[nysbirds-l] Photos of today's American Avocet JBWR East Pond

2013-08-14 Thread Andrew Baksh
I have posted some photos of the AMERICAN
AVOCET(
http://birdingdude.blogspot.com/2013/08/august-avocet-at-jamaica-bay-wildlife.html)
that was on the East Pond today at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens.
This is our 4th Avocet for the season that I am aware of that has been
observed and the 1st for August.

Hopefully, this one sticks around for others to see it since the last few
were all one or two day visitors. The other highlights were 2 *Red
Knots*loafing with the Black-belied Plovers and a few
*Stilt Sandpipers* which has suddenly become harder to find.

Shorebird numbers nosedived from yesterday with a lot of birds apparently
pulling out last night. I estimated around 600 shorebirds on the pond
today and this was during peak high tide.

Yesterday, I documented two young Peregrine Falcons running sorties on the
East Pond. To add insult to injury, one injured shorebird was picked off
near the North Island and eaten in full view of its buddies.

[nysbirds-l] Massive Coastal Swallow Flight

2013-08-14 Thread Shaibal Mitra
Swallows moved in large numbers along the beach under this morning's brisk
northwest winds and were still doing so when I left around noon. Lots of
shorebirds were migrating as well, but I saw no evidence that nocturnal
migrants moved last night.

Because there were relatively few species involved, I was able to make a
careful count of the swallows passing Robert Moses SP, Suffolk, LI, from
7:10-11:10. I also estimated those passing from 11:10 to 12:10, as I made a
cursory (and unproductive) inspection of several migrant traps around RMSP.

The totals were as follows:

Purple Martin 74
Tree Swallow 848, plus ca. 100 during the last hour
Bank Swallow 43, plus at least 2 during the last hour
Barn Swallow 5651, plus ca. 500 during the last hour
Cliff Swallow 20

I also tallied 16 Chimney Swifts, 17 Eastern Kingbirds, 14 Semipalmated
Plovers, 12 Lesser Yellowlegs, 2 Solitary Sandpipers, 121 Least Sandpipers, 3
Pectoral Sandpipers, and 1 White-rumped Sandpiper, among other species.

[nysbirds-l] NEOTROPIC CORMORANT - Hamlin Beach (Monroe County)

2013-08-14 Thread Andy Guthrie
This morning I photographed a NEOTROPIC CORMORANT flying west at Hamlin
Beach. It was with about 25 Double-crested Cormorants (DCCO) and I got
several photographs with DCCOs for comparison. The Neotropic immediately
looked smaller and longer-tailed, and these points are apparent in the
photos as well as the more limited, sharply-angled gular patch coming to a
point at the rear; smaller bill; dark lores; and hint of white feathering
at the rear of the facial skin.

Unedited photographs are posted here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/44406668@N06/

This would be a first state record pending NYSARC acceptance.

Thanks to Marshall Iliff, Willie D'Anna and Jim Pawlicki for comments on
the ID.

Cheers,
Andy Guthrie

[nysbirds-l] American White Pelican at Montezuma NWR

2013-08-14 Thread John J. Collins
There's an American White Pelican at the Knox-Marsellus Marsh right now at
Montezuma NWR. You need a scope to see it. It is standing on the mud on the
opposite shore preening itself.
