[nysbirds-l] Tiana Snowy Owl

2013-11-26 Thread robert adamo
Yesterday, a Snowy Owl (the 1st of 2, as of today) was seen by a local
birder, who made some phone calls to try to get other folks on the bird,
but thought it best for the owl, to not post it on the listserve. I was
able to get down to see it, and respected the finder's wishes and also
didn't report it. When it was posted earlier today, it was with the
finder's blessings, after having a change of heart !

I also had 3 T.V's. in the Roanoke section of Riverhead.

Cheers,
Bob

[nysbirds-l] South Shore Nassau: ducks, brant, yellowlegs, goldfinches, hermit thrush

2013-11-26 Thread Robert Taylor
Hi Everyone,

I spent the morning birding Massapequa Preserve and Lake, and around Jones

lots of Mallards and Hooded Mergansers. (around 9am) I stopped at the dock
at the end of Alhambra Road, saw lots of Brant in the bay and a single

much going on by the Coast Guard Station (besides Brant) Saw a single
female redwing blackbird, a mixed flock of goldfinches and juncos, as well
as a hawk patrolling (sorry couldn't ID) in the median west of the Coast
Guard Station. At Massapequa Preserve saw ~8 American Wigeons, 4 gadwall,
and mallards at the pond by New Hampshire Ave. Also saw an unidentified
duck - perhaps a female pintail? I have to compare my pics to a field
guide. Several Carolina Wrens, Cardinals, Song Sparrows, downy
woodpeckers, and a hermit thrush were present along the trail by this pond.

I'll post pics to my blog http://longislandbirding.blogspot.com/ tonight.
Would be great if someone can help me ID the mystery duck/ possible

[nysbirds-l] Honoring a man, who was also a birder, at his Funeral Service, and then in the field !

2013-11-26 Thread robert adamo
Today I attended Bill Reeves' Funeral Service at The Presbyterian Church
in Northport. Bill was a great guy, who had things in the right
order...family, friends, church, community and country. I feel blessed that
I got to know him fairly well, due to our shared passion for birds, and
service as members of NYSOA.

As I headed back to Riverhead, I thought of all the birding we did on our
trips up state to NYSOA board meetings, and also on the delegates field
trips at the annual meetings. One of the former that stands out is stopping
at Pelham Bay Park and finding a Long-eared Owl looking down at us - we
"flew" up to Vestal that day !

Today, with Bill as my co-pilot again, I made a stop at the Calverton
Grasslands, where 4 N. Harriers (1 a Gray Ghost) were hunting, a cock
Ring-necked Pheasant, and 7 Horned Larks were observed.

Before reaching home, an adult Coopers and an adult Red-tail were added to
the tally...with another memory being added to the many cherished already !

[nysbirds-l] Snowy Owl Edith Read Rye

2013-11-26 Thread Kyle Bardwell

A snowy owl was found at Edith Read at approximately 10:30 AM. I viewed the
bird with Tom Burke from the orange tape at the overlook over the beach on the
sound side. Take the path from the parking lot through the bamboo to the
overlook. The bird was on the rocky point.
Check in with the office to get updates on the bird and where to view it
without disturbing it.
I was hesitant to post this because of all of the drama with people disturbing
these beautiful owls. I am only posting it because of the Snowy Owl at Piermont
years back. I was a young guy when I saw that bird. It got me into birding. I
am posting this owl in hopes it could possibly create some birders like the
snowy owl that got me into birding at Piermont. Please do not disturb the bird.

[nysbirds-l] Orange-crowned Warbler, Prospect Park/Kings County

2013-11-26 Thread Sean Sime
This morning at roughly 11am I was treated to views of a bathing
Orange-crowned Warbler where the Lullwater opens up towards the Peninsula.
The bird preened for a few minutes at eye level and eventually worked it's
way high into the trees and across Wellhouse Drive onto the base of Lookout
Hill. The wildflower meadow on top of Lookout Hill would be worth checking.

The feeders at Breeze Hill have already drawn a crowd with many Goldfinch,
House Finch and a single group of 5 White-breasted Nuthatch.

Ring-billed Gull numbers were up over 300. Seems like they are aware of the
impending weather.

Cheers,

Sean
