]

 What is that supposed to mean?

well, that everything now can be 'textext'

 I need to admit that I have the following piece of code in the module
 (in case that matters). Maybe I'm the only one who uses it, so if you
 have any idea how to modify the macros to make
 \sometxt[gp][iwona,14pt]{text} work in mkiv, I will happily drop the
 old code/replace it for mkiv.

hm, so \sometxt is not working? i thought that i tested it (maybe not
... too much to test)

 \long\def\redofiltersometxt[#1]%
 {\doifnextcharelse[{\reredofiltersometxt[#1]}{\redodofiltersometxt[#1]}}

 \long\def\redodofiltersometxt[#1]#2%
   {\increment\txtcounter
\TeXtext[#1]\txtcounter{#2}%
\filtersometxt}

 \long\def\reredofiltersometxt[#1][#2]#3%
   {\increment\txtcounter
\TeXtext[#1]\txtcounter{\switchtobodyfont[#2]\strut#3}%
\filtersometxt}

i think that we have it in the core

anyhow, just collects what does not work

(btw, i fixed something in textext ... i used to work only for code
passed as mpgraphic, but now it works also with libraries and so)

That is just a weirdness in viewcvs, too bad. Here is better link

   http://www.luatex.org/svn/tags/beta-0.25.2/manual/luatexref-t.pdf

 The manual describes a lua interface.

(next paragraphs written as the MPlib maintainer)

Real API documentation will be provided once I am past the alpha
release stage. At the moment, I do not trust the API enough to expose
it to anything except controlled environments (lua mplib, newmpost)

 Isn't mplib a dll under windows?

It is possible to build the unix version as a .so because support for
that comes from autofoo automatically, but that is not yet officially
supported: debugging dynamic libraries is harder than debugging static
code.

MPlib could become a dll on windows eventually, but first someone will
have to explain to me how to create a windows dll (and I vastly prefer
a solution that does not involve me having to pay Microsoft any money).
I have exactly zero knowledge in that area and do not have a Windows
installation either: the one and only XP machine here is my wife's
gaming machine and that is strictly offlimits to me.

Future versions of luatex and mpost itself (and potential other texlive
programs) will almost certainly remain statically linked because that is
much more convenient for us as maintainers.

Best wishes,
Taco

[NTG-context] two easy xml-questions

2008-04-12 Thread Thomas A. Schmitz
Hi gang,

speaking of xml... I have two easy questions, but can't find an
answer. It's about tweaking the pdf-output I get:

1. How do you add an additional hyphenation to a word? How would I
enter the equivalent of super\-duper in an xml-file? I tried
superaddhyphen;duper with this definition:
\defineXMLentity[addhyphen]{\-}

in my environment, but this doesn't seem to work.

2. Similar question: how to prevent an unwanted ligature, esp. in
German? In TeX, I write Kauf{}laden. What would be a good way to do
this in xml? I was thinking of Kaufnolig;laden and
\defineXMLentity[nolig]{\kern0pt}

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Thank's for your answers Hans and Taco.

I'm going to try to explain this in english… hum ;o)

I'm in contact with François Bon who launch 3 month ago this :
http://www.publie.net
It's a publisher of contemporary texts.
Since there's not a standard for numerical texts and lot of different
devices (a tabular [1]) you can download various formats on this site
:
— pdf (landscape style for computers) ;
— small pdf for ephone ;
— mobipocket prc [2] ;
— htm ;
— xml.

(I wich they use the epub openformat from idpf [3] too).

They use something like adobe indisgn for this (and maybe other things
for xml / html).
The result is not so good (lack of nbsp !)… it's a lot of work. They
do a lot « by hands ».

For my point of view ConTeXt (or an xml format ?) is the solution :
one low-level file and an automatisation process for all the other
files.

Except for some complex poetry, texts are « simple » (no columns, no
images…). On publie.net [4] you can read a few pages of all texts (pdf
using issuu [5]) and download the all texts in « public domain »
section [6], but only pdf and rtf formats.

What do you think ? Am I wrong ? Is the use of indisgn the right way ?

Best regards,
Olivier.

Re: [NTG-context] LuaTex error attempt to index global 'lang' (a nil value)

2008-04-12 Thread Roland
@Mojca, I found that /usr/texbin was pointing to a missing directory,
so this caused the problem mentioned below. I took /usr/texbin out of
the $PATH and replaced it with /usr/local/texlive/2007/bin/i386-darwin
-- this lets luatools --selfupdate run correctly:

LuaTools | to be replaced old script
/usr/local/texlive/2007/bin/i386-darwin/luatools
LuaTools | checking new script
/usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/scripts/context/lua/luatools.lua
LuaTools | old script content replaced by new content
LuaTools |
LuaTools | runtime: 0.056 seconds

But the old problem still persists.

@Hans, I pressed enter when the original error occurs and this just
gives me one more line before the script stops:

l.3174

@Taco, I think my core-ref.tex contains the same as yours:

[NTG-context] Footnotes set outside of columns when using columnsets

2008-04-12 Thread Elliot Clifton
Hi,

When using columnsets is it possible to have footnotes placed at the
bottom of the page rather than in columns? I searched the
documentation and haven't found a way to do this.

Minimal examples.

