[NTG-context] How to get line numbering to match block quote position?

I have some text that is a block quote, but also has line numbering:

            \stoplinenumbering
        \stopblockquote \stoptext
The line numbering is appearing in the left margin as if the text were not a 
block quote. How can I tell it to move the numbering closer to the text, since 
the text is not up against the margin, being block quote text?

to use pull quotes, I need to use the dimensions of the different 
elements to be typeset, before typesetting, in order to adapt the shapes 
of the flow accordingly.


So here is just a basic code to
1/ get the dimensions of an item A that will be typeset, before it is 
actually typeset
2/ use these dimensions to define a item B that should be typeset before 
item 1

3/ typeset of item B and finally item A


It is a quick and dirty solution.

Please, could you help me to have a more elegant solution

1/ to replace

 "width=\measure{FTitleW},"

by something more direct like

 "width=\GetDim{myframes}{FTitle}


2/ to replace

   context("\\definemeasure[#2W][" .. (n.width /65536)  .. "pt]")

   by a more "luametatexish" formulation

That is progress, Garulfo, and real progress! I'm sorry I have not been 
any help to you in achieving this... a bit beyond my skill set. But I 
have long regarded this particular 'feature' to be a quite important 
'missing' feature of ConTeXt, since I occasionally get requests from 
authors as to the possibility of including such pull quotes in 
multi-column presentations, and I have to tell them that to do so I need 
to use another program where that is more easily achieved.


So, I just wanted you to know that someone out there appreciates your 
efforts with this, one of many I am sure.

[NTG-context] Pull quote between two column - trial

Hi all,

hope you are all doing well.

I am still trying to display pull quote between two columns.

lmt_parshape is really helpfull.


I need to add a 1pt gap to make the left column behave correctly,
but the right column remains shifted one line below the intended one.

Question1: any clue ?

Question2: is there a way to use the columnset system to produce a 
similar output ?

No, I had already tried that. It places the subentry at the top of the 
list of subentries, not in its correct alphabetical order. Using the 
example below, I assume you meant (I am including text before and after):


The \index[Plenary+periti]{Plenary Council+{\it periti} (experts)} group 
comprises 10 members.


There are nine subentries altogether, and quite a number under 'p', like 
\index{Plenary Council+preparations for}. The italicised /periti /should 
come just before the latter (preparations for) but, using the double key 
above it comes first in the list. The same happens with the subentry 
surrounded by single quotes. It too comes first in the list if I use a 
double key. So clearly it is the fact that there is formatting ({\it 
something}) or quotes ({‘word’}) in a subentry that causes the problem, 
and I am wondering how to overcome this.

Well done Adam - or should I say well read in the Wiki! For all my 
reading of it I still hadn't cottoned on to that. There are several of 
these cases, but I have been able to fix them all now. Thank you.


Any thoughts (but I'm pretty sure this isn't fully explained in the 
wiki) how I can get part of the index entry in italics and part normal? 
That might be a bit more difficult I think.

[NTG-context] registers, how to ignore quote marks

I have an issue that has been raised at least twice in this list but as 
far as I can see it has not received an answer. Perhaps someone can help 
with the following?


I have an index entry that has unicode quote marks either side: 
‘Innovative Beings’.  I need to retain those quote marks. If I put 
\index{‘Innovative’} then ‘Innovative’ is sorted under ‘ instead of 
under the letter I. How do I get my indexing to ignore the quote marks, 
at the very least the initial one?


My index setup at the moment is as follows:

\defineregister[index][compress=yes]

\setupregister[index][n=1]

\defineprocessor[special][style=italic]

The only hint I could gain from the wiki was that it might depend on 
using a method key in \setupregister, but I could not see which to use. 
Tried a few and got weird results.

[NTG-context] Quote mark missing from first paragraph in quotation when location=text

Hi,

I have some long dialogue that I'm trying to typeset and I want to use the
convention of repeating the open quotation mark on each paragraph of
continued dialogue. I know I can set this up by doing something like

\setupdelimitedtext[quotation][repeat=yes, middle=\upperleftdoublesixquote]

This works well, except in cases where the dialog starts in the middle of a
paragraph. By default \startquotation starts a new paragraph. I think the
way to suppress that is to set location=text, but when I try that I get the
odd effect that the first paragraph doesn't get quotes but the following
ones do. Minimal example below.

