[NTG-context] switching to Context

Hello,

I'm thinking of making the switch from latex to context, indeed I'm
working on my first non-trivial document as a trial.  I have some
questions.

(1) Is it possible to do conditional compilation?  I wish to use
context to write lecture notes with embedded pictures.  I'd like to
compile the document into one form to hand out to the class (or make
available on the web) and another to be used as a presentation, much
like latex-beamer, with just the pictures.

(2) Is it possible to convert context into plain text (i.e. strip out
the formatting instructions)?  This may seem eccentric but it might,
with some programming, offer a means to put document content into a
relational database, perhaps in paragraph chunks.

Thank you both very much for your suggestions.  It appears that much
is possible beyond the simple inclusion/exclusion I had considered.

Just yesterday(!) I extracted from a pdf file the text to pass on to a
colleague.  Now why did I not think of that when I had the same need!

Hello,

I'm making progress in using modes - thanks again for the help so far
that was given in the switching to Context thread.

I have followed Thomas Schmitz' practex article and have set up modes
for presentation and manuscript.  I am using external figures on most
of the slides.  In presentation mode there is no need for figure
captions (the slide heading and my waffling will suffice).  In
manuscript mode I'd like to have captions to the figures.  I know I
can disable captions with {none} for each individual figure, but can I
do this _just_ for the presentation?  I have looked up \setupcaptions
but there does not seem to be a none option that could be used for
this purpose.

Thanks, but that did not work.  The only thing that seems to work is
to put {none} for the caption.  However, that means I'm not going to
have captions in the manuscript version either.

I think there is now a texlive ebuild that is marked testing.  Maybe
I should try that first.  I have a package built for teTeX so i can
revert if disaster strikes.

 where does that name come from ... ctx is reserved for context job 
 control files

The file name being compiled is main.ctx.tex.  I'm using the dual
extension .ctx.tex as a way of telling my editor (emacs) to invoke the
context mode of AUCTeX when I load a file with that extension.

I did it like that because I have (setq-default TeX-master nil) in my
.emacs so it asks then inserts the local variables that Peter
mentioned.  Having emacs recognise a context file by \starttext is

This is drifting off topic but, if you have any tweaks to make AUCTeX
work better with context than it does out of the box then I'd be glad
to hear about them.

tmp.ctx.tmp.  The latter was made by copying the former.  Both files

[NTG-context] defining a command

Hello,

I have this definition:

}

(It is modified from an example on the wiki that takes only the first
two arguments).

I use it like this:

\oneplot
% image
% caption
% reference
{\externalfigure[Fluorita_green]}
{Fluorite cleavage}
{cleavage}

but the reference is ignored and I get ?? in the compiled document.

Could someone point out my error please?

I'm interested in improved Context support in Auctex in general.  I am
a recent convert to Context, using it for my first project at the
moment.  I find much of the discussion on this list to be over my head
still.

I have a very little experence programming emacs lisp but have not
practised it for 3 or 4 years.  Currently I have implemented one or
two things I wanted in the form of (not very good!) emacs skeletons.
I'll help as much as I can, even if only with testing.

 otoh, I'm interested if there is newer version of  etexshow
 (Browser for ConTeXt commands) ?

Have you seen http://texshow.contextgarden.net/ ?  I don't know how up
to date it is.

[NTG-context] processing xml

Hello,

I have a document converted from rtf to xml that I'd like to attempt
to typeset using Context.

As a starting point I tried to follow the procedure in a document from
the wiki: mag-0008-1.pdf Dealing with XML.  Having copied the first
example document and stylesheet from that article and generated
sample-1.fx, I run:

texexec --pdf --use=fx --xml sample-1.fx

but it ends with:

I installed the minimal today from the wiki to be up to date before
posting.

Probably something has changed in the four years since mag-0008-1.pdf

I just downloaded the letter module and installed it by unzipping the
t-letter.zip file into /usr/local/context_minimal/.

When I try a test letter:

  It is raining again.

[NTG-context] Zoom image in presentation

Hello all,

I'd like to be able to zoom an image during a presentation.  My thinking
is that it might be possible by turning layers on and off interactively.
I see in this message:

that Hans said (enigmatically :-)) And then there are viewerlayers
(acrobat) that you can turn on and off with
\goto{On}[VideLayer{mylayer}] but that's a different topic.