Using columnsets:

\definecolumnset[twocolumn][n=2]

\starttext
\startcolumnset[twocolumn]
\dorecurse{4}{\input knuth \footnote[footnote]{footnote}\par}
\stopcolumnset
\stoptext

It produces footnotes in columns which isn't what I want. The
behaviour I want is the that produced by this example using
\startcolumns:

\starttext
\startcolumns
\dorecurse{4}{\input knuth \footnote[footnote]{footnote}\par}
\stopcolumns
\stoptext

I'd like to be able to take advantage of the addition feature offered
by using columnsets but need the footnotes to be set at the bottomof
the page outside of the columns. Advice on how to do this would be
much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Elliot

For linux the binary should be OK, the proper version at least (the

I didn't test it though. One question: does your first-setup update
bin/texlua as well? Old texlua might be the culprit as well. Only
guessing ...

Concerning the broken live: I haven't touched live since the last
conference, and I guess that Arthur just recompiles luatex every now
and then, and probably didn't touch it in the last few days (we should
adapt the live to use the minimals instead of tex live). So the two
are completely unrelated (shame on us).

I meant that there could be two luatex in your $PATH, and the wrong one
could be used (that happens with me sometimes). You are running this
command from /win/context/bin (I am assuming that luatex lies in this
directory). Do you get the same output when you run it from another
directory?

Another item one could make interactive is the ISBN number; contrary to
the DOI and the URL there is no true canonical place, however, WorldCat
(as used below) is in my opinion a sensible choice. (WorldCat is
operated by OCLC, in which 60,000 libraries from 112 countries are members.)

 texlive programs) will almost certainly remain statically linked
 because that is much more convenient for us as maintainers.

If there is more than one program, which is using mplib, you have to
update all theses programs, if you make some mplib changes.

But I think that a dll could very much boost the metapost usage. It
would than be very easy to write third party software.

[NTG-context] Adding custom key/value pairs

2008-04-12 Thread Rory Molinari
Hi,

I'm new to ConTeXt and decided to teach myself a bit by resetting my
old thesis (originally done, many years ago, in LaTeX). As the purpose
is to teach myself ConTeXt rather than just have an electronic version
of the thesis I decided to try to do things the right way.

So, in setting the title page I followed the pattern shown on
Contextgarden here: http://wiki.contextgarden.net/Document_Titles.
That page shows how to define a nice \placetitle command with an
associated \setuptitle which allows us to define values for title,
subject, and date. However, I want also to be able to define values
for degree, subject, and committee (to follow the school-standard LaTeX
style file I had from all those years ago). I can't work out how to do
this.

Simply using a variable like \c!degree (to match the \c!title I found
in the example) doesn't work, as ConTeXt doesn't know about such a
control sequence. I was quite puzzled for a while but then it dawned
on me that the example I found on contextgarden works because the keys
it uses (for key/value pairs) are ones that are already defined in the
ConTeXt system: title, subject, date. My attempt fails because the
system doesn't know about degree, subject, and committee.

I tried defining a new variable with startvariables, but that didn't
appear to help.

So, my question: what do I need to do to define a new key that can be
used in a key/value pair?

Here's an example of what I tried:

\startvariables all
   degree: degree
\stopvariables

\definesystemvariable{tp}  % title page

\def\setuptitlepage{\dodoubleempty\dosetuptitlepage}

\def\dosetuptitlepage[#1][#2]%
   {\ifsecondargument
  \dodosetuptitlepage[#1][#2]%
\else
  \dodosetuptitlepage[\v!content][#1]%
\fi}

\def\dodosetuptitlepage[#1][#2]%
   {\def\dododosetuptitlepage##1%
  {\getparameters[\??tp##1][#2]}%
\processcommalist[#1]\dododosetuptitlepage}

\def\placetitlepage
   {\startalignment[\v!middle]
 \doattributes{\??tp\c!degree}\c!style\c!color\@@tpcontentdegree
 \stopalignment}

\setuptitlepage
   [\c!degree]
   [\c!style=\tfa,\c!color=]

\startfrontmatter
\placetitlepage
\stopfrontmatter

\starttext
\stoptext

Cheers,
Rory

I have a problem with your fix. As I just found out, with that fix, not
only the % in the bib/bbl are printed (as intended), but also the % in
the TeX file, i.e. all the sections I commented out now appear -
prefixed by a %.

PS: Your fix was:

% start fix
\unprotect
\def\dousepublications#1%

 {\readfile{#1.\f!bibextension}
 {\catcode`\%=12
  \showmessage\m!bib{4}{#1.\f!bibextension}}
 {\showmessage\m!bib{2}{#1.\f!bibextension

tex.print($\\sqrt{2}= .. math.sqrt(2) .. $)

 this is because \\ can mean anything, for instance it may expand to
 \par  or \crlf or ..

May be I do not understand this right, but I thought that '\' is luas
escape character and tex.print() returns '\' not '\\'. So TeX sees no
macro '\\' which could expand to whatever.

 there is a \luaescapestring primitive which catches things like
 quotes

Can you make a little example of usage?

 tex.print(\detokenize{$\sqrt{2}=} .. math.sqrt(2) .. $)

Could not find the definition of \detokenize.

I see that it is similar to an error that ZS had.

  But while ZS's problem was solved by updating, I'm installing for

What might be amiss? Thanks!