\setupdelimitedtext[quotation][repeat=yes, middle=\upperleftdoublesixquote,
location=text]
\starttext
Some text that's not part of the quotation.
\startquotation
\input knuth
\stopquotation
\stoptext

I’m on LMTX 2.08.04, Context version 2020.12.04 20:22

Any ideas?

writing a module, therefore manual reference is not feasible here.

Now I would like to auto generate a heavily customized table of contents
like the following text, which cannot be done by the stock \placecontent in
general, and put it into the preface:

   This book has 3 sections: foo, bar, and baz.

The text generation should be trivial with lua, but I don't know how such
forward reference of section names works. Could anyone help me with it?

When you use method=font context using a different rendering mechanism
for the quotation block without the optional argument.

4. When “method=font” is not present, protrusion for block quotations
   (\startblockquotation … \stopblockquotation) is greater than and not
   aligned with other protrusion.
5. When “method=font” is not present, protrusion for non-block
   quotations (\quotation{…}) is not done at all.

When you use the default method context puts the quotation marks
in a box which is only moved into the margin independant of protrusion.

6. With the older bibliography system, footnotes in citations in
   quotation blocks do not cause a halt in compilation.

7. With the older bibliography system, item 3 is still a problem, that
   is, method=font appears to be inimical to the left, right, and
   middle options for \startblockquotation without regard to the

I also note that the method=font option for \setupdelimited text 
appears to be incompatible with the left option for \startquotation. 
The document compiles, but [left] appears as part of the text and is 
not acted on (and similarly for right and middle).

Further testing shows that the failure to compile issue (#1 and #2 
above) is tied to processing @ARTICLE bib entries. The failure occurs in 
and out of footnotes and startquotation blocks. I really was too deep 
into a wrong view of the problem to see that before. That is pretty 
clearly a bug.


The issue with method=font and left, right, middle (#3, #4, #5 above) is 
still problematic. This is not tied to the bibliography system.

line is removed. With it removed, however, quote marks protrusion looks

I’m going to drop it until somebody complains, it is such an obscure
feature, not documented anywhere and no other engine supports such

with filenames containing parenthesis because XeTeX treats it as
filename quote char and this it gets stripped. Anyway, after some
searching it turned out this was added in 2004 for ConTeXt to workaround
some MetaPost quotation issue[1].

Now I'm not sure if this is still needed/used by ConTeXt and was
wondering if it can be dropped now?

Ideally, \DropCap would notice a piece of leading punctuation and drop it as 
well. Instead, it seems to look at the punctuation and give up.

I'm too lazy to look it up now, but most French books I read have double 
guillemets «» at the outer level and double quotes “” at the inner level. The 
definitions are in lang-ita.tex, and they do indeed define double guillemet for 
both quotation and quote:

   \c!rightquote=\rightguillemot,
   \c!leftquotation=\leftguillemot,
   \c!rightquotation=\rightguillemot]

This looks wrong to me, but it's something French users must discuss. As for 
the OP: you can set up any symbol you like, e.g.

\setuplanguage[fr]
[leftquote=\upperleftdoublesixquote,
 rightquote=\upperrightdoubleninequote,
 leftquotation=\leftguillemot,
 rightquotation=\rightguillemot]

which is explained in chapter 7.3 of the manual. Btw, don't use something like 
\cc in mkiv, prefer proper Unicode characters.

IINM, \cc and similar control sequences in MkIV will just insert the
proper Unicode character.

[NTG-context] \setupquotation affecting \quote

Hi,

I've been trying to use \setupquotation, but it seems it doesn't just affect
\quotation, but also \quote. In particular, setting style to tfb enlarges the
font used by \quote and somehow removes the quotes from around it.

Seeing that there is also a \setupquote, and from looking at the code, I think
this is not supposed to happen. This happens with MkII as well as MkIV, it
seems.

The following example shows the problem:

  \starttext
  \quote{Foo}
  \setupquotation[style=tfb]
  \quote{Bar}
  \stoptext

In my experiments with luatex, there's one thing that may be  
surprising for many users: we have come to expect that the characters  
` and ' in our input files map to single left and single right  
quotation marks. luatex just typesets them verbatim, so to speak.  
It converts the combination `` and '' to double quotation marks,  
however. So my question: wouldn't it make sense to convert the single  
marks as well? (And please don't tell me Oh but you should use \quote 
{} instead of ` '. I know that, but I guess that many users have  
hundreds of old documents where they use `'. Moreover, ' also creates  
the apostrophe character, which cannot be avoided.)

