RE: [nysbirds-l] Gray Kingbird-Conesus Inlet-Sliker Hill Rd Livingston County

2016-05-03 Thread Wasilco, Mike R (DEC)
The gray kingbird was still present as of 1220pm today. It was in the cattails
and trees at the east end of the dike of the main impoundment, best viewed from
about 100m west of the spillway area. It was often perching in cattails
between foraging flights low over the water, but also occasionally perched on
various snags.

Hi all,

Ethan Gyllenhaal and I are viewing a Gray Kingbird from the dike at the Sliker
Hill Rd access spot at Conesus Inlet WMA. It is actively flycatching straight
out from the dike-viewed from the end of the concrete walk.

Good luck and will post more details later.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Gray Kingbird-Conesus Inlet-Sliker Hill Rd

2016-05-03 Thread Greg Lawrence
Andy Guthrie and others reported the bird from the same location this morning.
From the text alert:
"GRKI last seen back in reed bed straight out from path from parking area to
dike. Staying low in reeds and often not visible."

Also has been seen from the E end of the dike. Suggestion would be to spread
out along the dike and scan the snags and dead cattails. It may take a bit of
searching but it is still around.

Good luck to those who go!

RE: [nysbirds-l] more Caspian terns

2016-05-03 Thread Curt McDermott
Having heard of the Tern sightings at Kingston Point, I stopped in on my way
south last night. I arrived at approx. 6:15PM and was able to immediately see
11 of the reported 13 Caspian Terns. Additionally, I had 10 Common Terns, of
which 8 were mid river flying northward in a loose group and 2 Bonapartes
Gulls. It was a nice end to the day. I believe that the Caspians and possibly
1 or 2 Commons spent the night.

There was a great showing of Caspian Terns along the Hudson River upstate.
There were 13 at Kingston Point (Ulster County), 1 at New Baltimore (Greene
Co.); 2 at Coeymans Landing (Albany County); 1 at Cohoes Flats (Albany/Saratoga
Co.) and 1 at Collins Lake (Saratoga County).
Also, two Black Terns were at Coeymans Landing, and 1 at Crescent ( Mohawk
River - Albany Co.).
And keeping with the tern theme: 12 Common Terns at Cohoes Flats as well.
Let's see if this lingers into tomorrow or if these migrants move on (with an
interesting ternover to follow).

Re: [nysbirds-l] Kings County Cerulean, Yellow-throated Warbler + Radar/Wind discussion

2016-05-03 Thread Peter Reisfeld
I have also noticed that there have been a number of days this season in which
there was good migration reported on the ground, but relatively low densities
seen on radar. While the variation of wind direction at different altitudes
may offer a path for birds to migrate on nights that the predominant winds are
not favorable, It still doesn’t explain why more birds are not showing up on
radar. Are they migrating so low that they fly “under the radar”? Do they
have some sort of natural “stealth” mechanism to avoid showing up as
reflectance? Or are the numbers still relatively modest but local weather
circumstances are just concentrating them in certain of our parks?

It will be interesting to see what we see on the ground when the densities
pick up a bit.