[NTG-context] Draft version of document

Hello all,

Having used MkII to make a nicely formatted version of a document, I now 
need to make a draft version document in order to submit it to a 
journal.  They want the figure captions as a list at the end of the 
document and the figures collected on pages at the end too.  The draft 
version will need to be double spaced.  Obviously, I'd rather use the 
existing source to generate both draft and well-formatted versions, so 
it sounds like a job for modes.  Before I start hacking, has someone 
done this already or is ther an alternative method of accomplishing this?

That was an experiment by Simon and (in latex style) it overloaded

I use 3  modes for teaching:

manuscript -- notes that go on-line for students to download
presentation -- pictures for use in class
speakernotes -- miniatures of the pictures, each on a separate page,
 that I scrawl on for use in class (so I know what I'm
 supposed to say).

I got a lot of help from this list in putting these together.  Context
experts might find them laughable, but I'm attaching the modes in a
tarball just in case they are useful.  They are still evolving, by the
way -- I wrote speakernotes last week, inspired by something of the same
name on the wiki (sorry, I can't remember who the author is).

It is just a problem that comes up from time to time, rather than an
extensive collection of documents arriving on my desktop in one go.
Most people in my department use Word, and, although I have OpenOffice,
I don't use it other than as a means of opening and converting the Word
and Excel files that come my way.

The current document is short, simple and I dealt with it by converting to
text and doing the formatting from scratch.  However, others will
probably want to edit it and I'm sure it will arrive back on my desk in
Word again, so a less manual method of conversion would be convenient.

[NTG-context] Landscape printing

Hello,

I made a document that needs to be printed in landscape orientation on
letter paper.  I have this in the document:

\setuppapersize[letter,landscape][letter,landscape]

It looks fine in xpdf, but when I print the page has a very wide left
margin and the last column of my table is off the right edge of the
page.

I'm using this print command:

lpr -Plj5l -o landscape filename

I also tried printing from within xpdf, with the same command and the
same result.

[NTG-context] Letter with letterhead

Hello,

I must write a multi-page letter with only the first page as
(pre-printed) letterhead.  I adapted the Letterhead example from the
wiki to fit the style of my institution.  I would like to know how to
revert the second and subsequent pages to use a default layout.

If someone know how to use Wolfgang's letter module (in MKII) with
letterhead on the first page only, that would be fine.

Hello,

I cannot find how to set the width of a table column.  I am running
MkII.  The manual gives this: w set minimum column width at specified
value

I have currently: \starttable[|l|l|w5cm l|p|]

but that italicises the content of column 3.  I have tried variations to
no avail.

If I may presume on your patience a little more...

I now have:  \starttable[| l s1 | s1 l | s0 lp w(10cm) | s0 l |]

However, the entries in column 3 have line-feeds roughly every two words
and the 10 cm column width is not being used, so there's a huge gap to
column 4.

I'm using emacs-muse to write a document to be published to ConTeXt.
The document contains a little math.  According to this wiki page:
http://wiki.contextgarden.net/ConTeXt_and_emacs-muse#Math it is possible
to include math in muse using math and /math tags, which trigger
corresponding $ markup in the ConTeXt output.

The problem is that a muse expression like math\sum type = nMn/math
is published as

\switchtobodyfont[small]math\switchtobodyfont[big]\textbackslash{}sum
type = nMn\switchtobodyfont[small]/math\switchtobodyfont[big]

rather than the expected $\sum type = nMn$.

The muse manual for the version I'm using (3.12) makes no mention of the
math tags, so I'm wondering if it is an add-on written by (or
available to) someone on this list.

[NTG-context] Linux PPC64 minimals

ppc64 PPC970FX, altivec supported PowerMac7,3 GNU/Linux

but got:

Error: your system Linux ppc64 is not supported yet.
Please report to the ConTeXt mailing-list (ntg-context@ntg.nl)

The machine reports as ppc64 but it is running a 64 bit kernel with 32
bit userland.