texligatures=yes

for the rest, we can consider mappings but i fear that we end up in a 
quote mess

is that the same as tlig=yes ? This doesn't effect the single quote.  
I see the problem with the quote mess; in the old pdfTeX, it wasn't  
even possible to get the ' character at all. But it is a minor  
anoyance in terms of backward compatibility, I think.

these quote thingies were actually font hacks, and depended on the 
fontencoding and such, which makes files non portable

The single straight quote in 'Typewriter Text' encoding is \char 13,
the directional one is in the ' slot (no, i do not know why)

Something rude like

   \catcode`'=\active \def'{\char13 }
   \tt a = 'string' ;

works in this example, but may not be usable in practise.

are wrong. Look at the output of

The singlequote character is converted into rightquote. This feature 
is also present in plain tex and Latex.

rightquote string rightquote does not look good in program listings. 
Isn't there some way to turn off these intelligent quotes in \tt?

The \quote and \quotation macros surround text with quotation marks. These are made language dependent.In dutch the old way was an opening mark at the baseline and closing at the top of the letters; ConTeXt has been programmed this way.However, the lower quotation mark is less and less used in Dutch (vide Jan Renkema, Schrijfwijzer, 2002, p.382) and the English variants are now commonly used.This leads to two questions:1. is there a setup-macro that can be used? We also use two variants of quotation marks. I thought that having a
single option to switch between the two variants would be handy (and
easy to implement), but I don't know how to call it. If I need the
other variant of quotation marks I use the definition above.

I doubt. There were too many texts written already and I guess that
people would get confused if the quotation marks would be changed at
once.

It is definately recent because it did not happen in 20060202.
There is a missing percent sign in the new core-mis.tex:

As afollow-up, I tried moving the font files some place else.

I first hat the font directory in

~/Library/texmf/

and then put them into

~/Library/texmf//texmf/

where they are apparently found, this time the log file says the font  
metrics can't be found.

Warnings like this used to mean that you had a mismatch where you
have a virtual font (name.vf) file, but that the matching metric
file (name.tfm) is not supposed to be a virtual font. This may be
the thing that is confusing pdftex? Too many (.vf) files instead of
missing files?

Have a look at the documentation: the font is not included, you need  
to download it first...  I f you want a font that works right away, try

I unzip texms.zip and get two directories, which I am supposed to put  
into the texmf tree. I tried it with
the directory (on my Mac)

/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/

and put all files form the downloaded texmf.zip into the  
corresponding subdirectories
(is there an easy way -- on a Mac, I had to authenticate each copy).
Then I ran sudo texhash and sudo updmap --enable Map tasgreek.map.

The first time I got

!!! ERROR! The map file `tasgreek.map' has not been found at all.

and subsequent times  Map files not recreated., which sounds  
suspicious.

Then, running a simple test file shows that the greek module is being  
loaded, I get n error message, but also
no greek text in the output :(

Any hints? I probably have messed up my texmf tree now...

That's due to a change in the TeX Directory Structure. Try running

sudo updmap-sys --enable Map tasgreek.map

and see if that solves your problem.

[NTG-context] straight single quote

While I appreciate TeX's support for attractive curly quotes, when
representing console text it is important to use straight single and
double quotes. I've been googling, exploring the list archives, reading
the source, and beating my head against a nice blue pillar over by the
window. None of these approaches has resulting in a straight single
quote.

What is the best way to get a straight single quote that matches the
straight double quote of the current font?

  \setupsectionblock [frontpart] [page=] % yes by default
the reason is that marks needs to be synchronized; if you add your own \page 
command, make sure that you do it at the right moment

page changes are always a bit tricky esp since one wants header etc to be nicely 
in sync as well; also,

\page some node \page
can introduce empty pages (tex related, not so much context)

I've got two problems with this setup:

no -, no line break, etc. Anyway: this line breaking is really ugly. I  
can fix this by hand, but I'd rather have this working automatically.

My second problem is that I get two empty numbered pages between  
chapters. As in
page 13: last text of chapter 1
page 14: empty page with page number
page 15: empty page with page number
page 16: page with quote and no page number
page 17: first page of chapter 2 no page number

I'd like to get rid of pages 14 and 15. I think I need to only do a  
page=left when I am on a right page at that time (page=even has the  
same result)

I even tried:

[page=disable,
 
before={\page[even]\ChQuoteFormat{\ChapterQuote}\noheaderandfooterlines%
