I'm impressed if any math works at all in experimental. Hans and Taco
have just switched to OpenType math and the current state looks like a
nightmare to me. (You can take a look at char-def.lua, math-vfu.lua
and some other files. It all needs to be improved and fixed.)

Yes, the math in experimental is not working. see the attachment.

However, I have a document which uses
- Myriad Pro
- a lot of math
but I can use neither beta (failed to parse Myriad Pro) nor
experimental (cannot typeset math)

I use the nightly build version of LuaTeX provided by w32tex.

Ok, I'll investigate that. Is it also with overlay?

Yes, overlays are used to put text, graphics etc. behind the text.

You can use different backgrounds for a left/right page with
\setupbackgrounds[leftpage|rightpage][..,..=..,..]

Is the content for each topic short enough for one double page or
is it possible the content on a left page requires more space and
continues on the next left page?

The content is short enought because it is for leaflets. So, only
a front page, thoose two pages and a backpage.

In this case I would take care to spend more time in easy to use
interface with a few macros to write the content.

[NTG-context] XeTeX and/or LuaTeX?

2009-01-30 Thread J.A.J. Pater

I'm was planning to write my master thesis in XeLaTeX until I
discovered that ConTeXt can use the XeTeX engine.
I need to use a lot of Hebrew - so Right to Left typing - and some
linguistic glyphs and stuff.

But from the wiki I understand there are still some issues with
ConTeXt's XeTeX-awareness.

Like the bookmarks may result in some strangeness in certain documents
Can someone tell me what kind of strangeness?

And XeTeX can't use certain specials and other types of features
Can someone tell me what kind of specials and types of features?

And now on this list there is a lot of talk about LuaTeX and Mark IV.
So I wonder: Is it possible to use MarkIV and XeTeX engine at the same time?
And if not, why should (or shouldn't) I use MarkIV over XeTeX?

Thanks in advance,

Many features like dvi / metapost may produce strange result. you can
search the mailing list and you can find plenty of them.

Like Lua language programming, controling nodes/tokens. But writing a

no.

LuaTeX has more features for RTL than XeTeX because it's one of the

you could use both at the same time, but xetex uses mkii and luatex uses
mkiv

in principle mkii is frozen so new features and improvements will only
happen in mkiv

concerning bidi: luatex does this natively (based on omega/aleph code)
while xetex does it the etex way which has some limitations

(since mkiv/luatex is tested extensively in the oriental tex project it
probably makes more sense to use mkiv)

[NTG-context] new experimental

2009-01-30 Thread Hans Hagen

Hi,

the experimental branch of the garden distribution has a prelude to the
new math font subsystem

- less definitions, so faster (but some things might not yet work)

- unicode math (but mojca, aditya, taco and i are in the process of
checking and completing the definitions)

- faster startup time of mkiv as well as less memory usage

- using runtime virtual fonts which permits more math alphabets (as un
unicode) but not all are defined now (not all make sense)

since this is evolving, if you use experimental, you need to update on a
regular basis (mkiv as well as the luatex bin) but mojca keeps things
nicely in sync so that should be done automatically for lin/win/osx

Do not worry about bookmarks. You can probably ask Hans to fix it if
it doesn't work properly.

Can someone tell me what kind of specials and types of features?

I would not bother too much. One of the differences is that XeLaTeX
has very good high-level support for changing fonts. That one is
missing, but you can still do everything you need. In particular, if
you are writing your thesis, those few additional lines that you might
need for properly setting the font should not be a problem.

XeLaTeX also has some support for OpenType math, but you don't need that.

And now on this list there is a lot of talk about LuaTeX and Mark IV.
So I wonder: Is it possible to use MarkIV and XeTeX engine at the same time?
And if not, why should (or shouldn't) I use MarkIV over XeTeX?

Minus of Mark IV: it's a bit unstable; problems are fixed quickly, but
it's a bit annoying if your thesis doesn't compile one hour or day
before the deadline (when you do the final run before you print the
document and of course you have no backup of PDF). You can make sure
that this doesn't happen by keeping two versions of ConTeXt installed
just in case (one that you update and one that you don't).

Plus of Mark IV: it has a very powerful programming language in the
background. Fun to use (which could just as well be a minus if you
become interested in playing with it or in fixing the problems instead
of writing your thesis :) :) :) Very well supported.

In case that you don't need advanced MKIV features, you can, at least
in theory, use the same source to typeset the document with both XeTeX
and LuaTeX. For documents that are not too complex this is what I
usually do. If I stumble across a problem in one engine, there's still
a chance that the other engine will work properly.

I don't know if the moderator will approve of posting fonts.
But it can also be found on the web:

So the moderator can drop my last mail, it was to extensive anyway.
Installed on my computer [Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10]

I got the font working by adapting the ara-sty from

I also adapted the example from the above link (attached as test.tex).
I ran it with the minimals.

Issues I still have:

I don't like the font I get with \setlatin
I don't want every word on a new page
I don't have the faintest clue as to what I'm doing inside of heb-sty.

What's important for me is to use hebrew text inside of latin text.
I'd like to be able to do things like:

[NTG-context] How to capture a typeset page into a box instead of shipping it out

2009-01-30 Thread Kevin D. Robbins
Hi all,

I am looking for ideas of how to capture a typeset page (as it would appear
in the resulting pdf output) into a box instead of actually shipping it out
directly, if it is possible. I would like to take advantage of ConTeXt's
layout features including layers, otherwise I would just create the box with
\setbox.

My intent is to draw slides using all of ConTeXt's many layout features, but
capture the rendered slide in a box so I can use it either as a full page in
the presentation output or as a scaled image included as a figure in a full
text train the trainer document.

Thanks,

Kevin Robbins

Re: [NTG-context] new experimental

2009-01-30 Thread Yue Wang
Hi, Hans,
please test the following formulas. All of them come from my thesis,
and MKII typeset them right. MKIV produce the wrong result.
I am using the nightly build from w32tex since the luatex binary in
the minimals repository cannot generate the format correctly.

sure, you need to wait till mojca has synced both context and luatex

i also have a question; why can't i use different fonts in

\def\myCommand#1#2{{\ss\sc #1}{\rm\sc #2}{\ss\sc\bf #1}{\rm\sc\bf #2}}
\setuphead[part][command=\myCommand]

the font commands are simply ignored. I don't want to have to
resort to using numberstyle and textstyle.

You code works but the style and number/textstyle values act
as part of #1 and #2 and you have to set them to nothing to
get your own settings.

\setuphead[part][command=\myCommand,style=]