I'd like to know how to proceed.  If necessary I am quite willing to

 first-setup.sh in an editor. line 28 has

 (they do work on my ppc64 box).

Dunno.  I _think_ I need the 32 bit binaries: everything else on
the machine was (or should have been) built as 32 bit even though the
kernel is 64 bit.

I doubt this has anything to do with 32 vs 64 bit binaries, however, as

Yes, commenting those lines removes the error messages here too, but of
course the desired --purge does not take place.

When you want to use context, you need to initialize the tree by typing:

  . /opt/context/tex/setuptex

in your shell or add
  "/opt/context/tex/texmf-freebsd-amd64/bin"
to PATH variable if you want to set it permanently.
This can usually be done in .bashrc, .bash_profile
(or whatever file is used to initialize your shell).

Something seems to be broken.  Can someone help?

Thanks for the suggestion.  Unfortunately it did not work:

luatools -generate

resolvers   | trees | analyzing 'home:texmf'

mtxrun  | unknown script 'base.lua' or 'mtx-base.lua'

But never mind, I can work round the issue that caused the need for the
old binaries.

sh ./first-setup.sh --context=2016.1.4 --all
. ~/Context/tex/setuptex
Setting "/home/rmason/Context/tex" as ConTeXt root.

cd to the directory containing my document, then

context document.tex

[NTG-context] Line numbers in output

Hello,

Is there a switch to enable lines to be numbered in the output pdf
document?  I have seen the garden entries on numbering for sections of
verbatim text but I would like the whole document to have line numbers.

My ConTEXt version is 2016.01.04 15:47.  Maybe it is time to update!

Skribilo uses an abstract syntax internally and the different output
engines process that into the target language.  In essence each engine
is the collection of rules appropriate to that target.

There are two input syntaxes, a simple one a bit like Emacs' outline
mode and the more Scheme-like syntax.  The former has limitations
documented on the Skribilo web-site, the latter is far more complete.  I
an guessing it is the Scheme-like syntax that you find weird.  I have
played around a a little this week on using Wisp
(http://www.draketo.de/proj/wisp/) and Readable
(http://readable.sourceforge.net/) to write Skribilo in a less
parenthesis rich style.  Although not able to complete the work owing to
time constraints, it looks acheivavble.

My goal would be to have an output ConTeXt (or Lout) document, with
fallback to LaTeX or XML if a publisher insists.  If this could be
combined with Emacs org-mode to document, store and run (or compile-run)
source code, then a very complete and versatile system for reproducible
reasearch could be constructed.

While not an editor, but rather a language, Skribilo
(http://www.nongnu.org/skribilo/) can output documents in various
formats, including Context and Lout.  I have worked a bit on getting
better Context output from it and last tinkered with the math output
about a year ago.  Such a system might form the output engine on which
an editor could be built.  The same might be said for Pandoc, in which
case perhaps one of the existing Haskell editors could be used as the
basis for a specialised text processing system.  For non-technical
documents SiSU (http://www.jus.uio.no/lm/toc.html) offers various output
formats, but again it is not an editor.

While your concept is interesting, I'm an Emacs user, and unlikely to
switch to anything else.

: Your luatex binary is too old, you need at least version 1.05!

Where do I get the updated luatex binary?

I'm running on FreeBSD 10.3, 32 bit.

[NTG-context] FreeBSD 13.2

Hello,

I've been away from ConTeXt for some time but now I want to install it
on my FreeBSD 13.2 system(s) (I have not switched any machines to 14.0
yet).  After unpacking, running the install scripts results in:

ld-elf.so.1: /home/rmason/Software/Context/bin/mtxrun: Undefined symbol
"__libc_start1@FBSD_1.7"

I assume this is because mtxrun is compiled for FreeBSD 14.0.  Thus, I
need (I think) to compile it for 13.2.  Are there instructions somewhere
on how to do this?

If I get a working installation I'm happy to contribute the FreeBSD 13.2
binaries back to the project, if someone will tell me how.

I see that the build does not provide the mtxrun binary that the
installer uses.  Does that mean I dont need mtxrun?

OK, I unpacked the main distribution in context/tex, set PATH and ran

mtxrun --generate
