[cayugabirds-l] Franklin's Gull "Flight" Wind Trajectory Analysis

2015-11-13 Thread David Nicosia
The birding world is a abuzz with the "epic" Franklin's Gull
flight we have seen in the northeast U.S. I ran some wind trajectories
backward in time using our global forecast system model.
I begin one trajectory in NJ and another in upstate NY and one can see
that the wind patterns from 1000 meters and up strongly favor western
species
pushing due east, such as Franklin's Gulls. These trajectories actually
originate
in their breeding range!!

I hope to see one tomorrow!!

Good birding to all!!

RE: [nysbirds-l] Cave Swallows

2015-11-13 Thread Isaac Grant
My guess is that we just miss them. So much area to cover and so few people
covering it. I think this is just a perfect example of how many good birds get
by us without being detected. That is not the case for Cape May. Very small
area and loads of coverage. All the birds bottleneck there before heading out
over the bay. Take the birds I found today as an example. I spent 6 and a
half hours on the beach from morning until early afternoon and did not see a
single swallow. Picked my kids from school, dropped them off at a friend and
went back out to see what I could find. Went back exactly where I was earlier
and there they were. May not have noticed them if one did not fly right past
me while I was walking out to the beach. Takes lots of luck to be right where
they are and looking in their direction when the happen to be flying by.

[nysbirds-l] More Gulls

2015-11-13 Thread Robert Berlingeri
While at the tail end of my travels today on the south shore of Nassau
County, I was at Tobay Beach (JFK Bird Sactuary) when I came across 4
Leeser Black-backed Gulls resting in the Parking lot. - Not sure if these
have any relation to the recent unprecidented influx of Franklin's Gulls in
our area, or if these are lingering birds which I had at this location on
Oct. 3. Perhaps these came from points to the north, migrating slowly under
mild conditions with prolonged SW winds? - One of the birds was a full
adult, 2 1st year birds, and one in between. Only 23 other Gulls were with
the LBBG's: 15 Herring, 5 GBBG, and 3 RB Gulls. The only Laughing Gulls I
had today were in the Field 6 Lot at Jones Beach, whereas hundreds, and
beyond have been in Hempstead Harbor in recent days, apparently feeding on
baitfish getting pushed up to the surface by larger fish - also probably
slow to migrate I would think. Interesting stuff all around..

[nysbirds-l] Cave Swallows

2015-11-13 Thread J GLUTH
Maybe I’m jumping the gun on this and good numbers of Cave Swallows will
be seen along the Atlantic coast of NY this weekend, but I find it
puzzling that so many have been seen down in Cape May recently and only
a handful here thus far.
Even taking into account Cape May’s history of hosting substantial
November incursions of Cave Swallows, and it’s penchant for
concentrating large numbers of southbound migrants in general, the
disparity between the numbers seen there over the past week (~400, Wed.
-- today) relative to the rest of the NE U.S. (16, 11 in only 6 eBird
reports plus Isaac Grant’s Staten Is. birds today) is striking. I don’t
think even the greater density of birders in Cape May would account for
such an imbalance. My understanding of past Cave Swallow invasions
(correct me if I’m wrong) had the birds being transported to the NE by
prolonged SW winds (like we’ve had recently) and first being seen in
numbers along the shores of the Great Lakes, then subsequently (1-2 days
later) along the Atlantic coast after the wind shifted NW. Any
hypotheses on how/why so many swallows have reached Cape May while
eluding detection by savvy birders elsewhere? Whatever the explanation,
I’ll be out early tomorrow looking for some — and Franklin’s Gulls too!

[nysbirds-l] Harris's Sparrow - No more visitors

2015-11-13 Thread Richard Guthrie
I'm not sure what happened, but the homeowner asked for their privacy back.

After the 10 o'clock group, I had to take care of some other business and
wasn't there.

All i know for now is that there was an exchange between an unknown birder
(unscheduled visitor) and this is the result.

Bottom Line - no more visitors.

If that changes, I'll post any updates.

Sorry.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End Police Station

2015-11-13 Thread McIntyre, Annie (PARKS)
Dear fellow birders,
Please respect the security of the grounds surrounding Park Police station in
the West End of Jones Beach. The area is clearly posted that it is closed to
the public. Unfortunately it's all too easy to understand why.

Good birding!

[nysbirds-l] Harris's Sparrow access - YES

2015-11-13 Thread Richard Guthrie
I spoke with the homeowner this morning and received permission to allow
limited access to his backyard by invitation.

So here's the deal.

The address is 12 Bacon Lane, Loudonville, NY. Bacon Lane is just north of
Osborne Road. On the corner there's a Genoa Imports deli/grocery (I'm told
they make a terrific sandwich).

If you're interested in going there today (Friday) let me know and we can
meet up this morning at 10 o'clock, and this afternoon at 2 o'clock and go
in as a group.

Tomorrow, Saturday, we can also meet up and go in again, So let's say 8
o'clock, 10 o'clock, and 2 o'clock.

Same for Sunday.

The goal here is to get as many people in as we can without disrupting
these good people's lives and outwear our welcome.

We can hope that the bird sticks around so that those who cannot make it
this weekend can try at some later date.

But by then, I would imagine that all that really want to will have
"gotten" the bird by then.

Incidentally, for the benefit of out of towners, the (somewhat) nearby
Red-headed Woodpecker is still being seen daily, and the (less somewhat)
nearby Townsend's Solitaire has been seen recently as well.

-> So if interested, please e-mail me with a day and time that you
think you can be there, and we can make arrangements. Again targeting 10
this morning, 2 this afternoon; 10 Saturday, 2 Saturday afternoon; and the
same for Sunday. After that it will have to be more tailored arrangements.

Please bear with us. This whole effort is to maintain some level of decorum
so we don't cause stress, inconvenience or annoyance to the good homeowners.

And there's no guarantee just how this somewhat skittish bird will react to
a bunch of binoculars aimed in his direction. We;ll just have to see.

Thanks

There is a first-cycle Franklin's Gull (FRGU) in the boat ramp parking lot
at Floyd Bennett Field with ~50 gulls (30 Laughing) right now.

For some balance, I came up empty for FRGU on the Queens barrier, checking
the visible beach from Silver Gull Club, Riis Park parking lot and
beach, and the gull flocks near the wastewater plant and school close to
Beach 108th St.

Good birding

[nysbirds-l] Harris's Sparrow - No more visitors

2015-11-13 Thread Richard Guthrie
I'm not sure what happened, but the homeowner asked for their privacy back.

After the 10 o'clock group, I had to take care of some other business and
wasn't there.

All i know for now is that there was an exchange between an unknown birder
(unscheduled visitor) and this is the result.

Bottom Line - no more visitors.

If that changes, I'll post any updates.

Sorry.

After finding the long-billed dowitchers at Santapogue creek Sy Schiff and
I were lucky to see 4 different Franklin's gulls today. One at Venetian

[cayugabirds-l] Franklin's Gull "Flight" Wind Trajectory Analysis

2015-11-13 Thread David Nicosia
The birding world is a abuzz with the "epic" Franklin's Gull
flight we have seen in the northeast U.S. I ran some wind trajectories
backward in time using our global forecast system model.
I begin one trajectory in NJ and another in upstate NY and one can see
that the wind patterns from 1000 meters and up strongly favor western
species
pushing due east, such as Franklin's Gulls. These trajectories actually
originate
in their breeding range!!

Thanks

Rich Guthrie
