[nysbirds-l] No sighting/ Images from 4/11 Brooklyn Pelagic

2015-04-15 Thread Sean Sime
I have put up a small selection of images from the Paulagics trip out of
Brooklyn this past weekend. For those of us who only see beady-eyed, dirty
looking Lesser Black-backed gulls from land all winter these adult birds in
breeding plumage were quite a welcome change!

[nysbirds-l] Eagle and some Warblers - Snowy Owl report

2015-04-15 Thread leormand .
According to a post on facebook the Snowy Owl is still present along Dune
Road.

The Bald Eagle nest I've been frequenting was business as usual
sub-adult on the nest, adult about 1/4 mile out on the marsh. After a
while the bird took off and circled high above the bay. An Osprey also
passed by with a flounder.

Robert Cushman Park (near the BNL boundary, Manorville) had a lot of very
active Pine Warblers.

I have uploaded two pictures of the Crested Caracara to my Flickr page. You can
see the differences between the right and the left (damaged) eye.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Caracara's left eye

2015-04-15 Thread Curt McDermott
He eye socket is indeed empty. Herb Houghton from NJ showed my a picture today
where the empty socket was evident. Herb also states that he took a photo of
the bird head on that shows the convex shape of the birds right eye and a
concave area where the left eye should be. He has a photo web site and can be
reached through it. Googling his name will get you there.

[nysbirds-l] Central Park Summer Tanager

2015-04-15 Thread Michael Britt
There is an "X" Summer Tanager report in eBird. Is Summer Tanager not
flagged for review in NYC? The date is quite early and I've seen no mention
of it otherwise. Perhaps a filter change is in store?

[nysbirds-l] Fish Crow - The predator

2015-04-15 Thread Michael Britt
So-called scavengers only occasionally get the press they deserve as
predators. I watched a Fish Crow raiding Rock Pigeon nests, under an
overpass along Saw Mill River Road in Yonkers late this morning. The crow
would move from nest site to nest site, with adult pigeons flushing in its
wake. Even common species have plenty to teach us birders...

Felipe, if you have a link for these photos outside of Facebook, perhaps you

There are many list serve subscribers who are not on Facebook and probably
don't know the reference to NY Birders.

[nysbirds-l] Montgomery [Orange Co.] Crested Caracara

2015-04-15 Thread Alan Wells
Hi all,

Yesterday, while viewing and photographing the Crested Caracara in
Montgomery, NY, I met a young man that had driven down from Ithaca to see
the bird (I took him to be a Cornell ornithology student). After examining
the bird through his scope, he mentioned that he thought the bird's left eye
was either missing or damaged. My photographs aren't clear enough to say
definitively, but do suggest that something is different about the left eye.
Anyone else notice this?

This was not posted to the NYS so I figured this would be the opportune moment
to cross post, for those subscribers who might be interested.

Harry Taylor, just reported that the Chuck-will's-widow continues at Bryant
Park in the NE corner--same area as yesterday. Look for the London Plane tree
with the patch of Daffodils near the trunk in that corner.

The bird was first reported this morning by BTW--Bobby & Colleen

He eye socket is indeed empty. Herb Houghton from NJ showed my a picture today
where the empty socket was evident. Herb also states that he took a photo of
the bird head on that shows the convex shape of the birds right eye and a
concave area where the left eye should be. He has a photo web site and can be
reached through it. Googling his name will get you there.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Caracara's left eye

2015-04-15 Thread Felipe Pimentel

I have uploaded two pictures of the Crested Caracara to my Flickr page. You can
see the differences between the right and the left (damaged) eye.

He eye socket is indeed empty. Herb Houghton from NJ showed my a picture

photo of the bird head on that shows the convex shape of the birds right eye
and a concave area where the left eye should be. He has a photo web site and
can be reached through it. Googling his name will get you there.

Interesting that it's the left eye. It could be a factor in explaining why
this bird is so far from home, although perception of magnetic polarity in
most avian species that have been researched is connected to the right eye
(and left brain hemisphere), I believe

[nysbirds-l] Fish Crow - The predator

2015-04-15 Thread Michael Britt
So-called scavengers only occasionally get the press they deserve as
predators. I watched a Fish Crow raiding Rock Pigeon nests, under an
overpass along Saw Mill River Road in Yonkers late this morning. The crow
would move from nest site to nest site, with adult pigeons flushing in its
wake. Even common species have plenty to teach us birders...
